the national employment service qshawa told a small but in terested audience at the home school council meeting on march 26ih at bayview heights school bay ridges also on the panel to discuss the employ ment situation and the reorgan ized high school curriculum were mrs k her t berg mr j tickle principal of bay view i lei g h t sch ool a nd m r w bodrug guidance counsellor at dunbarion high school the moderator was mrs t wheeler of pickering mr tickle agreed that he had noticed an increas ing quiet concern among the grade 8 students as they view their future in high school mr bodrug emphasized that every youngster entering high school who requests a guidance inter view will recetvp one and ever those who dont as time per mits will have a routine inter view this is resulting in more youngsters remaining in high school inder quest ion ning a- brtut iq and aptitude testing mr bodrug asserted the results of these tests are not a true enough indication of a childs ability to be used to channel ihem into high school streams these tests have to be used to gether with other judgements to form a more accurate esti mate of a pupils potential aim for 5 year course the streams of the new high school curriculum mr bodrug explained have been designed to provide a place for every youngster all capable and am bitious students should aim at the 5 year course in either arts science business com merce or trades technology as only these streams lead to further education even the 4th year of the 5 year courses will lead to rycrson and other pros pects the actual a year course in any of the three branches is terminal course designed for those who will be going right out to a job these 4 year cour ses do not lead to further edu cation hut do provide a good background for students enter ing the working world they tare especially designed for that large group of students who have in the past droppedout early mr v stetler principal of dunbanon high school who iwas in the audience remarked ithat only about 15- of those entering grade 9 have in the tpat completed grade 13 and that all potential dropouts be retained in school for instruc tion designed to meet the needs of the modern industrial world apprenticeship in canada is 50 years behind europe mr pin eau said there is a great ueed for a revision in this respect and industry is aware of it ca nada right now could use sev eral thousand more tool and die makers than there are but there is no apprenticeship rouie avail- iable to train canadian vouth in this skill kxtend family allowance when asked to comment on the reasons for young people dropping out of school mrs hertzherg mentioned the cost of keeping a child in school and suggested the continuation of the family allowance for child ren as long as they are in school would help in this respect it is also a matter of incentive it takes a good deal of encourage ment to keep a youngster at his l isten girlsplease lend an ear ive children to strive for higher goals it was pointed out that good teachers can do a great deal to inspire their pupils and such good teachers are invalu able there was a suggestion that society is changing and people are losing their will to serve for the sake of serving mr pineau called this problem mcietywide children accept as important x those things which their parents think irnportatu the employment senice does everything possible to encour age pupil to remain in school until completing their course as this is greatly to their advant age mr pineau said many chil dren leave anyway but of these some later realize their mistake and mr stetler said these can be readmitted to high school most of these have a decidedly improved attitude and perform ance it has even been possible on occasion lo fit schooling around a boys job in order to for instance improve his eng lish which might be necessary for the job he is doing dimuss minority group in grade 8 mr tickle remar ked it s already apparent the i students who wili not do well in high schol he railed atten- i tlon to the fact that when we speak of the pressure of society on the boys and girls we are speaking of their playmates the values of society for them are the values held by their playmates in this respect he had noticed a change of values taking effect where the well- behaved children were becom- 1 ing the outgroup and poor behaviour and bad language were becoming the mark of the ingroup from the audience came support for this conten tion as one patent agreed her child had said he had to use poor language at school or be laughed at there was general agreement that values were changing radically from those held when the panel members attended school under the influ ence perhaps of tv fare the acceptance of poor standards by the parents etc mr bodrug cut in to emphasize that the major ity of youngsters in high school were very worthwhile young adults and would do a good job in their turn at running the country he wanted to remind the panel that it was the smaller group of youngsters who were being discussed mr pineau fell it was a general blurring of val ues which was switching the in and the out groups and it was generally felt that lack of guidance and discipline on the part of the parents is re sponsible boys want cars boys frequently want cars even if it means leaving school to support one one parent com mented and asked the panel whether withholding licenses until age is would help keep boys in school 2 years longer mr stetler said that while boys may want cars to drive it was a ppa ren t from t he results of the high school course offered that these same boys were not interested in learning about the mechanics of a car if it turned out to be work mrs wheeler asked what the panel considered about the merits of well-round- edness mrs hertzberg said that children who are kept construc tively busy frequently have a better attitude to education and that when families do things to gether it makes for a closer re lationship which might give a child more encouragement to aim higher mr pineau com mented on the noticeable lack of wonder among the young peo ple looking for jobs they want to do just enough to get along he said if a keen ambitious youngster comes along it is a pleasant change indeed the fact that many parents seem frightened tends to make child ren securityminded rather than adventuresome lie said study high school program the panel agreed on the nec essity for children and parents to study the now high school program carefully being realis tic about their plans for the fu ture and having entered high school to stick with and com plete their chosen program it will give them the start they need to compete in the modern job market mrs j ricketts thanked the panel for a most interesting dis cussion refreshments provided by the varrghan willard assoc were served by mrs d loucks and mrs o oliphant and mrs b iaureysens of the bayview heights association mis j adamson the council president teminded those pres ent that the next council meet ing will be the annual dinner on may 21st at which dr koer- ber will speak on kducational
