pickering rural ratepayers meeting in broug ham on february 6th you neither flattered nor censured anything nor sided in any issue but reported the facts in brief that is the way to report news honestly and acccurately the small town newspaper and i say this with great deference to them have a ten dency to sneak in their heavy thumb in the news to the bene fit of one side against those not in agreement with them in so doing they may injudiciously injure a worthy cause to the benefit of a worthless one however you might have with good reason commented as to the scarborough association attitude towards us they not only boycotted our meeting but deliberately tried to sabotage it under the naive publicity that they did not want to hurt anybody and even tried to in fluence our speakers to refrain from attending it the rural ratepayers which i shall brief as we worked our heads off to bring two eminent cabinet ministers to discuss our problems of interest to all ratepayers whether farmer rural or urban the scarbo rough outfit which i shall brief as they set up to cover up their members ears and to blindfold them so that they would not have to hear what these notable cabinet ministers had to say while we wanted to clarify our respective position in com mon they tried like the dog in the manger to allow no one to hear us any intelligent person one would think would have been urged to attend that meet ing and investigate for himself but instead they set out to sabotage our meeting resorting to crude methods that have in fact done their cause injury and established ours higher than ever in the minds of fairminded and intelligent people we accomplished something patent and historical in less than two months the only thing they have accomplished is unnecessary division dis union and petty jealousies in our community we did not need a lawyer to spend our money but accom plished our purpose without costing any one else a dime we did not have to resort to under handed methods by having secret teteatete and chitchats with any reeve or member of the cabinet we presented our case in open discussion both in council and in public meetings with the cabinet ministers we advocat ed union solidarity and fair equity they personal interest at the expense of others we recommend to our mem hers not only to attend their meetings hut to join their asso ciation for unitys sake they instead boycott and sabotage us as though they had other designs than the interest of the taxpayer we have performed a service to all ratepayers with credit- ahle distinction surmounting all odds they counting outride forces township council sup port and all the press for bed fellows have accomplished noth ing xothi xg we represent a segment of ratepayers free from political interest they represent the censored politicians who have been for over 10 years increas ing our taxes in the rural and farming community giving us nothing that we did not have 10 years ago is it any wonrfer they did not want one to hear us your truly robert g roy whitby twp road superintendent resigns walks out of meeting whitby townships road him back telling him council feel superintendent merle ross walked oui of a brooklin coun cil meeting last week amid a blaze of questioning by reeve john goodwin and deputy- reeve john dryden regarding the roads department purchas ing policy when ross target of much criticism since his appointment in 1961 left the council cham ber he left behind him his resignation council on a unanimous re corded vote accepted the resig nation the performance by the road superintendent marks twice he has refused to answer quest ions and leave the council chamber since november at one of council two no vember meetings the former road superintendent refused to be crossexamined by deputy- reeve dryden and stomped out of the room in december he refused to enter the room because the press was represented good night gentlemen mr ross waved and said good night gentlemen im leaving was not finished with its report im finished good night gentlemen mr ross said and left the room clerk murray robinson who had received mr rosss resig nation from him during the argument followed him mr ross forgot to sign it insubordination deputyreeve dryden charged mr ross leaving the room was another example of in subordination by ross we had the same thing last year and i feel the public is entitled to know where its money is go ing the letter to council mr ross wrote during the argu ment read members of whit by township council i am hereby submitting my resigna tion and wish to be relieved of my duties as road superinten dent of the township of whit by he submitted it at 815 pm speaking of mr drydens motion of immediate accept ance councillor fred stureh councils junior member charg ed ross leaving the way he did was most inconsiderate t was astounded at the fact any man in public life reeve goodwin twice called i he walked out of the meeting i should be subjected to question ing regarding his job it takes a man to stand up to accusa tions and questions councillor stureh said suspended in 1961 councillor frank thompson the senior councillor pointed out mr ross was suspended from service in 1961 until an audit report failtd to prove the roads department funds were being misspent if it is the wish of the man to resign there is no sense in trying to keep him on councillor thompson said councillor dorald roberts said he was shocked but not entirely surprised when the road superintendent resigned but it is somethinj which has been in the wind he certainly has not been hounded up to the point he has beer in the past and this is the second time he has walked out ol a meeting if he has nothing 10 hide he should be man enough to stand up and fac6 it im not suggesting there is misappropri ation of public funds poor administration may cover it i can only agree to accept his resignation councillor rob erts said
