fitting tribute to the former clerk of pickering tv p whose faithful service to the munici pality extended over a period of 33 years mr johnston his wife his mother and his son allan occupied headtable seats at a banquet held at the annondale golf and country club south of picker ing village the highly successful event was arranged by deputyreeve mrs jean mcpherson the reeve clif ford laycox was the master of ceremonies mr and mrs johnston were presented with a beau tiful hifi set in addition mr johnston received a gold engraved wrist watch p and its people he said following hector and don ald beaton he is only the third clerk to hold this office in the municipality mr mowbray said that although his leaving this position aroused a feeling of sad ness as it marked the end of an the stouffville tribune dear sir the stouftville tribune has been coming to our home for several years and we consider it a very fine weekly news me dium in the issue cf feb 25th the letter of mr john addison mp concludes with some con fusing statements regarding the canada pension plan as presen ted by the government being a contributory plan and requiring ten years to ma ture after being enacted in 1966 as proposed how does mr ad dison arrive at the following conclusion and i quote this means that next year everyone that is 69 will receive the basic 75 old age security the next year the age will be dropped to 68 and so on until 1970 when everyone reaching the age of 65 will receive s75 a month plus 104 provided by the canada pension plan has mr addison not famil iarized himself with all lands should be made 90 exempt from fire costs the issue was reopened for discussion at a meeting on monday night in the recorded vote that fol lowed both councillor waring and councillor donald camp bell voted against the bylaw appoint dcptreasurer mr ronald mitchell who joined the pickering twp office staff in november of last year was made deputytreasurer following a rather lengthy dis cussion on the issue although councillor donald campbell contended that mr mitchell a qualified chartered accountant should assume the full respon sibility of the treasurers posi tion councillor wm newman felt that he would still require some assistance from the clerk a female clerk will be hired to the treasurers department wants weeds removed mr cecil phillips cone 5 as ked the council to consider the cleanup of a sideroad near his property that was unused and grown up with brush and weeds councillor wm newman supported the request he said that mr phillips operated a clean farm but was continually frustrated by weeds that were permitted to go unchecked on the township road allowance mr newman suggested that if the situation was reversed the township would send a man in to clean up the premises reeve laycox said that the council was in sympathy with the complaint it will be dis cussed further by the road com mittee this week altona hold safety poster contest the ontario county farm safety council is again sponsor ing a farm and home safety poster competition this is the fifth year for this competition and it has been highly success ful last year 439 boys and girls from 32 rural schools in ontario county took part 198 silver dollars were distributed as prize money prizes will he awarded on a township basis and the compe tition is open to grades 5 lo 8 in all rural
