7 the war advancing about ten miles in one day the main road to mons was just one steady stream of troops guns ammuni tion and supplies the streets were just lined with people and flags the people were so over come with joy they didnt know what to do just imagine they nad been under german rule since 1914 we marched into mons on the morning that the armistice was signed i think this battalion is coins back to ottawa as a unit many thanks for your box and letters best wishes of the season to all as ever murray a soldiers letter 1919 silage for sows excessive weight gains in sows is expensive and ineffici ent advises j g norrish department of animal husban dry ontario agricultural col lege guelph gilts should be permitted to gain 100 pounds during the first breeding season in subsequent reproduction periods a 75lbs gain is adequate the phase just before breed ing until farrowing is referred to as the sows dry period weight control during this time is important if a sow herd is to remain efficient and productive since overfat swine will farrow smaller litters since weight gained during the dry period is generally lost when farrowing and nursing sows should weigh the same after each litter is weaned weigh- can be fairly well regulated i the sows are reared on pasture in summer and hay or silage in winter succulence and ease in handling make silage preferred to hay during winter however trials at the ontario agri cultural college indicate that each sow will cat up to ten lbs of corn silage daily says mr norrish yet slightly better sow and subsequent litter per formances are obtained with 4 pounds of regularly balanced sow ration and six pounds of silage this amount of silage re sults in a daily saving of two pounds of ration if the diet consists mostly of nine to ten pounds of corn silage then a special concentrate mixture of protein vitamins and minerals must be added it was grandmas first visit to hollywood and the first time shed bought a new hat in years all went well until a sudden rainstorm caught her unprepared on the street panic seized her and catching up her ample skirts flung them over her head lady a passerby shouted your lezs are show ing grandma peeped out of the folds of her dress and panted the legs are 60 yean old the hat u new the following is a copy of a letter written from the front lines in belgium in 1919 by mr murray plpher son of mrs john plpher of lcmonvllle st loeer belgium jan 12 1919 dear cousin i must write and tell you how we enjoyed that src box of doughnuts which you sent one fellow said they were the best he ever tasted he said he would always remember me even when he was put r his grave he said he would roll over and say to himself god bless pipher and his doughnuts they sure were good they were just as iresh as when they wore made your box was the first i re ceived for xmas with the ex ception of a box of candy the red cross sent me we spent christmas in genval a little town not very far from brus sels we had a dining room of a hotel there for a mess room on xmas day wo hsi the tables drawn up together in two long rows and covered with white paper there were xmas crack ers and some real canadian ap ples on the tables we had roast mutton roast turkey dressing mashed potatoes and gravy and lots of plum pudding with sauce we had a pretty good dinner but eats were not the only good thing we had our brigadier- general ana the colonel came in and the general made a speech and told us that we were to make our first move toward de mobilization very soon it was pretty good news to us for we thought that we were on our way to germany of course making a start doesnt mean that we will be home right away for it will take months to get back say we have one of the best colonels there is in the british army com gault no doubt you have heard of him he raised and equipped this batta lion and brought it over in 1914 he has been wounded four times losing a leg he is in command of the battalion now and i guess he will take it home well i have had some great experiences during the last year even if i was a little late in get ting out here i went through most of the heavy fighting last summer the cambrai scrap was the worst our battalion came out with eightyseven men our colonel col stuart was killed i lost many good friends there i will never forget the sunday after we came out when we were lined up for church pa rade how small the battalion looked only a mere handful of men compared with what there were the sunday before i be lieve that it was in this scrap that gordon french and len honey were killed i see where len honey won the vc after cambrai we had two weeks rest then went up in re serve for a couple of weeks near valenciennes on the 7th of nov we took over the line which at that time was right at the bel gianfrench border we march ed up with full packs we pas sed through a large town where there were all kinds of people out on the streets and flags fly ing we thought we must be miles behind the front line but just when we got out of the town we were ordered to take off our packs and get ready to go in the line just then fritz put over a few shells and the rattle of machine guns told us that he was only a little way ahead things quieted down about midnight and we crept up to the next town and found that he had left the next morning we took another village and then we were held up for the rest of the day that night though he beat it for all he was worth and on the morning of the 9th we set off in pursuit and made the biggest advance of
