timber wolves attack reach township farmer north york winner floyd forsyth of stouff ville a perennial winner in local plowing match competi tions was able to get in urne good preinternational pract ice on friday when he com pleted two good lands in the north york match near holt early history of claremont baptist church and of the womens mission circle audley mrs fred puckrin rev m buttars delivered the thanksgiving message and also administered the sacrament of the lords supper on sunday oct 7th the community club met at the home of bill and mrs guth rie on saturday evening oct 6 sympathy of the community if extended to the guthrie fam ilies on the passing of mr dick by viola forsyth as given on the 75th annivers ary of wmc and 141st anni versary of the church the early church history was obtained largely from mr w k woods past years in pick ering published in 1911 mr woods a former presbyterian minister in claremont travel led all over pickering twp by horse and buggy lent to him by mrs g m forsyth and vis ited all the old families to get material for his book mrs dan iel forsyth was able to tell him much about our church in the early days then too mr woods procured some of the first min utes and some of these are dup licated in his book two brothers joshua and joseph vixson came to the northern part of pickering now know as claremont to wards the close of the 18th cen tury from new york this was long before is was called clare mont long before it had a name at all and before there was a township of pickering for we were then a part of york the ancestors of these two brothers had come from england in 1684 and settled first in mass usa later mov ing to new york state both brothers were already married when they came to ca nada i do not know whether joseph had any children at the time or not but it is known that joshua had at least one child a boy of 6 years of age named amos the country was mostly bush- land in the late seventeen hun dreds but joseph took up land on the west side of the brock road and built a house just north of where the road deviat es to the east on the way to the cpr station and near the home of mr and mrs wearn and also not far from the big old elm across from the proper- belonging to miss mabel gibson if you were to cross to the west side of the brock road and examine the lower part of the trunk you would see a plaque which reads the wicksons historic tree this is a vvtong spcling of wixson and is also spelled wrongly in mr woods book he has spelled it wixon mrs harry porter has the original deed of her proper ty signed by two of the wix- sens proving wixson to be the correct spelling joseph owned a- strip of land from his house south of the eighth con cession joshua likewise owned a strip of land on the cast side cf the brock rd and built his home se of where the cpr i station stands a little east of the back end of the property now owned by mr earl mcmul len which would be on the land formerly owned by g m fpr- syth and now occupied by mr edgar ward joshua later mov ed to the 7th concession and built a new house west of the brock rd the wixsons were baptists and the nearest baptist church was in markham the minister was elder barclay a familiar name in pickering twp the wixsons attended this church until they were excluded in 1621 it seemed joshua his wife rachel and son amos angered elder barclay when they op posed him being paid a salary because they believed it to be an unscriptual practice saying an hireling careth not for the sheep because he is an hireling ard not the owner of the sheep i dont know what they proved by that quotation and apparently neither did elder barclay jthe wixsons were branded as ignorant persons joshua was also expelled for what elder barclay called heresy when he pleaded for an excommunicated member after that one had confessed his wrong when the final day of sever ance came sixteen other mem bers were also expelled among them joseph wixson family and the reason for their expulsion being their failure to speak out in condemnation of the joshua wixsons for their stand this little band of about 20 people were now without a place of worship so they began to meet in the homes meeting most often perhaps in the home of joshua wixson now living on the 7th concession joshua now became the first spiritual lead er of this little group of bap tists serving not as an or dained pastor but as a lay preacher and he became known as elder wixson and im stirc without remuneration he couldnt possibly have taker any pay after his stand re garding a salary for elder barclay joshuas daughter ruth who had been the first white child born in n pickering became the first church clerk and some of hermlnutes are to be found in past years in pickering these minutes mention joshua was given permission to bap tize in queen st or elsewhere so these are the beginnings of our claremont baptist church and the first christian church lr pickering twp if your men tal arithmetic is good and you add 1821 plus 141 you get 1962 early in the 1830s a baptist church was organized on the 6th concession and about the same time perhaps just a bit later another on the 7th con cession called the gostick church the wixson baptist had no thought for a church edifice until 1850 when they bought 1 acres of land from joseph wix son jr on the 9th concession a wooden structure was built and completed in the fall of 1851 our present church was erected in 1864 and completed in 1865 i am referring only to the church proper the brick part the ss at the back is much older being the old church on the 7th concession and moved to its present location in 1870 the 7th concession baptist amalgamated with claremont and that is when the gosticks and the tracys came to our church and now a bit about our mission circle when mr a v timpany re turned to canada on his first furlough after 10 difficult years of pioneer missionary work in india he began enlisting the sympathy of the cnd women for the women and children of india in 1876 a meeting was held in the jarvis street bap tist church in toronto and out of that meeting was born the first bap- list mission circle in ont que bec having organized 2 weeks earlier the missionary socie ties spread throughout ontario and quebec but claremont church didnt have a circle un til approximately 10 years later there is some doubt about whether our circle was organ ized in 1886 or 1887 on march 14 1886 it was organized by mrs dadson the wife of the then incumbent minister unfortunately the minutes of the first 10 years were burned in the forsyth fire in 1918 and so when the circle celebrated their 50th anniversary there were no records of the earliest days but some of the chartered members were still living and they were able to recall some of the important facts i dont know how many chart ered members were living at the 50th birthday but only one was living at the time of the diamond jubilee mrs john morgan who just passed away last june in her 91th year had we celebrated our 75h anni versary she still would have been living though unable to be present due to her advanced continued en page 10 thomas carter a reach twp farmer living east of the town of uxbridge said that he was recently attacked by wolves while harrowing a back field near a wooded swamp area what he thought first was a deer in the dust made by his machine turned out to be a large gray timber wolf he said the wolf crouched and sprang at the tractor as he drew closer the hind feet of the animal touched the ground while the forepaws rested on the hood the open mouth show ing strong sharp fangs mr carter said he steered the tractor into the bush and against a tree which brushed the animal off and it retreated into the woods the tractor stalled and the uneasy farmer was obliged to climb from it to unhitch the harrows to release it from the tree after a careful scrutiny of the bush he resumed his harrowing scveial moie lound bi ought him to the edge of the swamp again and tluee diffeicnt wolves emeiged heading to- waids the ti actor this time the faimcr made a hasty retieat over the ploughed field to the lane whcie dr catl putci bough a neighbour and an uxbridge dcntist was duving in on his ti actor to pay him a visit mr carter raced to the house for his gun and the two men with carters son hugh drove in a car to the tractor wheie the wolves were still cii cling when they were caught in the bright ring of the car lights they disappeared into the swamp could be rabid two of the wolves mr car ter said were large timber wolves and the thiid was a led- hued bush wolf he stated that he believed the animals to be rabid since their attack and their method of attack was not the customary action of wolves the next day about 15 hunt ers and their dogs scourged the swamp and they could find no sign of the animals mr caiter believes the pack was just passing through cattle on a neighboring farm are presently quarantined for rabies the carters say that this is not the first time wild animals have been heard or seen on the pioperty at night the scream of the wildcat is often heard and tracks through the bush they said could be those of a moose is of green river sorry to hear that mr j davies is not too well little debbie woolhead suffering from an attack tonsilitis mr l roberts was missed
