monday afternoons at 4 pm until 530 in the upper hall of st andrews united church under the leader ship of brown owl mrs l cox- worth tawny owls a gallic- han and m shallhorn and pac kie susan phases intelligence handicraft health and service and a number of requirements in each category must be met before the award is made former cashel couple mr and mrs t wegg mark 50th anniversary on sunday nights in the ear ly 1900s telfer wegg who lived in a small hamlet called cashel would travel the three and a half miles to attend church meetings in unionville regularly attending the same meetings was a teenaged girl named gertrude may weather- ill how telfer and gertrude got to know each other is their own personal secret but eventually tbe pair became well acquaint ed telfer would drive his lady friend home after the meetings in his sleek new buggy drawn by a fleetfooted horse thats how it all started on february 24 1915 the late rev erend j j ferguson tied the knot uniting the young couple in holy matrimony in a simple service at the central method ist church in unionville married on birthday that was a big day for telfer wegg but even bigger for nis new bride gertrude turned 20 on the same day lost her maid en name but gained a huband and lost her teenage days but started a brand new way of life on february 24 1965 the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their apartment in stouftville fifty years five decades halt a cen tury no matter how you look at it thats a long time how ever mr and mrs wegg have no complaints as a matter of fact theyre planning for their sixtieth anniversary after they were married the couple moved into tellers home in cashel and took up farming they spent 45 years on the farm before retiring in 1960 and moving to stouftville telfer did mixed farming au- ring the younger years of his married life then changed to dairy farming kaised horses however his real interest lay in the raising and training of clydesdale horses his efforts have been rewarded in the winning of ribbons and medals live good and but at the canadian national fxhl- bition in toronto and at horse shows in guelph with the coming of the mech- 1 anical age the horse soon lost its job on the farm tractors worked so well explained mr wegg there was nothing for the horse to do as the tractors came in the horses went out we just kept with the trends he added times havent always been good however there was that day in 1929 the depression was so bad recalled telfer i dont know how we lived through it but the weggs did through it taking the with the bad weve had our ups downs said mrs wegg the times have been kind to us with the hired help on the farm a husband and a son mrs wegg had her work cut out for her in keeping them fed their son john lives in un ionville and their grandson telfer resides in hanover mrs wegg has a sister mrs laura smith living in rich mond hill and two brothers bert weatherill of markham and bob
