cattle declined slightly fed cattle marketings were higher this year and heavy market ings are expected to continue as a result prices will likely be lower hogs going to market this summer were just slightly above last year but heavy marketings are expected this fall the increase forecast is 9 at around 13s0o0 per week a 13 increase is in the books for the first half of 1961 happily a good market in the states is expected to keep pork imports low but the average price for 1953 is expected to be lower than the s2t00 figure set in 1962 sheep numbers are down all across the country with the de crease from last year being r better prices are in prospect milk production shows no change from the past two years with consumption of dairy products up the surplus situation looks brighter butter sales of 313 million pounds are forecast while production is expected to be 352 million lbs so butter continues to build up but more slowly cheese production will be about 140 million pounds up 23 million from last year cheese consumption will be about 103 million pounds for egg the number of hens is lower than it has been for several years and prices should improve over last falls 43 cent average broilers are plentiful and lower beef and pork prices this fall will likely affect the broiler prices tile wheat crop this year is nearly record breaking at 691 million bushel- it is 23iigh- fr than lasi year and exceeded only in 1962 when the figure i was 702 million bushels trie oat crop is down but with a big carryover from last year the 600 million bushel supply is the largest since 1945 barley and mixetl grain supplies are good too despite lower yields here in ontario keed grain prices including corn should be lower this fall the potato crop is variable this year but total yield will likely be about the same as last years with prices similar or slightly higher and our hat is off this week to elizabeth barker of gorm- lcy crowned queen of the kur row at tiie international plow recently with inspector maynard hall- man to discuss problems of the coming terms in discussing the advisibility of such a program mr hall- man said this is a twoway street we hope that any teach er we hire would have had this training and it keeps the critic teachers on the alert i believe this is a bargain chairman of finance s r patterson agreed we are part of a teaching program he said and meeting should be called for clarification and re view of teachers credentials and the salary schedule as it applies in tsa no 3 religious education classes were considered for schools in tsa 3 this year but mr mort- son reported to the board that as yet no minister has been found with available time oth er ministers will be contacted in this regard it was suggested by s r patterson that religi ous history might be more valu able to pupils this idea will be presented to the dept of educa tion the suggestion that oral french classes be introduced into tsr no 3 schools was given more thought and nr hallman suggested the board should apply to the dept of education through his office before such classes could be established any teacher of this subject would require qualifications not only as a teacher in ontario but qualifi cations in oral french unless you have a fluent person you are not going to gain much said the inspector he suggest ed that another year the prin cipals supply teacher could be one qualified in french richmond hill has one french teacher and markham village is considering classes the estimated cost of trans portation for 196364 school year is 1250000 the
