to york presbytery of the united church of canada meeting in queensville on tues day feb 27 the rev dr a e mackenzie superintendent of home missions described the difficulties facing churches in the downtown areas of toronto he stated most people have no idea of the work that is being done and asked churches out- tide the city to lend their sup port to this type of work the pressures and distrac tions of the inner city are in tense dr mackenzie said and the frustrations keen there is need for greater understanding and assistance with what is be ing done dr mackenzie declar ed that one of the areas of life most underestimated by the church in recent years is that of crime particularly juvenile crime and pointed out the diffi culties encountered in dealing with juveniles having a criminal record in certain areas the atti tude expressed by children eight and nine years old is i would nt be found dead in sunday school dr mackenzie told the court the united church had estab lished a single unified clothing centre in the downtown area to which a number of individual churches directed people in reed the representatives of york presbytery indicated they would participate in sending clothing to the centre dr mac kenzie also alluded to the wel fare industries section of the fred victor mission where clo thing is taken in repaired and resold at a very low price reporting on behalf
