coroners jury recommends bicycles be lighted at night gormley news a coroners jury in whitby last week was told that neither headlight in a truck which mruck a boy on a bicycle near kinsale three weeks ago had been installed properly the ju ry was inquiring into the death of william thomas mitchell 13 of rr 1 brooklin on may 12 the jury found that the boy had died when the bicycle he had been riding on highway 7 onehalf mile west of kinsale at 9 pm had been struck by the panel truck they recommended that all bicycles have the proper light ing installed when used at night and that all drivers use eery precaution when approaching or passing children either walking or riding a bicycle karl thomas bowen 39 of withrow avenue toronto told coroner dr j o ruddy and the fiveman jury that he had been on his way from janetvllle to brampton that evening he said that the right headlight beam was narrower than usual but he rather favored it because it lighted up the right side of the road better than usual the headlamps he said had been installed earlier this year by a garage in toronto saw boy he said that he was pioceed- lng west on highway 7 past kinsale when he saw a shadow sort of weaving on the west bound lane ahead of him about 5 yard away from the form he said he saw that it was a boy on a bicycle he said that the boy was zig zagging along using about three quarters of his lane bowen said that he pulled his truck to the left or eastbound lane to pass the boy but when he was about 10 feet from him the boy suddenly cut in front of him and he struck him he said that his windshield was broken by the impact and he lost control of his truck which grazed a number of posts before coming to a halt edward russell green of the salem road pickering town ship said that he and his wife had also been proceeding west on highway 7 that night and near brooklin a panel truck sim ilar to the one bowen was driv ing had passed him he said that he noticed then that the right headlamp shone too far to the right lights wrong floyd pilkey brooklin mech anic said that he had examined the truck later and found that neither headlamp was installed propei ly the right headlamp he said was installed with the top point ing towards the centre of the truck or in a horizontal position the left headlamp he said had been installed upside down because of this installation he said the left lamp would shine at a 30 degree angle into the sky on the low beam and the right headlamp would shine at a 30 degree angle into the ditch on low beam both he and pc harold hock- ins also a qualified mechanic stated that the lights could not give the full amount of light on either beam pc hockins who had investi gated the accident said that the boys bicycle had no lights but had a regulation red reflector on the rear fender dr r m clarke pathologist said the boy had died within a few minutes after the crash from shock multiple compound fractures and lacerations on way home thomas walter mitchell the boys father said that his son had been coming home from a friends home on the seventh concession when the accident occurred he said that his hoy had often made the tiip of a little more than a mile the acci dent occurred about a quarter mile from his home the jury retiied at 9 30 pm and returned their verdict of accidental death at 1048 pm crown attorney bruce af fleck
