establishments throughout this area for early customers and trade is expected to be brisk between now and christmas the origin of the christmas tree custom now so well esta blished in most canadian hom es is steeped in ancient tradi tions some historians trace its origin to the time of martin lu ther and it appears evident that the use of christmas trees and decorations developed first in germany and later in the scan dinavian countries during the period 1500 to 1800 no doubt the tree was a significant christ mas symbol for religious pur poses in much earlier times in north america the custom dates back to the days of the early settlers with the proba bility it was first introduced by hessian soldiers who crossed the atlantic during the time of the american revolution in recent years tree growers have been paying much more attention to pruning and shap ing trees to meet presentday standards and market require ments tastes differ and experts have various opinions on the most important qualities in choosing a tree some of the factors to be considered include needle density of foliage de sirable colour shape and bal ance species price and ease of decoration etc in some parts of the country fir and spruce are the most popular varieties in southern giusrio scotch pine a fast growing tree with many excellent qualities is the species most commonly used for those who like to cut their own tree remember to re spect the rights of the property owner and first obtain his per mission before doing any cut ting cutting of trees from pri vate or government land with out authority is a punishable offence and penalties involved may do much to mar an other wise happy christmas the wise home owner will guard against any danger with fire and follow necessary safety precautions a dried out tree can be very inflammable and if stored too long and dry bran ches tend to be brittle and shed needles easily consumers gas employees on call during holiday season mr and
