loses licence the trustees of dicksons hill and ringwood public schools may organize a joint meeting of the two sections to outline a student safety program to cover a 2mile area of no 4s hwy this cooperative venture was suggested on friday morn ing when board members met for two hours with represent atives of the dept of trans port and the dept of high ways the gathering was ar ranged by lome morgason chairman of the dicksons hill school and prompted by the tra gic death last week of six year old louise taylor a grade 1 pupil john trew a senior traffic analyst and wm glenistcr as sistant director of highway safety agreed to attend the pub- lie meeting mr trew said that no matter what steps were taken either by his board the trustees or the school there was no gua ranteed program of highway safety both ollicials appeared to disapprove of a trustee re quest that the speed limit in the schools zones should be reduced to 45 miles per hour from the present 60 mile figure it has been proven in some instances that the slowing of ira die only tends to worsen a situation said the dept of highways spokesman must be legal mr trew said that if the board would promote a cross ing guard patrol system his of fice would support the program with warning signs and pave ment markings one shouldnt put too much faith in signs said the official he pointed out that all signs must abide by legal standards and none could be erected on a trial basis only he charged that the roots of a safely program should begin in the home and carried on in the school not with instruction once a week but every day the trustees including stuart watson dave mehaffev clarence fockler lome morgason and sgt wm shearn of markham twp po lice toured a twomile section of no 48 hwy with the depart ment officials the board mem bers voiced strong resentment over the 60 mile speed area in the ringwood and dicksons hill school zones trustee clar ence fockler contended that too much responsibility was be ing placed on the shoulders of grade school children that can be warned one minute and for get it the next he said that the ringwood board had sub mitted several pieces of corre spondence to the dept of hwys but none had been recognized mr trew said he could not re call receiving any letters from the trustees what would you do if you had to deal with matters like this all over the province asked mr glenister weve had our share of problems too my friend re plied the trustee parents have been on our backs for the past two years he said and they are concerned for good reasons too we want 10 do ihe right thing by everyone said mr trew including the children the parents the trustees and the motorists reduce speed limit or enforce present one parents urge several parents among the twentyfive be police enforced at 60 mph if its a 60 mile per hour limit they will drive at 70 said mr lome morgason chairman of the board he said thai the trustees at ring- wood had been pressing the dept of hwys for some action for several years but without success a petition is only wastepaper- basket material he said he charged that much of the roadplanning through out the province is designed by an engineer who sits at a desk with a map in his hand little does he know about the eighty children who attend this school and whose very lives are in danger every morn ing and afternoon trustee stuart watson said that he and a neighbour had transported their children to and from school every day for the past seven years parental responsibility markham twp police serge ant wm shearn suggested that an educational safety program stressed both in the home and in the school should make an impression on the pupils he said that he would be pleased to speak to the children at any time he noted that the shoul ders of the highway were suffi ciently wide but it was the crossing of the pavement thai proved hazardous a car can kill a child at 30 miles per hour as well as at 60 he said the parents must assume some responsibility said mr willis hoover he contended that it wouldnt be practical to position crossing guards at every laneway along the high way route wm sanders a teacher on the school staff noted that it would be difficult to arrive at a foolproof method no matter what program was put into practice board chairman lome mor gason said he and trustees from both ringwood and dick sons
