tf 2 the stouffyltte tribune tfaoeby m editorial a worthwhile effort one of the first moves in the resent program by the stouffville home school association to- put on a safety campaign particularly now that school is out came last thursday when constable harry heatherington was invited to speak to the children of both public schools pn the subject of safety like sev eral of the constables we have had in the past such as officer hilliard of the opp and chief edwards con stable heatherington is interested in young people and is blessed with the technique of getting along with them and being able to present to them a program of this kind more than seven hundred child ren listened to the constable impress the various aspects of safety and they showered him with questions following the talk he took some time to give them various tips on water safety to tell them that side walks were out of bounds for bicycles and to walk across intersections he cautioned them about playing on the roadways and asked that any old iceboxes sitting about should be reported so that the doors could be removed as part of the program it is planned to have mr beep who operates jointly with the safety ele phant come here in august further constable heatherington announced that a crusader bicycle club would be established in the fall safety is something which re quires a continual program of work in order to keep the children alert to the dangers at all times not too many of our citizens are willing to give the time or have the knack of giving the children confidence and gaining their interest we would commend the local constable for his energies along this line and would urge that the program be given every assistance possible action long overdue at a regular meeting of whit- thurch twp council last week the ontario water resources commis sion was criticized for its slow to action program in dealing with a refuse problem on the second con cession we would not be so hasty in pointing an accusing finger at the owrc because as we recall this matter has been sitting in the lap of the council for almost three years and to our knowledge no positive action has been taken by the muni cipality to correct it when the subject was first brought to light many monthts ago we suggested that the good neighbor policy was being stretched too far in permitting an industry in aurora to deposit sludge materials on adjoin ing lands across its horder it may be that the receipt of a 26name petition from district home owners has once again started the pot to boil we still contend that the fire of action should come from the local administration instead of prolonging the agonyby passing the buck on to a foreign body surely the whitchurch twp council has the power to halt this practice its time the members took off their kidgloves and bared their knuckles against an invasion on pri vate and municipal rights a point well taken there has been some speculation that the next federal election might be or at least should be called with a shorter campaign period the exeter timesadvocate calls for a little more consideration before such a move is advocated it asks that one consider the position of soine of the candidates if the campaign period was shortened primarily those who challenge the man who has been sitting as a mem ber of parliament the sitting member has had possibly four years to establish his acquaintance throughout his riding he has come in contact with hund reds of families in the riding the challenger on the other hand is under a considerable handicap in the space of about six weeks he must 1 win a nominating convention 2 arrange his personal affairs to permit him to run for the seat t 3 make arrangement for all elements of his campaign 4 try to become known throughout the riding which in our own case encompasses a good many municipalities consider the electioneering in all these municipalities alone even if the candidate spent a short time in each town and township he could not cover his whole constituency we agree that i or the challeng ers to wage a campaign in any shorter time than six weeks is im possible for that reason alone the length of federal elections cannot be shortened j what about this flag business we are on- the eve of another dominion day a time when in years past we all got out our union jacks put them in front of our business places and on our homes and felt a real pride in doing so today out side of the larger centres not too t many flags are in evidence and we dont think its because we dont any longer care for the flag we were fly ing twenty years ago compare this with our friends across the border and youll see quite a contrast here the american flag is very much in evidence not only on special occasions such as national holidays but at all times it would boil down to this that if we do not propose to takp any more interest in flying a suggested new flag than we show in flying the one we already have the hullabaloo over a change is a little shallow as far as we are concerned we already have a flag the canadian bed ensign and it was officially pro claimed as such by the governor- general in 1945 one could further substantiate this contention by draw ing attention to the fact that immi grants to canada are provided with a copy of the canadian red ensign and its description as the canadian flag undoubtedly some of the agi tation to toss out what has been officially declared by the government stems from the many thousands of foreign born people now in our midst and who are easily stirred up by agi tators to these may be added the ageold attempt by many in what is lightly referred to as the republic of quebec to completely clean house of anything with the slightest tinge of british background we are quite satisfied with the canadian ensign as a national sym bol and it does have the merit of being used more widely in canada than any other flag the inclusion of the union jack signifies canadas association with other members of the british commonwealth of na tions the coat of arms bears the emblems of all four countries from which our original settlers came to gether with the maple leaves the special emblem of canada this flag is flown from all public buildings of the dominion and provincial gov ernments in a recent election campaign speech prime minister diefenbaker made a pitch to the quebecers by proposing a national conference on the subject we dont believe there is any flag issue and the only steps the government should take is to stop our national emblem from being tossed about as a political issue lje jtcufhrill irtbmu stabushso iso a v nolan son publishers member of the canadian weekly newspaper association and the ontario smiiey rasmsl jt coming up dead ahead is just about the biggest weekend of the year for canadians it other weekend oncmfwyshrdlu has an exhilaration that no other weekend on our calendar produces hearts are light and gay because its the real advent of summer according to an old supersti tion summer actually begine on june 21 but try to tell that to a school teacher glassyeyed in a miasma of chalk dust and warm running shoes as she la bors through the last week of classes with children whose minds and hearts have fled the classroom to the great green throbbing outdoors m try to tell it to the tourist operator whose cabins are as empty as his cash register whose boats squat on the shore like so many gutted crocodiles whose dining room echoes only to the lone tread of his wife as she limps in from the kitchen to see if theres any point in preparing dinner for nonexist ent guests nope summer begins on the last weekend in june and we might as well resign ourselves to it thats when the hordes of urchins pour forth in an exuber ant tidal wave from their schools fifiled with a bursting sensation of freedom which will last about 48 hours thats when the factory work er who has spent 11v4 months putting round pegs in squaie holqs or something of the sort sets off quivering with life for his two weeks withpay ready to half kill himself golf ing swimming drinking beer dancing or whatever is his pleasure before crawling back spent but content to the shriek ing monotony of his job m thats when mothers who have spent the past 10 months crawling out of bed to find clean socks and blouses to totter about the kitchen making toast with peanut butter and jam have a new spring in their step an unaccustomed smile intheir hearts theirs is the deep inner warmth that comes from the knowledge that for the next two months theyll get meals when they damwell feel like it and do the washing ditto for the bass fisherman a breed as peculiar in his way as the deer hunter this is the big week end of the year it means the beginning of two beautiful months in which he can bake to a crisp in an open boat lash various bodies of water with miscellaneous hardware and drink skunky beer to his hearts content sheer joy for the tension taut young executive too its a special weekend family settled in at the cottage he leaves sunday night with protestations that its gonna be awfully loneiy without you guys and as drives down the highway back to the city his heart is light as angel cake as he contemplates those long lovely summer eve nings with maybe a drink and dinner in a pleasant restaurant before going home to that beau tiful peaceful peopleless house and of course for everyone this weekend has a special sig nificance because looming l up right in the middle of it is that glorious celebration of canadas national holiday the first of july or as we used to call it in simpler days dominion day m m what canadian is not thrilled to the mairow by the knowledge that the first of july is just around the corner with its wild bacchanalian revelry its flag rant expression of a highly emo tional people5s deepest feel ings dancing in the streets wine flowing like maple syrup
