acclamation there will be no election in the township of uxbridge at the nomination meeting on fri day evening norman hogg moved from deputyreeve up to the reeveship without opposi tion and the deputyreeveship was filled by alvin redshaw also uncontested donald jack son and charles forsyth were returned as councillors and arthur knight will fill the va cancy nominations were also made for grant hill and grant drew- cry but since neither man was present nor had given written consent both were ineligible reeve reviews year reeve earl dowswell who was also warden of ontario county in 1962 addressed the ratepayers gathering of some eightyfive persons and touched mainly on the two large road department expenditures made this year a new grader had been puchased from the j d adams company at cost of 23835 and the purchase of a gravel pit at 14000 he said that the purchase of gravel from private sources had been unsatisfactory and council had received the consent of the de partment of highways to buy a pit as well as the consent of the ontario municipal board to issue the necessary deben tures he told the audience that the centre rd north of uxbridge had been surveyed and the own ers contacted from whom it was necessary to buy frontage no actual work of widening had been done to date the township wolf bounty had been increased by 15 but had only been called on to make two payments favoured deer season norman hogg the newly acclaimed reeve said that a county vote on an open deer season in ontario had been turned down although he him self had favoured the action deer were becoming very plen tiful in ontario county and there had been complaints of crop damage he said that the agricultural committee of which he was a member had expended a budget of some 10000 on fall fair grants agricultural prizes and grants to farmers establishing farm ponds would enforce bylaws alvin redshaw who will be deputyreeve in 1963 said that more stringent action should be taken in the protection of live stock he said the town ship paid claims of 277 in 1961 but in 1962 the amount soared to 1450 fire costs too he said had climbed from 2762 in 1961 to 3624 in 1962 councillor charles forsyth recommended that township records needed more protection and thought a vault should be provided he also thought fire extinguishers should be pro vided on other township proper ty councillor donald jackson defended councils action in not accepting the lowest bid for the new road grader he said the one purchased was more suit able to the township require ments charges red infiltration in pickering township there is a communist cell in pickering township this statement lacking in both fact and foundation caught mem bers of council by complete surprise at a regular meeting in brougham on monday night mr frank thraelkeld riverside drive charged that a council lors association with any com munist element could lead to questions prior to the municipal elections in december 1963 there is a very strong feeling against this element he said the members received the in formation with mixed emo tions mr thraelkelds main source of information appeared to come from a letter that was published recfently in a local weekly newspaper if any member of council wishes to support these people i dont want to support him at the polls he continued thats your privilege said reeve scott you may vote for whoever you wish i think these people have a right to their opinion its something were up against all the time continued tlic ratepayer all the symp toms are here he could not pinpoint the location of the headquarters for the commu nist regime in pickering reeve scott thanked the speaker for bringing the mat ter to the attention of the coun cil i am sure that each mem ber will govern himself accord ingly he said water pipe from 7 th con stream concern of farm deputation audley mrs fred puckrin a white gift service will be held during the sunday school session this children who will have their own party in the basement with mrs ron cox in charge a pipe tunneled under the 7th concession of pickering is taxing the supply of water in a neighbourhood stream and is causing some concern among a group of farm residents in the srea on monday night a dele gation headed by mr russell gostick asked the advice of the township council in solving the problem he suggested that either the township should take action and return the creek to its original watercourse inside the boundary line of the proper ty of mr alex gray or give the deputation permission to move it mr gostick informed the council that the stream had been dry throughout much of the summer he noted that one resident was using large quanti ties of water and had installed a pressure pump last spring it was suggested that the water was being used in a private swimming pool councillor harvey spang fa voured some type of action that would put the stream back in its original location he con tended that in time it would prove a threat to the townships road not council mutter it seems to me that if we take any stand at all we would be taking sides in a dispute that is actually a problem between two propertyowners said government municipal and corporation bonds preferred and common shares inquiries invited russell beare 213 main street markham phone 2941523 subagtnt of wood gundy company limited councillor milton mowbray i dont think we need concern ourselves with the matter councillor mowbray pointed out that he could readily sym pathize with the farmers for their concern but he did not feel that the municipality should leave itself open to court action what happens if our road is damaged questioned council lor harvey spang we would then take steps to protect it answered mr mowbray councillor mowbray contend ed that the municipality had no proof that the party in ques tion had no legal right to take the water from the stream it was admitted that the pipe had been laid under the road some fifteen years ago when a for mer township reeve had acqui sition to the property if we move the stream we are taking the water away from a man who is now using it continued mr mowbray we would then have to extend the pipe he may have a legal right to use the water no one seems to know said mr gostick it is a matter of private rights and the only way it can be settled is in the courts said councillor mowbray not concerned reeve sherman scott noted that whatever action the delega tion wished to take would not be the concern of the council it is between yourselves and the other party he said mr gostick said that the stream skirted the road allow ance for a distance of about 300 feet he suggested that it would cost about 200 to re turn it to its former location this is a legal problem and the municipality should not be come involved agreed council lor w j greening pickering tp population over 20000 the population in the town ship of pickering has soared to 20652 this is an
