hardy annuals and halfhardy annuals the hardy annuals are grown from seed sown out of doors halfhardy annuals are sown indors in early spring and are trans planted outdoors when danger of frost is past some such as marigolds and zinnias are frost tender while others such as petunia and verbenas must be started indoors to give them the required length of growing sea son for bloom production the majority of halfhardy annuals may be sown from now onwards except the fast grow ers such as zinnias and cosmos which should be sown in late april or even early may sow different kinds in separate con tainers to make transplanting easy and efficient containers may be 6 seed pans or 5 pots the soil mixture should con tain 7 parts loam 3 parts peat and 2 parts sand add about 2 oz of superphosphate or a complete fertilizer such as 51015 to each bushel of mix ture if possible sift the mixture througli a vt inch sieve parti cularly for fine seeds sow the seed and cover light ly with the soil mixture water with a fine spray to avoid un covering the seeds they may also be watered by placing the pot two thirds of its depth in water until the soil surface darkens then remove to allow to drain to prevent evepora- tion cover the container with glass or plastic and shade from the sun however to provide enough light for good seedling growth remove the shading and covers when the first seedlings appear transplant the seedlings into flats when they have formed their first true leaves use the same soil mixture as mentioned above and space the transplants about 2 inches apart plenty of light is needed to keep seed lings short and sturdy the soil should neither be saturated nor allowed to dry out but keep in an evenly moist condition wat er early in the day so that foliage is dry before nightfall annuals should not be plant ed out until the danger of frost is past it is a good idea to set the flats of seedlings outside a week or more before planting out to acclimatize them gradu ally to outdoor conditions cov er at night with burlap if frost threatens the a cappella choir of mountain view bible college didbsury alberta will pre sent its program of sacred music this coming sunday
