only part of the muted cry in the auditorium of birch- mount park collegiate on oct 2 for there cheerleaders from all over ontario gathered to gether under one roof to create the greatest noise the walls of dear old birchmount has prob ably ever heard six of stouffvllles eight cheerleaders got ud bright and earlv saturday morning and gailv marched to the high school where miss ruutberg piled all of us into her car giggly and excited during the entire ride our spirits soared to their peaks when we finally arrived at the school left to fight for ourselves throughout the morning we first got our bearings in the school and then introduced ourselves around kids had even come from as far as ottawa to enter in the fun at tpn oclock we filed into the auditorium and sat amidst over a thousand peppy and en thusiastic teenage girls all waiting expectantly for the ral ly to really begin after making friends with the cheerleaders from preston who were seated gether and began what turned out to be a marathon of cheers which continued until finally the invincible dr newt loken gymnastic and cheerleading roach of the university of mi chigan appeared on the stage vibrant and full of life dr loken started it off with a suc cession of short catchy sideline cheers the roomful of girls re ally got going as individual squads in turn each gave a demonstration of their favourite cheer and then out to the field ah the cheers seen per formed inside were tried by the girls and varied gleeful shouts of ive got it hey look ive got it filled the air lunchtime rolled around and ecstatic girls broke out from the group all eager to eat yet not wanting to waste any time away from their cheering fortunately for us stouffvil- iites miss ruutberg had prepar ed a wonderful lunch and she is truly a walking example of one who practices what she preaches we returned in the afternoon still bubbling and full of antici pation during the next thirty minutes skits stunts and pan tomimes suitable lor pep rallies were discussed and demonstrat ed then we hit the field again this time the hundred schools were divided into groups of ten cheerleading squads and the competition began from each ten two finalists were chosen unfortunately stouffville was not one of them but we were given the opportunity to view all the others and many good ideas and unusual techniques were gained we left the rally later that afternoon tired but thoroughly satisfied and contented we had learned a lot about cheerleading and a lot about human nature too that when young exuber ant teenagers get together to share and exchange ideas its bound to turn out a real success markham juniors edged 32 by whitby team if exhibition carot are any indication markham hockey fans are in for a fat russed season the junior b club drop ped a 32 decision to the whit by dunlops sunday nisht but they went down fighting markham won their first exhi bition same in whitby last week 75 sundays content was the lype of hockey an enthusiastic fan wants to see both teams show ed fire determination and skill and played a sixty minute seesaw battle sealawax showed their spirit in the opening minutes of the same by hitting the score board at the 415 mark it was well after the six minute mark before the dunnies had a cood chance to test goalie ron mar io w chris evans who displayed a threatening offensive all nisht scored the first markham coal when he whippcdtrta shot from dan makey and roy he witt that trio also combined for markhams second goal and again evans was the marks man marlow who only played the first period between the pipes for markham wss brilliant in shutting out whitby at least three shots were labelled as sure goals that to the dunnies frustration were turned aside i by spectacular saves doug kirton took over the j position in the remaining two periods and although three shots evaded him he came up with some key saves whitby tied the score early in the middle frame on a goal by cheeseman menard put the visitors two up only two min utes later their third and final goal of the night came also in the second period when oshea found the mark with a sizzler that budged the left corner of the twine the neatest tally of the night came at the 707 mark of the final period when evans perfectly positioned in front of the net took a pass from the corner and slammed the puck into the right side of the cage whitby goalie moore had no chance on the play fifteen penalties including two majors for fighting were assessed during the contest markham received ight of them one injury resulted to shakespeare and this film didnt improve matters my attitude toward caesar and shakespeare was worsened last year by the tedious dissection of the play during english classes recently though my view point has drastically changed i discovered how i can really en joy julius caesar thp change came about during a live per formance of caesar at the stratford shakespearean thea tre the drums beat trumpets blared lights dimmed the crowd hushed and the per formance began immediately the audience watched with cap tivated interest as the actors in true roman costume walked on stage soon i was caught up in the excitement and mood that i felt as if i could reach out and grasp the time and situation i was actually taking part in the events which were really hap pening about me the scenes progressed rapidly and even though there was a lack of elaborate scenery inter est was held throughout imagi nation was stimulated hpcaupp the audience was required to picture the actual settings of each scene as few actors and actresses as passible wore used but this put more emphasis on the main i characters and our interest was wholly centred on them instead of on other players or scenery the acoustics were excellent and the actors voices carried clearly to every corner of the theatre in comparison to live theatre the film could be considered a nothing to begin with it was only in black and white where as the stage performance was in living colour the voices from the movie were not distinct and the fre quent breakings of the tape did not help matters the reels had to be changed three or four imps and as a result the stu dents became lidgety and lost interest the scenes were constantly crowded with characters this crowding and true scenery de tracted from the actors per formances which werent very dynamic npw as i compare he film of julius caesar to the live stage presentation i must say that even though the film had good settings and more people live theatre must he considered the ultimate in production n jt l oldtimers although the date is still well advanced the stouffville minor hockey association has arrang ed to have the nhl old- timers here for a game on commend hows ever there is nothing wrong 1 suppose with relating first im pressions the game to which i refer was played sunday night at the community centre in front of some 325 spectators and it resulted in markham losing to the whitby dunlops 32 without knowing the background or actually witnessing the game one would say the score indicated a cloe hard fought battle that would be cor rect most of the 325 spectators left the arena quite satisfied that win lose or draw their team displayed an excellent brand of hockey oven though it was only an exhibition content but the players themselves had no choice it was simply s matter of dig dig dig or get left off the team twenty names filled the lineup and by the time the regular season begins it will have dwindled considerably i dont know how many wilt be can ned but its for sure a few players will get the axe markham made mistakes throughout the game but then what club doesnt there were delays in clearing the puck improper passing bad checks and poor shooting none of these errors how ever resulted in goals penalties may be a problem for the markham team silly two minute minors that change a good offensive club into a wary defensive one granted the team has its share of penally killers and they did an impressive job hut a club cannot score a goal if they know they have to play defensive hockey a player can hit an opponent pretty hard and not be called as illegal but it3 thesp sneakv plbnws and sly sticks that bring roforeee action there is nothing more frustrating to a coach who in the dyin minutes of the game sees his team behind one goal and has a penalty called against one of his players this years club is young really young half the team is made up of boys 16 and 17 years old for this season and because of their youth markham may have a bit of difficulty in attaining a high position in the standings however it is tremendous to think of the future when these lads mature in experience and get to know how to play as one solid team most of th members arp good for at loast two more years in junior b some will go for thi ce and oven a few have four years of hockey remaining after this one coach frank bonello is laying a foundation for what inevitably will become a topnotch team the hoys will find at least those that dont already know that junior tv is a stiff league or any sixteen year old to handle its a good start to what might some day become a professional career in any one of the nhl teams but it requires a lot of work hard skating hours of practise drilling of basic fundamentals and in general determination we could see this taking place sunday night the only real complaint that i have with respect of course is to tiie name of the team im not trying to take anything away from the sponsor international wax but sealawax does not strike me as being an appropriate name for a hockey club first of all i think the name should be plural such as the leafs hawks or canadians secondly it should be short and to the point perhaps even indicate some fire for example trappers or wolves or acesetc i dont have any suggestions as to what name would prove satis factory as a matter of fact im probably the only person in the world who doesnt like it well the new york americans became the new york yankees to keep the sports writers happy i wonder what will happen here many of the hockey players that will represent markham this year are imports some from a good distance away the coach although he is familiar with the area is new to the iob through the cooperation of the hockey executive 1 was abl8 lo obtain a brief rundown of the players trying out or positions this year some are not as complete as others but as the season matures i will elaborate on the players frank
