should ave studied in theology in university he should have passed gtsrie 13 algebra but he didnt and as a result he has become one of the best physical education teachers stouffville district high school has ever had he is james rehill teacher and friend of several hundred students that have passed under his guidance since 195s but in reality he shouldnt even be here jim barely through being a student himself at 31 was born in collingwood he attended high school in midland where he missed his algebra as a result he was unable to enter the ministerial college he had planned to attend and took second choice by applying at mcmaster in hamilton he thought he would stay a year in the steel city then re turn to toronto and try at the college again however mcmaster proved to be what he wanted in a school and he requested per mission to stay on for his first three years at mcmaster jim undertook part- time work for the ymca he still didnt have any idea that h would teach physical education half way through his third year he was aked by a direc tor of the y to accept a position on the staff jim agreed and went to camp with a group of boys it was there he decided y work was not for him he found the pay low and the hours long tioneer student mcmaster always willing to keep up with other universities decided that it was time to teach physical education they started the course in 1957 with six students jim rehill was one of them we were the guinea pigs he said we pioneered the corse if the training didnt work out for him mr roliill still had the background and qualifications to teach english it was his fourth and last year at mcmaster and he enjoyed the course he came through with flying colours following graduation jim began the task of landing a per manent teaching position he drafted seven forms to different schools and sent a letter to stouffville wheres stonftville f the letter he decided would he a last resort in case the a single hit by chick car negie for port perry late in the sixth inning broke up a score less ball game and gave the merchants a slim 10 victory over greenwood the game was played tuesday night in the claremont park carnegies single brought home pitcher carl earl who reached first on a double error i seven neatlytyped forms failed to respond for him j fluun even w stouffville was i had heard of earl popped up to orr have moved to their new home in king city we wish them every it a couple of times but couldnt tell anyone how to get there stouffville district high school answered his letter and following a personal interview he had decided three things it was a challenge physical education could be better and he respected mr duxbury the principal with this in mind he ac cepted the job he has changed the attitude of the sportsminded at the school when he arrived he found the students with an inferiority complex when they competed they would go out to lose he said but now theyre out there to win and are pretty disappointed when they dont jim explained that the students in 1958 thought they wer pretty good but he found out they had hardly been out of the immediate area to compete he arranged outoftown competition for them and when they saw how good everyone else was it took the wind out of their sails they settled down after discovering they werent the best in the country today theyre still not the best in the country but they ai much better mr rehill has given them the incentive and instruc tion and in the past seven years it has been paying off only three records remain unbroken since 1958 the rest have all tumbled while he has been on the staff jim starts off the physical education season with football then carries on with volleyball basketball gymnastics badminton and track and field it takes some doing to keep up with the rules lo all thos games he teaches and coaches the numerous clubs in the school during basketball season he has three teams to look after besides physical education he also teaches music and health he has taught english jim gives up evenings weekends and a good portion of hit spare time to help the students advance in their sports people say it must be nice to get two months off in the sum mer people dont realize however that two months barely cover all the extra time he donates perfect track size the image imprinted on this writers mind of a physical education teacher being a 6 5 200 pound strapping giant was soon forgotten after seeing jim rehill short only 5 7 and light a mere 133 pounds jim de scribes himself as being the perfect track size size and weight mean nothing though if you are able to carry out your assign ments jim can and does during the interview for the position at sdhs jim recalled a member of the board commenting you dont exactly look lik whipper billy watson however if there was any doubt in that members mind then its gone now sings and dances besides knowing every sport in the book backwards jim is also talented musicwise singing he sounds like a happy me dium between roy orbison and mario lanza on the dance floor he and his wife shirley are nothing short of fred astaire and ginger rogers jim explained how he became interested in dancing while in university i received a call from arthur mur rays dance school saying that i had just won 25 worth of free dance lessons i went three or four times learned as much as i could then left when my free time was up i received a request to enroll in their 100 course but refused jim said that his wife loves latin american dancing and he practiced it during his free course now married with two sons david james 4 and michael john 2 jim is quite content and satisfied the way things have worked out for him i like stouffville and i like the people that live here h said i have my hands full and have no desire to move on jim expressed a desire to obtain a masters degree in phys ical education but has no immediate plans regarding it student iike sons jim gets a personal feeling of pride and satisfaction watch ing his students excel in their respective sports theyre like sons lo me he commented they grow up they get better and i feel good knowing ive had a part lnit he was thrilled to hear that two of his students have ex pressed desires lo teach physical education comments from other coaches mean a lot to jim rehill speaking on how well a student plays a game is the same as say ing the coach has done a good job instructing him to some of the students jim is more a friend than teacher hell take part in their pastime sports teach them th more intricate motions and be an allround good buddy however being a good buddy doesnt mean the student will get away with anything they respect and obey him for what he is a teacher the academic regulation regarding sports although dying in most ontario communities is still upheld at stouffville district a student will only be allowed to compete in spor if he has 50 and no failures 55 and one failure or 60 and two failures if the student doesnt meet these standards he may just as well forget competitive sports stouffville district high school has come a long way sine jim rehill was appointed to the staff it has a long way to go sportswise but the man who can do it is ready willing and able yes he shouldnt even be here but were glad he is we hope ht stays success in their new surround ings mr and mrs arthur iritz of toronto called on mr and mrs cecil nichols on sunday after noon mr and mrs r g hohhs of toronto spent sunday with mr and mrs perry bennett grades 4 and 5 of ii
