claremont residents in 1902 through the determined efforts of a local doctor the bell telephone company of canada was extending its telephone line from stouffville to claremont and from broug ham to claremont to link this community with its main long distance netwoi k throughout ontario and quebec dr v f eastwood made an arrangement to use about a mile of the bells poles fiom the junction of this line with his own private line in the direction of goodwood he wanted to accommodate a subscriber who was assisting him in his telephone business soon afterwards dr darling cf goodwood erected a rival system while dr ralph brodie and his brother charles a vete rinary surgeon built still an other private line out of clare mont by marcli 1903 when the eastern ontaiio telephone di- icctory made its proud appear ance claremont was listed as a long distance office with dr eastwood as local manager four years later on novem ber 13 1906 dr ralph brodie accepted managership of local telephone affairs and claie- mont residents could make or leceive calls from the houts of 8 am to s pm on weekdays 2 to 4 pm on sundays and from 10 to 12 am and 2 to 4 pm on holidays customeis of the growing bethesda and stouffville tele phone company were now able to contact the brodie tele phone system at claiemont through the line of the tele phone association in altona which had recently been con nected with the bethesda and stouffville switchboard like many other independent companies the bethesda and stouffville system came into be ing to provide telephone con nections for isolated lesidents and rural folk with their princ iple business centre under the capable leadership of a d bruce miller bethesda and stouffville was formed during the summer of 1904 and a year later on september 18 received its charter as a joint stock company by the approach of the 1920s feminine thoughts turned to bobbed hair and large brimmed hats while men on the other hand entered into discussions about the league of nations or the high cost of living be thesda and stouffville was now operating the claremont tele phone exchange in the formative eais after the turn of the century another company became known in in dependent telephone circles originally called the markham and pickering telephone com pany it was later teorganked as the home company the bell pui chased a control ling interest in the home tele phone company which was eventually taken over by the woodbridge and vaughan tele phone company on january 1 1940 ten years later at the close of business december 4 1950 the bell assumed responsibility for the entire woodbridge and vaughan system including its 193 claiemont customers mrs g conner became local repre sentative an agieement was soon leached between the bell and the bethesda and stouffville stouffville company in an ef fort to improve telephone serv ice in this legion in a letter to customers at the time the bell pointed out that since the pur chase of woodbridge and vaug han it has been appaient that the territory could be better served by one telephone ex change rather than two as in the past theiefore on march 4 1952 the bethesda and stouffville company became responsible for all the bells lines and equip ment in the claiemont area while in return the bell took over all bethesda and stouff- villes telephone facilities in the richmond hill and aurora sec tions eight years later the bell entered claremont once again when it pin chased the entire bethesda and stouffville sys tem in may 1960 still another change is about to take place in claiemonts
