endorsed funeral for the late mrs henry ogden largely attended sugar and spice by bill smiley a christmas crisis or two may be im gelling old but that christmas rush seems a little rushler every year and every year it takes me a little jpneer to eetjjver it physically financially and psychologically everything this year was going along fine that is in its usual maudlin state tree wasnt bought exam papers un marked christmas cards not purchased let alone sent no idea of who would be at our place for christmas dozens of presents to buy for people who wouldnt be satisfied with the moon wrapped in solid silver but this was normal and no cause for alarm then things began to go haywire first my wife discovered she had a hernia this was rather a blow to all hands she thought it an extremely unlady like ailment 1 associated a hernia with wearing a great belt called a truss 1 dont know why you wear them but i havent been reading those ads on the back of true confessions all these years for nothing but trust her it was merely a dainty hernia of the esophagus or sarcophagus or something a tiny puncture in her diaphragm not to mention her selfesteem the next thing was worse my daughter my delicate little flower my baby was invited to the christmas prom there was hell to pay shes only a child its ridiculous shes certainly not going to start running around with a gang at her age first i pointed out that it wasnt a ganjr that hail asked her only one kid then i observed that the child is nearly fourteen- tfeari most of her mothers clothes and is legally enrolled at at the high school where the dance was to be held the childs aunt and other adult sympathizers intervened for her and the old battle ae began to soften but i almost polled it what kind of a boy is he she demanded i told her tht as far as i knew he was a nice lad that it wasnt his fault his dad was an alcoholic his mother ran around with men nd he had to work in the poolroom on saturdays she swallowed the works and it took me a week to con vince her that he was a perfectly normal 15yearold in grade 10 with the biggest paper route in town i shouldnt have been so smart it cost me the following a new pair of shoes a new dress which is suitable for wearing to next years prom and nothing else except that you cant wear the same dress you wore to last years prom and about 12 hours of listening to the old lady telling about how tough things were for girls when she was 13 right on top of this came the worstest thing of all we had three invitations for the friday before christmas a staff partv dinner party and the biennial pre christmas buffet and brag of the youngatheart fighter pilots i had a terrible time making up my mind which to attend they inrltedwlves to the first two the third one is held only fywo years because ii takes the voungatjicarts two years to gel oyer ii liter i so home from the fighter pilots party and h buckeu ol plma i knew id made the rijht imagine exposing your sweetiepie to a lot of rich foods and stun and her with a hernia and all that was about the only thing that wasnt exposed there for a day or two oh well everything else went off on schedule the tree fell over four times the turkey was tougher than an old rubber hoot all our ptesents had to be exchanged because they didnt fit and we had the shortosl sweet est cocktail party on boxing day that weve ever had usually when yon nsk people to come from five to seven pm you lever the last couple out sometime early on december 27 this year it was all over at 530 id forgotten to order the booze kju f c a i farm tv series to be shown jan 567 a a wall agricultural representative york county there are two items of inter est for york county farmers coming up in the first week of 1965 one is a new venture for the department of agriculture its a series of three farm pro grammes on television they run on three consecutive days januaiy 5 6 and 7 start at 1030 each morning and ate an hour in length the first one on tuesday deals with crops wednesdays pro gramme is on livestock and on thursday the business end of farming with tccords analysis and decisions will be featured essentially each programme is made up of visits to four or five farms with the farm own ers doing practically all the talk ing the farms visited are not large ultramodern set ups but more the average sie units that are doing well with crops and livestock the opinions and ideas from the farm owners on the programme should be quite useful i suppose most farmers would not want to be caught dead watching tv at 1030 in the morning it seems like an odd time of day hut the only time available on the cbc network and it really isnt all that ridic ulous to take an hour off in the morning to watch a programme that is very closely connected with our business if its sensible to drive twenty or thirty miles on a stormy night in the winter to a farm meeting then its also sensible to take a look at these programmes annual meeting the annual meeting of the york county soil crop jm- piovement assoc is on wednes day january 6th its at the plaza auditorium in newmarket and it starts at 1030 am the first hour of the meeting will be spent watching the tv program me for that day several televi sion sets will be installed in the hall there will also he reports on demonstrations carried out this year on the morning program me and special door prizes for those at tne meeting befoie 1030 guest speaker for the day will be dr j e winch of the crop science department oac dr winch is a forage specialist and will be talking about the newest ideas on getting best perform ance from hay and pasture crops there will also be a demon- stration and information given on the ventilation of farm build ings lunch will be served at noon as usual and all york county farmers are invited to this meeting finally this is the week to get started on farm accounts we have account books at our office in newmarket for the price of a post card telephone call or bet ter still drop in and pick one up hold farmers week 65 at oac in feb farmers from across ontario will have an opportunity to pro fit from the latest information on soils crops and livestock dur ing farmers week 65 spon sored by the ontario agricutural college guelph february 22nd through to the 26th 1965 five special das have been arranged to deal with the follow ing crops sessions according to their particular interests de tailed information on the pro gram for each day can be ob tained from county offices of the ontario department of agricul ture some people get there punuhcr jas thomas editor jas mekean advertising care of christmas gift plants this chiistmas many people will receive plants as a gift since many of these plants have been grown in cool humid sur roundings they are often not well adapted to the warm dry atmosphere of modern homes horticulturists with the ontario department of agriculture sug gest giving the plants special care to maintain prolong flowering set the pot on some pebbles or coaise giavel in a tray add water regularly to the tray but keep the level low so that the bottom of the pot is not con stantly wet keeping water in
