meeting of the metropolitan toronto and region conservation authority held at the east york town ship municipal offices last week saw the election of officers to the nine advisory boards and appointment of members the mtrca administers the watersheds of the etobicoke humber don rouge duffin creek highland creek and petticoat creek lying within a looosquaremile area the authority is principally con cerned with flood control establishment of conservation areas land use historical sites and reforestation throughout the area chairman of the authority is dr g ross lord peng one of were conducted by the gideons of the toronto area as they told of what god is doing through the distribution of his word in 76 countries of the world this special sunday was designated by the gideons of the local york county camp as gideon sunday in the town churches of york county another special church service sunday will be held in the country churches on the 16th day of may some changes in this schedule have been made to accommodate all the churches the york county gideon camp is one of the 165 camps in canada distributing free copies of the bible last fall some 2600 bibles and testaments were placed in the york coun ty schools corrective institu tions hospitals hotels motels etc the first bibles were placed by the canadian gideons in a toronto hotel in 1911 since that time nearly 5 million cop ies of the scriptures have been placed the world total is well over 57 million the gideons a christian laymans organization work in close association with the chur ches of nearly every denomina tion they are required to be members or adherents of some recognized branch of the chris tian church and look upon themselves as an arm of the church helping to carry out christs high commission ac cording to 11 corinthians chap ter 5 and verse 20 the budget of the canadian gideons this year is 340000 of this amount 60000 is des ignated for the camps in india the support given to the me morial bible plan by the chris tian public has made a signif icant contribution toward rea ching the financial objectives as a consequence of this scriptural activity the gideons annually receive thousands of letters the writers are people with the same basic message- from all walks of life and all fsay thank you humility faith and obedience were the elements of the bibli cal gideons character and this is the standard the gideon as sociation has always sought in its members these members are businessmen in position of responsibility who possess sing ular characteristics and abili ties men of vision and action are sought and in canada to day there are 2084 of these men they are members of an inter national band of some 23000 in 65 countries assisting them in canada are 1036 breed meetings are on in toronto the holstein and guernsey meetings are on wed nesday at the royal york hotel- the annual meeting of the beef improvement association starts on thursday and it com bines with the meeting of the ontario cattle breeders asso ciation on friday again at the royal york hotel the beef meeting and the cat tle breeders meetings i think have a great deal to offer to commercial livestock men the beef meeting features top speakers on beef production and the meeting on friday has livestock health as its main theme we are fortunate in york county that these meet ing
