the stoutcvilie tribune tfcvfef ortobc 7 1965 the wine and white initiationtwo views sdhs student council by robbie houston what was initiation to me in 83 it was embarrassing fun in 64 it was a blast before i explain my feelings of initiation first allow me to introduce myself for i am a rare and unfortunate person a poor soul in grade nine for the second time i will now explain the view of initiation of the grade nine student and those of other high school students we are not allowed to talk to to the grade nine student initiation means horror agony and perhaps death to put it in a few polite words a niner wonders what hideous ordeal he must perform for a sinister grade eleven or twelve he also wonders what garments which always show him off in the wrong way he must wear during friday night other thoughts are rotten tomato juice from a genuine rotten tomato running down his back and the backbreaking job of carry ing others school books when you have been initiated theres nothing like coming back to school on a friday night and seeing the new shmoes get it sometimes you feel orry for some kids but sometimes you are elad a certain guy got it however when it comes to the point you are so happy to see the niners getting smeared on the stage or down town singing along with the sewers this year at stouffville hish school the government has been changed in two ways this er a thr dollar activity feo has ben paid by m student this card pnabies students to be allowed imo dances games and other school activities for a con siderably lower price students may not join any clubs or sports envolved with the school without a students activity card but because about ne hundred members of the stu dent body have not bought an activity card there may have to be a fund raising project later on in the year the other change is that now the student council is sponsor ing all the clubs of the school the baa gaa science club ski club iscf and the united nations club each club presents the student council with a budget of all the costs thev will have cor the whole year the student council then j approves or disapproves rhese j budgets these are the only major changes in the student council programme this year anyone wishing further information on these or other matters dealinz with the student council should speak to anyone of the members of the student council micheal reed president randy mole vice president gail groe secretary- tt ea surer iinda clendennine secretary jaiiie mehaftey social convener janice smith press reporter alan lee editor or your student council class representative students participate in centennial high school news jtreeplaniirig r dieter schnell ii b the public should be reassur ed that thoe grotesaue carica tures of human beings walking the streets of stouffville friday night were in reality high school students and more speci fically niners this is the night that sdhs creates its own particular caste systems although it involves only wo groups niners and the rest of the school we uod to refer to this special day as black friday but this gives a vague hint of impending doom which wouldnt go well with those students who have weak hearts because of the recent banning of guillotines bottomless pits and other useful devices for per sonal discomfiture the initia tion committee was somewhat limited in this respect as a re sult the initiations carried out were comparatively light mem bers of the committee clad in frocks resembling those of the ku klux klan accompanied groups of niners downtown where they did everything from 6inging xmas carols reminding everyone that there are only 85 shopping days left until xmas to having a friendly chat with the town policeman while some one measured the length of the axle of his car usually the niners have heard enough about initiation before the ominous day to rea lize that they are the selected ones the rest of the school is talking about you would ex pect them then to be apme- henive downcast and horrified however this was not the case this year they tried to outdo each other in a frantic rush to can v our books some evrn beg ged to carry them they com peted with each other to see who could walk around the school the greatest numher of times carrying books stacked eight feet high no one has yet broken 120 times and ths may stand as an alltime record for many years to come in short the grade nines were very enthusiastic about be- ing ridiculed and put to work which shows that they are all getting to be very good sports or else they are exceptionally stupid the initiation committee should be commended for one of the best initiations for a long time except for those stu dents who graciously declined in come nearly all of thp grade nines thoroughly enjoyed them selves cheerleaders chosen after two weeks of practising cheers splits and cartwheels the following girls were chosen as cheerleaders suzanne clu- bine lee corbett linda
