ft 1 the stouffville tribune thurify hwmfctr u 1963 editorial could wreck service club work end a sweet tooth too the federal governments gam bling laws in this country could well deal a crippling blow to all service club work if it is applied as has been the case in this and nearby localities we refer of course to the stouffville and richmond hill lions clubs hav ing to call off lucky draw evenings on which most of the tickets had al ready been sold like the outmoded liquor laws in ontario the gambling law which forbids bingos car draws raffles etc even for charitable purposes should have been remedied long ago there is enthusiastic support for all types of lotteries in this country but similar to so many other instances no party will take a stand to endorse the up dating of anything on which some minority group might be able to point the finger of taint however now that a small storm has been kicked up by a number of service clubs as well as some muni cipal council bodies government would do well to take stock of the situation attention has been drawn to the fact that should service clubs in general withdraw their charitable support government could find an other healthy bill to pay for the many public service projects these clubs undertake both premier kobarts and at torneygenera cass of ontario have gone on record as stating that tha present law was not attune to the feelings of the majority of people countries which have established lotteries have rid themselves of illegal lotteries hundreds of thousands of people have shown support for the service club operated draws all over the country and are hreaking the law by doing so why not let them be within the law for a change it has been said that such gam bling is immoral and government should not permit it but those who say this also regard the drinking of alcohol as immoral and they think nothing of accepting the many gov ernment services which government could not pay for without the huge taxes derived from the sale of liquor it would be well if stouffville lions club joined its official voice with others in bringing pressure to bear on our reluctant legislators in an effort to rid the country of un realistic law a matter of pride residents of stouffville can join with those in the immediate district in being justly proud of the enlarged district high school located on ed ward street some seven hundred persons attended the annual com mencement exercises on friday night which were coupled with the official opening of the new wing they were loud in their praise of the facilities and rightly so stouffville has come a long way educationwise in the last fifteen years one of those attending the friday night opening remarked to us at how far we had advanced since the old continuation school days with its threeteacher staff think ing back on those days we must cer tainly say that todays students never had it so good certainly the boards efforts in providing topnotch facilities in the way of building and equipment leave nothing to be desired to match these facilities with teaching proficiency equally as good may not be as easy and this is the goal at which we think they should now be aiming inspector fowler the principal speak er on friday night admitted that teachers were scarce and this fact places a heavy burden on the board education is something which never stands still there is a never- ending effort to step up the quality of facilities and teaching we dont see how the former can be much improved and some will argue that authorities have even gone too far already in providing posh buildings and expensive equipment certainly the second aim is of greater import ance and we have confidence enough in the present board that this will be where their total effort will lie in the next few years proposed site of arena is important on saturday dec 7th the elec torate of the twp of pickering will vote on the question of a new 150000 artificial ice arena presumably to serve the entire municipality we feel that it is regrettable that a proposed site has not yet been selected for this worthwhile project for unless we underestimate the thinking of the pickering people the location is of major importance we are not that naive to think that the residents in atha will be pleased to pay a share in a rink to be built in bay ridges or that parents in west rouge will appreciate an in crease in their tax bill to support such a structure to be erected at claremont a good many weeks have gone by the boards since this matter was discussed at a public gathering in brougham we would have thought that the site would have been the first question to be settled an item of almost equal importance to the cost price itself since the funds for this proposed venture will be raised on a mill rate charge across the entire township we feel that it would only be fair to erect the arena at a central point easily accessible to adults and child ren from every direction councillor wank commented last week that he would favour the pro ject regardless of the location this is a very generous and unselfish stand unfortunately however we dont feel that a crosssection of the electorate will judge the issue in this same light prior to dec 7th they will be asking some pertinent ques tions and we hope for the sake of the arena venture that someone can come up with some concrete answers no golden mile official representatives of the stouffville ratepayers association have suggested that the westerly en trance to town from ringwood is in dire need of a cleanup campaign to make it more presentable to the motoring public they made their views known at a regular meeting of council last week we agree that some of the prem ises fronting on the gateway to town are no gardens of eden as unfor tunate as this may be we can think of only one instance where the coun cil could exert its authority through the courts and even in this one mat ter any success is highly debatable other towns and townships have tried it on previous occasions and their results have been next to nil instead of requesting the council to exercise its influence in promoting an energetic cleanup campaign we would suggest that the association members themselves could take such a program on as a pet project the drive preferably to be instituted in the spring of the year should not be confined to the west or east end en trances to town but should be ex tended throughout the municipality few of us are in any position to throw stones at our neighbors but by taking part in a concentrated effort we could all help to make stouffville a cleaner and tidier place in which to live all of which harkens back to the late henry fords admonition dont find fault find a remedy lite iouffmllc iribiure established list member of the canadian weekly newspaper association and the ontario weekly newspapers association authorised u condli mail poope dtpu otuwi theres a message from santa in another part of this paper and this prompts me to pass along a suggestion or two for easing the pressures of the prechristmas rush do your christmas shopping early is a slogan we hear every year of course its a wise suggestion to follow for the best selection under the most favourable shopping conditions another equally important reminder is do your christmas mailing early to assure safe delivery in time for the holiday those gifts for relatives and friends in other parts of the country must be packed wrapped and addressed well ahead of time mailing deadlines are already posted cartons of sturdy fiberboard or corrugated are safest for parcels thin cardboard boxes could be more easily crushed in transit if newspaper is used for filling and cushioning tear it into twoinch strips flult and crinkle these and stuff the shredded paper around the sides and bottom of the gift a better idea for a shockabsorbing filler is popped pop corn its lightweight and practical and looks more like christmas than paper or how about using varioussized pine cones to fill up the package they can be used by the recipient as a holiday decoration when packing a parcel with a fancy bow cover the ribbon with the lid of a small box before wrapping in heavy paper then the bow will look perky on arrival if you have a bulky gift to wrap dont struggle with several pieces of gift wrap but instead use a christmas paper table cloth and to remove the price of the gift that is so often stamped in ink on items of glass or pottery boxes plastics etc which doesnt respond to rubbing with a damp cloth or an eraser try dabbing with a pice of cotton on which there are a few drops of lemon extract from the kitchen shelf and the ink marks usually disappear postal authorities recommend that we use sturdy wrapping paper and heavy cord or twine on all parcels that are mailed wet the cord before putting it around the parcel and when it dries it will tighten and hold more securely they caution us to be more careful in addressing our parcels so many end up in the dead letter office every christmas simply because they are improperly addressed from address should be handprinted in the upper lefthand coiner of the lop and bottom of the parcel to address should be printed across the lower half of the parcel both top and bottom sides use black crayon or heavy marking pencil ink may smudge or run when subjected to inclement weather however if you do use ink for the address cover the printing with a strip of cellulose tape to protect it from rain or snow for additional safeguarding the arrival of our packages in case the wrapping paper is torn include the name and address on the inside of the parcel the post office personnel go to great lengths to see that a parcel arrives at its destination even if it has been torn or crushed in the mails before sending away a christmas parcel we weigh it and then affix the proper amount of postage how would we weigh it upon the scales that indicate the amount of happiness it will give to its recipient of course we have no scales for this but we can judge fairly well if we know how much loving thought we have put into the choice of the gift and the care in sending it 1964 plates and drivers licences available dec 2 it was announced this week by hon irwin hasketl ontarios minister of transport that 3961 licence plates for passenger and dual purpose automobiles and motorcycles will be available from monday december 2 1063 the earliest dae in more than 20 years on the same date ontarios new system of issuing drivers licences will go into effect for these plates and drivers licences the deadline will be midnight on fridav february 28 1964 mr haskett said 1963 drivers licences and plates for passenger and dual purpose ve hicles and motorcycles will ex pire on that date and there will be no extension plates for 1964 will be used in exactly the same manner as in past years but the method of obtaining drivers licenses will be changed this will be the first step in the new plan to is sue al ontarios drivers licenc es on a three year basis expir ing on the drivers birth date the procedure will be as follows 1 plates for passenger and dual purpose vehicles and mot orcycles for 1964 may be obtain ed at all department of trans port issuing offices throughout the province or by mail from the ontario department of trans port parliament buildings tor onto 2 at any time on and after december 2 2 application forms for drivj ers licences are being sent out by mail this mailing is a two- month job which will be com pleted by the end of january as soon as drivers receive their application forms they may ob tain their new licences either at their local issuing office or by mail from the department in toronto this will be the last mass issuing of drivers licences mr haskett pointed out he em phasized that the convenience of motorists was the reason for se lecting an earlier commence ment date this year it will givo people more opportunity to pur chase their plates earlier and thus reduce the possibility of having to wait in line it will be more convenient for people go ing south for the winter and it will help to expedite a smooth changeover to the new system of issuing drivers licences the 1964 plates will be black leuering and numerals on a wrote background for commercial vehicles and trailers mr haskett said the method inaugurated in 1963 would be continued without change the sale of 1964 plates for commercial vehicles and trailers will commence on mon day march 2 1964 and these plates will again be available on a quarterly basis as well as for the whole year 19s3 plates for commercial vehicles and trailers will expire at midnight on tues day march 31st 1961 sunday school lesson golden text now thanks be unto god which always causetli us to triumph in christ and makcth manifest the savour of his knowledge by lis in every place 2 cor 214 approach to the lesson the second letter to the co rinthians is warm with the per sonal emotions of the apostle paul and studded richly with gems of personal testimony dean inge quoted in the tyn- dale bible commentary writes of all the epistles the second to corinthians is the one which contains the most intimate selfrevelations and few can read it without loving as well as honouring the author for this reason we shall find it speaks clearly to our own hearts and times the first letter paul wrote to the church at corinth con tained a number of rebukes that brought forth strong re action from some of the mem bers there followed a period during which paul wrote at least one short and more point ed letter to them and most probably paid them a visit both of these actions brought him some additional unpopular ity that is the inevitable con sequence of exercising disci pline in the church today it is too often avoided at the cost of leaving us with a largely undisciplined people pauls sensitive spirit was wounded by his exchange pastors are peo ple too and by the possibility of his having been overly severe during the same period the events recorded in acts 19 had occurred and paul had nearly died in consequence he was lonely too and somewhat rest less and it is out of this com bination of pressures that this intensely personal epistle came to be written because it was written in this spirit its main thrust is more easily grapsed if it is read through in a con temporary translation we shall then see how this great man of god had been hurt and in sulted and his very ministry and integrity called into doubt but still he loved the flock and as our lesson today shows taught them that despite the stresses disappointments and heartaches of christian service there is a satisfaction and there are rewards that make the life given over to ciirist and his editors moil claremont ontario november t 1963 the editor the stouffvillp trinune stouffville ontario dear sir these continuous votes of confidence in the federal par liament are becoming somewhat monotonous mr pearson was far too smart for the other parties he appealed to their greed for more from the taxpayers funds with an eighty percen- tum gratuity from t rountry their acceptance of this gift has left them without a chance of voting pearson out they arp afraid of the consequences it is quite apparent from the absenteeism the abstentions from voting and the general actions of the mtmbers of the avaricious parlia ment they take most of the taxpayers for stupid idiots now is the time for all unions to demand an eighty porcentum increase in wages parliament could not interfere it has set the precedent vote of confidence sugar spice by bill smiley theres a new television series on the air that is giving me an inferiority complex about the size of a giant squid maybe you havent seen it but its called mr novak and it holds me breathless and makes me wretched for one hour every sunday night its a sort of dr kildare with classroom and chalkdust and psychology instead of surgery and blood and psychology mr novak is a blond handsome young idealistic teacher of english in a high school thats enough to flatten a balding homely middle aged realistic teacher of english such as i beore the opening commercial but it isnt this sort of thing that is eating away my self- confidence its the excitement of mr novaks life that make me feel like something the caretaker forgot to sweep out on friday afternoon every week he gets involved in the damdest situation and emerges smelling of violets and looking like joan of arc and every week i get involved in the damdest situations and emerge barely mr novak saunters through the halls of his school in his well cut gray suit buttering up the principal and looking dedicated mr smiley scuttles through the halls of his school avoiding the principal and looking harassed every week mr novak tangles fearlessly with som impossible problem and solves it every week mr smiley tangles fearfully with eight impossible problems and by tha time hes finished he has 16 impossible problems in the last few weeks mr novak has outdone himself he has squelched an outbreak of racial prejudice he has caught a colleague cheating and forgiven him he has encour aged a colleague with an alcoholic wife he has pulled the principal out of hot water in the last few weeks mr smiley has undone himself he has barely lived through an outbreak of the flu he has caught a colleague trying to make off with his rubbers he has encouraged a colleague with an alcoholic mother he has got the principal in hot water you can see why this program makes me feel pretty insignificant mr novak leaps joyously from one crisis to another mr smiley totters desperately from one anticlimax to the next take this week for example ill bet you that right now thai novak is rehearsing an episode in which he defies tha school board on a matter of principle solves a hairy personal problem for one of his students and pulls the principal out of a nasty situation right now im trying to write a column my wife is downstairs teaching a piano lesson my son is across the hall practising the piano my daughter is in the bathroom roaring out the lines of her oral composition which is to be delivered tomorrow and waiting to pounce on me and make me hear it five moments ago the wonderful in the world heart of the lesson jesus speaking of prophets said by their fruits ye shall know them paul here is ask ing that the same test be appli ed to his service the evident working of the spirit through him in the conversion of out siders and the building up ot christians in the faith is evi dence that he was in the will of god experiencing the power of the spirit and marching in the triumphtrain of christ this constitutes his validation and also his great joy amw3bmms3wmb3sxsssxewb send christinas cards early select yours from our international t00thill and embassy albums
