fit 10 the stouffviue tribune thavliy february 13 1965 men of senior bowling league display skill on alleys herbie simpson bill grove 66 les kowe 77 kay floury 70 senior mens bowling league has members past eighty year mark bowling the sport that knows no age limit is proving itself every other friday here in stouffville a group of men known as the senators fill the six alleys for an afternoon of fun exercise and relaxation some of them are over 80 originating in agincourt back in 1954 the bowling league has grown throughout the years and has some 50 members a group of 15 bowlers started the organ ization and they accepted stouff- ville players who drove down lor the fun upon the opening of the stouftville bowling cen tre the members decided to bowl one week in stouftville and the i next in agincourt so it has been for the last 12 years and i so it will probably be for the next 12 i dave macdonald and the late fred yeamans were the two i who got the league on its feet 1 dave still bowls today and at a mere 72 was chairamn last year this year andy williams heads the group no age limit there is no age limit in the league but the executive likes i to have regular members a per son just out of his teens has as much chance of getting on a team as one who just turned 85 however most of the members are over 50 there arc no set teams in the league the six captains choose names from a hat and those selected will play for the desig nated captains this years cap tains are dave macdonald bcccher poyser john stroud norm mcneil john kennedy and harold burwash the men bowl an astounding four games every friday and pay 25c a game at the end the hosts buy the visitors coffee however bowling alleys usu- j ally close down in the summer and to pass the time waiting for next fall the men have lawn bowling leagues in agincourt and stouftville actually the lawn bowling originated before alley bowling but the men en joy both the men receive prizes and trophies for their bowling feats every spring at the annual ban quet usually the banquet is held in agincourt but this year there is talk of moving it to stouftville the banquet costs each man si 75 which covers the cost of the food and service and some of the prizes rosted 420 game the scores indicate these men know what they are doingdave martin has held the high single of 361 since 1958 but lost it 2 months ago to alex ratcliff who rolled off a 420 game only 30 points short of a perfect line the men have their own fa vourite styles of bowling some but not too many use the three- step approach most of the men stand at the foul line and de pend on wrist action to get the ball down the alley bill grove 66 adds a kick with his left foot for extra power his shot is speedy and accurate frank mason who is 72 still uses the threestep approach but keeps the speed down to gain the accuracy cliff lemon 74 shoots from the line at the left corner of the alley and angles his- ball toward the head pin don mason 53 and john winch 60 are both line shooters with winch bowling over 200 in 50 of his games john kennedy 67 fires from the hip with an added twist in his wrist the ball seems to have a mind of its own as it curves down the alley unique styles the styles are unique and amazing the competition be tween the men is quite high all endeavouring for high games to defeat their friends most of the men shoot 150 games and only a young 20 yearold tribune reporter failed to attain the mens dummy score when in vited to roll off a couple of games members of the league from stouftville are harold carruth- crs ray fleury bill grove dawson hare harvey houck norm jarvis del jennings bert lickorish cliff lemon frank mason alex ratclift bill rise- brough les rowe henry slack john underwood andy williams and cliff king these are the regulars however there are a number of other men who are unable to make it each week but bowl when they can men who are retired from their jobs and have nothing to do are
