short 13 years to go the car population is expected to go up 50 more based on todays fig ures it is difficult to resist mention ing here how communism has overcome this problem except to state simply that the united states alone has more cars than all of the iron curtain countries combined and 25 mil lion miles of paved roads which is more than all the rest oe the world combined downtown traffic of largo cities of the future will be re stricted to 10 of all auto trips and freeways will increase it may not even help to own a small car one of those lush big city apartment houses recently posted without radio tv cars and telephones none of these modern inventions were in common use in the ear ly days in boomington in those days if one wished to vi sit with a neighbour one could not just go o the telephone or jump into the car and drive over neighbours did depend more on each others company than we do today farmers could do up the chores early and spend sin evening with friends on the next concession driving there by buggy or cut ter with the old gray mare they could not spend their eve nings listening to the radio or watching television but depend ed or each other for their social limes together school picnic of course in summer the farm ing community was too busy to take much time olt for pleasure therefore when they did it was all the mote enjoyable in clays gone by the annual mussel- mans lake school picnic held the last saturday in june was an event that few people mis sed this was a special occa sion for the schools when sev eral school sections within driv ing distance of the lake would each send a wagon load or two of children the wagons were freshly cleaned or painted with bright red wheels harness of the wellgroomed horses would be cleaned shining and berib- boned the wagon decorated with evergreen trees and flags what a day this was for the children who gathered early in the afternoon at the school were collected by the driver and with songs and laughter trans ported to appletnns park la ter parents would come with mmmm girls f you have dull and hard to h manage hairwell 61 ve you proper attention plus a lot of extra care i ters grow and go community parties during the sumer also the churches held strawberry or honey festivals garden parties ice cream socials etc in the fall there were annual hot fowl suppers 25c a supper in the old hall on the lot where tom white now liver the large up stairs hall served as a commun ity centre for many activities in tlie 80s and 90s later the fowl suppers were held in the christ- ian church basement in the fall also were held husking and paring bees the latter were held in the evenings when the young people gathered at a farm house to prepare apples for apple butter to be boiled next day in large kettles out doors when three to six or more bushels of apples had been peeled then tlie fun began games were played spelling or geography matches or debates were held followed by lunch then couples paired off for the homeward walk or ride winters not dull one might think now that the winters would be dull for young people but such was not the case there were social ga therings skating bobsledding and tobogganing quilting bees allowed neighbours to meet and exchange news and gossip and some women even look along the bread dough to bake rather than miss the friendly visit highlights of the winter season were those evenings when the laughing voices the ring of skates on the ice of ponds at cliff lemons art storrys ed gar storrys or albert laws could be heard in the sparkling moonlight but best of all were those times when cliff or art watson fairies or dawson bur nett would come along with their fine horses and sleighs gathering a load of young peo ple to go skating at mud lake cold or snow were forgotten in the fun many a young man fell head over heels accidentally or otherwise l out of the sleigh hey truck and tractor drivers dont despair just give us a call and wait in their warm roomy kitchen while the horses were stabled then we walked across the snow ttail up to the lake the boys had spent the afternovm cleaning off the ice perhaps having a game of hockey then flooding the surface rushing home for chores and supper then returning for fun some times frances would make taffy on snow in the shack and how good it tasted per haps 30 to 50 or 60 young peo ple enjoyed the keen air and ex ercise for 2 or 3 hours then home again not minding the cold drive because was not that special someone sitting close and everyone singing joking or teasing after the winters skating often oyster suppers were in order this afforded an other occasion for an evening of fun and games singing school winter was also the time for singing school or sparking school as it was sometimes cal led these were the times when seneca baker or his daughter tillie a music teacher gathered together the young men and women of blobmington in the upstairs of the baker driving shed the baptist church on the eighth line or in the school house for instruction in sight singing how our singing in church services would be im proved now if someone like mr baker would spend his time and energy in the way he did for it surely must have been a joy to hear those four part harmonies raised in song tarfy parly but our desription of the so cial life would not be complete without telling you about the sugaring off parties in the woods those farmers like wa kockler watson fairies and others who made that delicious maple syrup and sugar were very generous in the welcome days of spring when their sup ply of these goodies had been acquired and the run of sap continued they would invite the neighbourhood young people to a taffy party in their woods the bright fire giving off that tangy aroma of burning wood caused the sweet sap to bubble and finally to produce the frag rant taffy or sugar games of hide and seek blind mans buff etc were played around the fire with many a tumble and shriek of laughter it did not matter how much wood was burned in the bonfire for were there not many tree limbs stand ing in huge piles ready to use for this very purpose as the moon looked down upon the scene what matter if he did see a couple here and there stray away from the bright fire for a stroll in the balmy spring air box socials one must not forget the hox socials these were held in the homes or in the school house each young lady would find a pretty box or basket decorate it beautifully with valentine s patrick or other suitable symbols then fill it with delec table goodies of all sorts put- ling her name inside now the part played by the young men at these socials was to come prepared to buy these boxes and to enjoy the contents with the lady whose name he found inside of course there must be an auctioneer to auction each box to the highest bidder afler an evening of games everyone breathlessly awaited the begin ning of the auction with much curiosity the boys tried to as certain which box helonged to the girl of his choice and who would say that the girl pome- times did not give him a bit of help but it was all so much fun that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening the mon ey raised was used for some good purpose these are only some of the highlights of social life in for mer days doubtless your par ents will tell you of many more of which we have not space to write certainly we cannot say that social life was dull or non existent in those days instead it was wholesome exhilarating and unbiased well deserving the term of the good old days cedar posts getting scarce cedar posts are becoming a hard item to obtain farmers are finding that it is not worth lite trouble to cut draw peel and deliver posts at the going rate this information came to light at last weeks victoria county load committee meeting about the only source of posts which at one time were obtained chief ly from farmers is now the re forest ation plantations the price is 60e a post york county forest at vivian produces thousands of posts but few are used by the road department victoria county councillors moved to use more steel posts in future since the cedar seemed to be going out of style in so far as production is concerned the steel is easier to install lasts longer and in the long run would be cheaper sunday school lesson cotilen text o give thanks unto the ixrd for he is good for his mercy enduretli for ever psalm 1361 t approach to the iesson j psalm 105 is an unsullied song of praise pure sunshine all the way through the theme is great is thy faithfulness o god our father the writer lets the light of that wonderful truth shine brightly on cods varied dealings with his own people with the nations and events involved in their history ch spurgeon states that this psalm was evidently written by king david that the first fif teen verses were sung at the carrying up of the ark from the house of obededom i chron 1671 certainly it would suit such an occasion admirably and indeed any season that gods people were celebrating with thanksgiving his watch ful care over them the last psalm 1041 spurgeon adds sang the opening chapters of genesis and this takes up its closing chapters and conducts us into exodus and numbers has psalm 105 a message per tinent for us today yes indeed as has all scripture god is un changing his faithfulness to his people his dealings with them in the past are both relia ble guides for us today jesus included the psalms in the scriptures that spoke of him his salvation and his commis sion to
