mrs joan mcfhersoh the council of the twp of pickering has approved a 500 raise for the reeve of the municipality although some members felt that the position was worthy of a 1000 increase the reeves salary that stood at 3000 in 19g1 was the subject of debate at a regular meeting last week councillor herb wank recommended that the figure should be raised to 4000 councillor wm newman agreed that a 500 increase was not enough the work load is getting bigger and bigger he said 1 think the reeve has great responsibilities and his time is used quite extensively one cant get anywhere by pinching on individuals the taxpayers wouldnt even notice the increase its so small continued councillor wank honorary position its an honorary position contended deputyreeve mrs jean mcpherson she said such a unable to attend in person harry newman is a well known and highly regarded res ident of pickering both for his community activities and as a practicing lawyer from the time of his law studies in toron to and his call to the ontario bar in 1911 he has come to be noted as an authority on cor poration law one of mr newmans princi pal civic interests has been his lifelong association with the lions club after he joined the service group in 1920 he was soon elected to local and inter national office and continued as an officer of the world body until he was elected international president in 1921 at the recent lions international convention in toronto with 40000 in at tendance mr newman was the special guest of honour as the earliest president in attendance the opening of the new ajax
