relatives to claremont park tomlinson family reunion held at claremont there was a great reunion of j relatives in the claremont community park on saturday afternoon when family descend ants of the late fred tomlinson held their first openair gather ing the names of 102 persons were recorded many travelled loud distances to attend including mr and mrs wm schmidt and mr and mrs wilfred bauer of horne- payne out and mr and mrs ronald tomlinson and family of chicago 111 bolh mrs schmidt luella and mrs bau er hazel are sisters of dr n f tomlinson of claremont mr ronald tomlinson is a nephew a third sister mrs doris hunt resides in agincourt a brother gordon lives in richmond hill and another ted is in van- honour audley teacher of 25 years couver ted could not fv pres ent but a telegram was read in his absence dr tomlinsons three sons and one daughter were all in at tendance including mr and mrs allan tomlinson and fam ily of hamilton dr and mrs wm tomlinson and family of pickering together and competed in canoe races fire lighting knot tying and canoe tilting the big event on saturday was the sevenmile sail boat race governed by olympic rules the greenwood team of allan cen- annua ontario county junior farmer field day was held on saturday june 26th in brooklin park despite favourable haying conditions throughout the coun ty attendance was good and competition was strong in the girls division belly medd of the port perry club was high individual for the day larry davidson and john stone both of the port perry club tied for top position in the boys division perhaps one of the more out standing performances of the day in view of the extreme heat was that morlcy davidson also of the port perry club finished first in the mile bill barlow led the port perry team to still another victory in the tugowar contest the boys softball shield was won by the brooklin club while the corresponding girls award went to the benvcrton club the square dance competi tion held at utica on may 29th was won by the beaverlnn club with ted gordon as champion caller the field day committee of miss anne drydcn brooklin and mr hob barlow blackwater deserve a great deal of credit for bouquet ot red roses mary jane feasby the brides sister was maid of honour and the bridesmaids were kathleen feasby sister of the bride and anne ormiston sister of the groom they were attired in blue members travel to guelph on wednesday tune 30 three bus loads of ontario county 4h club members travelled to guelph to join a similar group from south simcoe for a tour of the university upon arriving the group was greeted by dean n r richards of the oac in his introductory remarks dean richards emphasized the need for advanced studies in the field of agriculture and out lined the steps by which inter ested 4h members may ob tain such an education in view of goverment loans and grants to university students dean richards continued to express his belief that in most cases the only barrier preventing young people from obtaining such a goal was indeed them selves later in the morning dr goble of the biology depart ment discussed the use of pest icides followed by a lecture on blackbird control by dr dyer throughout the afternoon the 4h members were taken on tours of the animal hus bandry department the crop science department and the ontario veterinary college professor raithby head of the animal husbandry depart ment outlined the programmes existing within his department and associated area next fol lowed a discussion and demon stration presented by dr in gram of the meats laboratory on carcass quality and grades the 4h members were also shown through the breeders service building now under the animal husbandry depart ment and engaged in the pro cessing and freezing of bull semen the crop science department provided for an inspection of the various experimental plots including such crops as barley corn birdsfoot trefoil and al falfa professor winch of the crop science department out lined a direct seeding program for alfalfa mixture which would yield two crops in its seedling year at the ontario veterinary college the visiting groups viewed the various laboratories operating rooms and clinical stables here the 4h mem bers became aware of the lat est techniques associated with the treatment of diseased live stock on the whole it was a most worthwhile experience for the 4h members providing them with an insight of the many challenges awaiting them in the field of agriculture accompanying the 4h mem bers on the trip were mrs albert hockley mr plowmens associat ion met in the town ship hall sunderland on wed nesday june 30 for the purpose of making plans for the annual north ontario plowing match mr leslie smith president was in charge of lotton and his wife mary ann sailed from yorkshire england to canada the trip taking seven weeks three of the thirteen children ranging in age from 2 to 8 years came with them the remainder were born in ontario they first settled in markham twp on the 5th con and 17th avenue but later moved to cedar grove and occupied the home now owned by the gaston family from there they moved to the l c scott farm and then on to pickering twp on the rosebank road and 1st con cession on juno 2fith about 85 des cendants gathered at woodland park cedar grove for a family reunion only two of the second generation remain mr ben lotton and mrs gordon muri- son other senior members pre sent were mrs vera barrington mrs marshall lotton and mrs edna rhodes everyone in attendance from the age of 6 months bus trip to guelph one day last week mr and mrs jim jones spent saturday attending a school re union at mount forest where mrs jones attended school sunday callers on mrs joseph jones were mrs john hopkins miss hilda hopkins mr and mrs wm hopkins maurice and jim hopkins i land judging competition to be held near claremont the ninth annual land judg ing competition for ontario county will be held on friday july 16 in the claremont area a true appreciation of ihe soil and its management through proper land use prac tices carries more significance each day in modern farming because of this the ontario de partment of agriculture and the metropolitan toronto and region conservation authority are cooperating in sponsoring this land judging competition in ontario county instruction will be given on the various soil types during ihe morning period there will also be discussion on how to best use the various soil ivpes from a crop point of view dur ing the afternoon the contest ants will be given the opportun ity on a farm in the claremont area to put into practice what they have learned during tha morning instruction period the competition will he divid ed into three classes juniors must he 12 years of age hut must not have reached their 16th birthday the intermediate class will be made up of young men between the ages of 16 and 21 while the senior class will be made up of men 21 years of age and over this land judging competi tion has been well attended in the past it is hoped that a large number of 4h members junior farmers and senior farmers will again lake advant age of this competition to gain a better appreeiaton of the soils on their own farm and in ontario county
