chronique est gary brown no in thii corner has not gone bilingual but the first sentence seemed like an appropriate way to introduce a stranger to our midst his name is gary brown in either language and his profes sion is hockey if he ever gets around to do it gary is an import to bolster the stiength of the markham junior b entry this year but up to now things havent been looking too good he has all the ambition and spirit thats required for hockey now all he needs is a bit of luck gary came from latuque quebec and after three practises with the toronto marlboros broke his wrist its a common hazard among hockey players to break bones and garv took his pitfall with the thought that it would heal eventually meanwhile the marties sent him to markham and while his wrist healed gary watched his team mates go through their pacei in practises exhibitions and games finally the doctor ordered that the cast be removed and with a few weeks of exercise the wrist would again be in top shape last friday gary was all smiles as the cast came off the same day he was stricken again this time with tonsillitis it was only a sore throai until sunday when again the doctor stepped into the picture with the bad news gary was still smiling m had to miss three days of school which to anyone would be a break in the routinebut he still hasnt seen any action with his hockey club being a stranger in markham the goodlooking fairhaired yoith said that the hospitality and friendlyness is tops although he admitted he was shy he has wasted no time in making many friends at markham district high school where he is presently a grade 12 student he explained that on the first day a couple of the students showed him around the school introduced him to the teachers and made him known to his class he said that he likes markham but in the same breath explains that its too quiet gary is staying with mr and mrs harry james on elizabeth street he was a little worried about his accommodation at first but after meeting the james he is more than satisfied with the arrangement at 17 years old this is garys first time awav from home for any lengthy period he was born and raised in latuque a small city of about 13000 people because there are no nearby communities gary said that all the sports competitions are played within the con fines of the city limits he has two younger sisters and his father is the chief of police in latuque he attended champagne high school before coming to ontario gary was discovered by jack toupen who is the quebec scout for toronto he was playing midget hockey at the time a rightwinger gary said he was always two years ahead of his class when he was peewee age he played bantam and when he was midget age he played juvenile standing 511 and weighing 160 pounds garv hopes to see action very shortly depending on what coach frank boneilo says gary could play tomorrow night when markham mceti dixie in school where everyone speaks english gary finds the go ing a littlerough he is used to speaking french most of the time but to listen to him talk its hard to tell which is his second lan guage english or french one other fellow on the markham club larry gibbons speaks french and between them they confuse the whole team at school gary finds chemistry relatively easy some guys have it and some dont but he just cant come to terms with that wild english cat shakespeare all his expenses including schooling housing and even spend ing money are consumed by the toronto marlboros the marliet will also finance garys trip home for christmas we cant tell you what kind of a hockey player gary really is because weve never seen him play butwhen so manv people go to so much trouble over one prospect hes bound to be good gary wants to play hockey and play is as soon as possible each day he works out on a rubber ball to strengthen his wrist and is now using a hand grip as further therapy looking into the future gary would like to become a pro fessional hockey player but he states not unless he has a good sound education if i was ever in an accident that prevented me from playinf hockey i would want a good education to back me up he said with a philosophy like that how can he miss 9 oclock high single betty armstrong 258 high triple betty arm strong 567 over 200 joyce wright 204 lorraine barber 200 claremont comm bowling lg ladies high their regular season has not started well it starts this tuesday with gala opening ceremonies bands and dignitaries and even last years champs will be in attendance at the arena a number of last years stars will return to the una up with an even amount of rookies the veterans include goalie chuck doyle ken aida jim hood pete reesor ross brown craig dunnett and tom benson newcomers to the stouffville clippers are william brown rr 4 stouffville george shepherd thornhill craig hilborn west rouge frances haylow stouffville glenn hart west rouge peter everett rr pickering and evan downing west rouge the clippers are in the same c and d combined league with practically the same teams minus uxbridge and plus the controversial haliburton other teams include bobcaygeon who will be the visiting team on opening night here sutton-canning- ton woodville little britain lindsay aurora and possibly new market the newmarket club was not represented at a meeting held here on sunday but it is speculated that thev will ice a team if however they dont then aurora and stouffville can and probab ly will choose players from their club something new that will be added this season is an allstar game to be played on january 8th it will pit the defending champion bobcaygeon against the best players of the other teams the only drawback to stouffville residents is the fact that the game will be played in bobcaygeon nevertheless the thing to remember right now is that opening date of the regular season here its november 2 1965 at 830 pm the arena can hold a lot more people than it did last year on monday night the stouffville arena was invaded by kids minor hockey leagues officially started and although there were no games played some of ihe youngsters underwent some drastic loosening up for many it was their first time on skate this season and regaining those legs took a bit of practise how ever by the end of the practises ihe boys seemed ready willing and able to plunge headlong into the regular season a few last minute registrations were handled by last years pros wilfred morley and many of the boys sized up their new coaches as well as vice versa all the squirts did was skate no sticks no pucks just skate from the skating we chose one lad that will be worth watching as the season develops hes young don rennie son of mr and mrs jim rennie and on the ice this kid is like a bullet theres no doubt about it he can skate and quite well for a boy his age but whether he can keep up his deadly pace with a hockey stick in his hand remains to be seen don is playing in the squirt league although from his size he could practically sneak into a bantam practise and not be noticed throughout the season we will be selecting other young lads who stand out among their clubs and each will receive honourable mention in this corner games in the minor league should get under way this monday night begining at 630 pm speaking of hockey players who deserve honourable mention i firmly bclive this is the only place where they can get it they are a group of boys who either too old or too tired cannot make the organized leagues all have the desire to play hockey and a tip of the wallace derby to telf rennie for finding a free hour monday night for them to play they dont go under any name they dont have regular uni forms and they dont charge admission but they do have fun unfortunately if you dont play for this group youre too late there is no room for additional recruits however you can still come down to the arena monday night and watch these excep tional hockey players work out keep a sharp eye peeled for such super stars as bill hit cm harmon dave puck shy slack bill bruiser mcnelly bob the glove wagg and many many more and dont miss mike frank udvarl cadieux at the end of the referees whistle mr law and order himself what better way of keeping stouffville youngsters out of hot water titan to put them on ice
