farmers weed spraying program often too late says ag rep a a wall agricultural representative york county the 1964 crop season seems to be off to a good start we may be a week or ten days later than we would like to be but everything so far seems to be doing well the weather was good for seeding rain didnt hold up the job too much and yet we got enough to insure good germination sod crops are growing very well now and wheat is off to a good start winterkill hasnt been serious in either wheat or sod best of all the weather made it possible for a lot of the grain corn acreage to be planted in reasonably good time a delay in spring grain seeding can be tolerated but it seriously limits yields of grain corn we will have problems to worry with this year for sure but at least we are off to a good start the worst break for farmers in york county this year hap pened on the marsh at brad ford the big blow on may 9th caused extensive damage to crops aheady planted we are hoping that recovery will be good enough for at least part of a crop but at the moment many growers are just keeping their fingers crossed its a little late for replanting onions and seed shortages for some crops are a problem too this years crops will certainly be affected and its always serious to lose good topsoil from the marsh when the seed drills are fin ished the next machine that should go into action is the weed sprayer in weed spraying we are too often locking the stable after the horse has been stolen we kill the weeds after they have taken about 90 of the moisture and fertility they need most of the inquiries i get about weeds come in midsum mer for instance i have gone out to look at weed problems where chickory thistles stink- weed pigweed and lambs quar ters are waist high they are hard to kill at this stage and the worst of the damage hai already been done it may be a litle too early to spray grain now but it is an ideal time to do pastures fence rows and roughlands 1 think few gallons of 24d on these areas will pay good dividends time of spraying is crucially important with atrazine on corn many failures are caused by being too late those who depend on custom sprayers would be betcr to spray before the weeds are up inetcad of waiting and taking the risk ot being late if you want to get even with someone why not start with someone who has helped you yom w bis hardware
