conference i was asked if i would write something on the conference there has been ex cellent coverage by the daily newspapers that 1 feel that i need only outline what the conference did and make some personal observations first of all that the confer ence happened at all was due to the personal influence and initiative of the governorgen eral and madame vanier their personal concern was shown by the fact that the governorgen eral was with the delegates at least once each day madame vanier was present for the whole conference and visited the small roundtable discus sion groups i am sure that it was their appeal that brought together from newfoundland to british columbia a cross- section of the professional life of our nation from supreme court judges to lawyers from university presidents to high school principals they came not only psychiatrists but the whole range of medicine was represented in the delegates taking part also were commu nity social workers federal officials of the department of national health and welfare and clergy from most of the denominations english and french speaking jewish prot estant and roman catholic they were there because of their interest and work on behalf of the family in the opening address at ri- deau hall the governor general set forth the religious signifi cance of the family the ad dresses at the plenary sessions were permanence and chang es in ideas on the family by dr phillipps garique dean of the faculty of the social scien ces of the university of mon treal the inner life of the family by dr nathan epstein psychiatristinchief jewish general hospital montreal social forces affecting the family by dr kaspar naegele dean of the faculty of arts of the university of british col umbia following each address a panel of experts expressed their opinions on the issues raised by the speaker this was followed with questions or re marks from the delegates tuesday evening a panel of six young people spoke on the theme age of choice on monday and tuesday after noons the delegates met in small roundtable groups each group was assigned one of the 1 different aspects of fam ily life these ranged from law and the family to leisure and the family i took part in the one on preparing for mar riage and family life these groups brought the delegates together in their special area of concern and work with the fa mily here was the place where problems new experiments and results could be compared here insights were given as to what was happening across the country and a great deal of help was provided to each oth er wednesday morning was spent drawing together all that had been said at the confer ence this was done through a panel speaking on the subject canadian families present and future the conference closed with what i can only call a fa mily atmosphere their excel lencies were present for the noon lunch followed by the closing address on the signifi cance of the conference by dr francis leddy resident of the university of windsor what about the results of such a conference the gover nor general in opening the sessions reminded us that we were not to expect miracles from our four days together but he hoped that this was a beginning of increased concern and work ior all our families and it proved to be a good be ginning the delegates were ex posed in a positive way to the thinking and the work of peo ple from the other professions they discovered what was be ing done in other areas of this vast land they went home with new ideas and a broader vision of the work for the fa mily this influence of the con ference will be seen not only in the immediate personal work of the delegates but will also be expressed in their professional organizations i believe that a new climate of cooperation and support for each other has been achieved this exchange of ideas and knowledge will grow as the vanier institute on the family begins to function and all of our families will re ceive the benefits one worthwhile personal by product of the conference that i have not noticed in reports was in the area of biculturism i was impressed by the ability the warmth and the vitality of the french canadians through out the sessions the remarks of a roman catholic priest from montreal that he apprec iated being exposed to the eng lish way of thinking revealed that this was a two way ex change the separatists are gi ving us a distorted picture of what is happening in quebec i feel that the present unrest in quebec which is spilling over into canada is a revolt against the old way of living and thinking it is an explosion in all directions and not simply directs against the english ca nadians if we are prepared to have patience and understand ing for canadians of french or igin while at the same time holding on to those things- that we consider our heritage we shall see a greater day ahead for our nation the conference found no cureall for the problems of the family but there was develop ed a deeper awareness a great er confidence that the work with the family is of first im portance to the nation we re- 4 of ike week you trying out for mister repulsive of ism or so alize afresh that the parents hold the key of the well being of the family there is now a real hope that in the future there will be more coordinated research on the family in can ada with this will be coupled a greater effort to help the fa milies of our nation achieve emotional health and happiness under the conditions of modern living the dav may come when the nation will be as grateful as the delegates now are that their excellencies the gover nor- general and madame va nier called this first canadian conference on the family altona mrs stanley thompson was hostess on saturday last when the words to say farewell to friends and not feel saddened by the thought that such a duty sends but each of us has memories of fellowship wellspent and times of need or sorrow the comfort you have
