cold spell it seems only fitting that hockey should be the lead topic maybe im rushing the season a bit but whether you like it or not the snow will ba flying in two months markhams community centre will open its doors to the first leaguescheduled junior b hockey game on october 22nd glenn kennedy whose interest in hockey is unlimited is selling seasons tickets now with a side offer of winning a new set of golf clubs last year he reports the mark ham sealawax club drew a tremendous response from the public even though the club fell short of the playoffs the mark ham club is scheduled in a league with seven other metro teams it is stiff competition and because of it most of the markham team is made up of imports this year they will receive player assistance from the toronto marlies and as things stand now from the gatsonfalconbridge native sons from the coaching end of it things look pretty good for the home club frank bonello a former player for the whitby dunnics will handle the chores behind the bench anyone interesied in catching a glimpse of the markham team in action should be at the markham community centre on october sth for an exhibition game against whitby baseball much controversy has arisen from a recent column regarding the funeral of baseball in stouffville although not apologizing for anything i wrote i would like to take an opportunity to do some muchneeded clarifying with that chunk of literary i tried to express my feelings about the disorganization of the baseball situation here this summer and like it or not my feelings are still unchanged only trouble was however that 1 misled a num ber of baseball leaders in stouffville into believing i was talking about them this i assure you was not my intention don ilaynes whose sheer perserveieme has kept him from throwing in the towel brought it to my attention that the article was somewhat suggestive indicating that the baseball boys in town were lazy and irresponsible don was instrumental in trying to start the intermediate ball club again and in my opinion did everything that was earthly possible to keep it going however the trouble and there was plenty wrong with the organization was not here but was in the league operators the leaders the conveners the big wigs call them what you like don has received nothing from the ontario baseball associa tion in way of support advice or assistance don and his club met every obligation they were confronted with and more often than not found themselves standing in some strange park with not even as much as a girl guide team to play against and its not just don thats doing all the work as a matter of fact one man couldnt handle the responsibilities of a baseball team guys like bert jagger and roger todd hase done every thing possible in an effort to get the ball rolling here don is filling every last obligation then will gracefully bow out of the oba next season he and othe other ball promoters will endeavour to place an intermediate team in a northern eight- team loop where incidently little britain went when they drop ped out of the oba midway through the season one of the most important members of any ball club al though you wont find him on the field is the sponsor and in this case glen ratcliff deserves a hearty pat on the back for his efforts in building a baseball club here glen sank x number of dollars into the purchase of equipment and uniforms and this badly organized season has affected him too i expect to see a vast improvement next season if the inter mediates can land a slot in this northern league and i think were going to get it meanwhile don haynes and his lads have learned from ex perience that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link and when that link is the head of the organization theres not much hope for success track and field no matter where he goes in the world bill crothers always seems to come up with a win recently at the world student games held in budapest hungary bill once again captured tha 800 metres race against worldwide competition the likeable pharmacist from markham seems to have a monopoly on that race and only someone with a lot ol speed and determination will take it away from him closer to home sue nigh is making the city headlines with her efforts in the ladies high jump reaching heights of 54 and 55 sue has won more awards and medals than anyone we know of sue cleared up one point that has been bothering a number of people for a while in a picture in the telegram and the tribune it showed her clearing the bar with one shoe on and one shoe off people wondered whether it fell off or was taken off on purpose well brace yourselves sue takes it off before jumping as she seems to get better height by it i wonder what would hap pen if she took both of them off swimming the pool is closed for another year the diving boards were taken down and the doors bolted or the labour day weekend terminating one of the best seasons stouffville pool has had the heaters placed in the first of the year kept the water warm when polar bears wouldnt dream of swimming that only goes to prove the old saying that you have to spend money to make money of course there were other expenses that cropped up during the summer months both diving boards were replaced with new ones and vandals had their childish fun cutting up canvas and breaking life preservers of course you have to expect the latter from people when you try lo give them a place to go to kill the boredom i dont know why these kiddies fent stay at home nights and cut out paper dolls thats about where their intelli gence quotient stands football now that school if youll pardon the expression is back in full swing stouffilles football team will begin practising for another season although i was only around for the tailend games last year i was much impressed with stouffvilles club this year coach jim rehill tells me the team should be even stronger mr rehill said that the school has purchased additional practise equipment with which to train the team last year they made the playoffs and were beaten out in the very end this year they could carry through to total victory suggest increase continued from front the council had held seven special meetings and work on i the building has just started i a ratepayer in the audience said that in his opinion the kencral public was not aware of these many additional duties that council members porform- ed reeve win timbers seemed j to frown on any pay raise for tne current year but said that i the council could introduce a recommendation that would rcopen the issue for discussion tin 1966 i savings by the shovelful place your order for our topgrade top heat ing coal now the supply is up and the prices
