what older folks are talking about when tbej speak of a christmas of old what is an old- fashioned christmas certainly it is impossible for us to go back to tbe borse-and- buggy days wecant even get backto tbedays oftbemodelt we live in a modern world we bave modern transportation we bave modern conveniences in tbe old days sunday was dressup day and when folks went for a stroll or a surrey ride tbey donned tbeir sundaybest today we wear whatever we please take an hour or so to drive to a place where no one knows us or cares what we wear we cant go back to tbe old days so what can we do about christmas simply we can observe christmas in tbe traditional manner first we must remember that christmas is a religious holiday a day given to observance of tbe greatest event in tbe history of mankind tbe birtb of a redeemer let us keep christmas a religious holiday secondly let us keep christmas as a family observance christ- mas becomes more meaningful when families plan together make gifts together bave or engage in social affairs in which all family members bave a part bave a family worship service at borne and stress tbe religious aspects of christmas throughout ail tbe seasons activities many merry cbristmases may result from sucb a family tra dition parade hollywood boulevard becomes santa claus lane once a year as santa clans and his screen colony cohorts ride down the movie capitals main street in santas sleigh some 500000 spec tators annually view the parade farm from the ontario department of agriculture newmarket a a wall agricultural representative for york county i almost hesitate to mention the word corn these days be cause i have run into a few people who were a little suspici ous that i was getting some payola from the corn growers this suspicion is not unex pected because most of us in the department of agriculture are very high in our praise of corn both as a crop to grow and as a feed for livestock however corn is strong enough to stand on its own me rits without any dishonest promotion it will provide more food per acre than any other crop and for quality it also gets top rating i have been asked several times lately if its wise to buy shelled corn to feed the an swer is nearly always yes if shelled corn and oats are sell ing for about the same price corn with its higher nutrient content is a much better buy even corn and cob meal con tains just as much feed value pound for pound as oat chop one bushel of corn and cob meal is equal to two bushels of oat chop coin cobs are harder to store of course handle and grind than the small grains where enly small quantities of feed have to be purchased corn cobs have very little advantage but where the quantities are high special equipment for corn is well worth its cost high corn rations used to be considered very dangerous for dairy cows this has changed now and large quantities of corn are being fed on dairy farms with no trouble it is low in protein of course for milk ing animals but early cut hay with its high protein now off sets to quite an extent corns deficiency our yield tests on oat varie ties upset me a little this yeai because our highly rated new star let us down our plots showed russell oats in second place for yield behind rodney wit garry coming in third this has never happened before so im inclined to discount this one performance in the aver age yields for this zone of on tario russell still topped all ether varieties with a yield of 97 bushels per acre garry and rodney followed with yields of 88 and 84 bushels the barley varieties were very close with york again the winner the average yields in this zone were york 65 keystone g4 brant 62 and herta 62 both of the top yielders have a flaw though york is very susceptible to loose smut and keystone has very little resistance to mildew so of the four barleys listed the best one is the one you can get good quality seed for most easily w 0 jite wea overwhelmed wow seems to be the reaction
