mr and mrs john knipriiisiam heise hill enjoyed a family jralhcriiir in the community hall at victoria square on saturday evening on the occasion of their 50th weddinx anniversary staff thoto mr and mrs john empringham mark 50th wedding anniversary edna clubine and john em pringham were invited to a par ty in 1912 they were strang ers to each other until that night he asked her to dance they became acquainted and started keeping steady comp any three years later on january 60 1915 they were married the couple moved into a house on the don mills road just north of victoria square they have been there ever since born near richmond hill ed na said their present home is the furthest away she has ever jived john was born in scar boro township to contrast the building boom of today the empring- hams recall the earlier days when there were no homes at 11 between victoria square and gormley don mills road was a rough twolane dirt road until the 1930s mr empringham has been a farmer all his life and today still works on his own proper ty he started farming with a halfdozen milk cows and a lew hens earl the only son has his own farm just south of his fa thers place a daughter nor dif ference in farming in those days he said it was simple today though farming has become mechaniz ed and farmers are specialized plenty of money is required to start in farming these days he continued the machinery costs a fortune and you cant do without it education was more of a lux ury than a necessity in those days neither one of them went further than grade eight from school youd go right onto the farm and the educa tion wasnt necessary he ex plained the empringhams owned their first car in 1927 it was a model t ford before that cars were more of a novelty than a necessity the couple look back over the half century with complete satisfaction oh we had our ups and downs smiled edna weve been lucky in farm ing and have done well added mr empringham to keep a marriage secure mrs empringham explained the only way was to give and take only the immediate members of the family twentyseven in number attended the golden wedding anniversary gather ing held saturday at the vic toria square community cen tre a unique gift presented to the couple came from the com munity of victoria square a money tree set in a golden jar had fifty dollars taped to the branches in the form of one and two dollar bills an open house was not held this year because as mrs em pringham explained so many people dont make it to their fiftieth so we had our big open house on our fortieth anniver 1961 and for nearly the past two years she has been a pat ient in the stouftville nursing home mrs burnett was a daughter of the late mr and mrs edward morris of stouft ville and was a member of the
