dr gordon thomas speaks to lemonville congregation marion th lemonville church honoured on sunday evening to have as their guest dr gordon thomas superintendent and chief turgeon ot the grenfell mission with headquarters at sl anthony newfoundland he spoke briefly on the be ginning of this mission relating how dr wilfred grenfell a brilliant medical doctor in lon don kngland was very much impressed one evening by a stirring sermon delivered by j l moodie grenfell became keenly aware of the great need for a doctor among the indian jlskimoes and fishermen and their families along the banks and inland of newfoundland nd labrador he sailed from england in 1892 with a crew of five and a small eaihe setting ip his headquarters at st an- ihony thus the beginning of a great mission to alleviate the suffering of these forgotten peo ple dr thomas ha been with the mission since 1947 and is pres ently spending some time at the toronto general hospital in the cardiovascular ward obseiving pnd studying the various tech niques of heart surgery hoping to return to st anthony in the very near future to set up a heatt clinic on the mission dr thomas showed a series of slides giving a rommentaiy on his woik much of their tia- el in the past has been done by og sled and boat but recently there ha been a change to air- piane they have a beaver and an otter in operation at the present time mixing their contacts so much eaier and faster the mission headquaiteis is at st anthony nfld wheie there is a hospital school dor mitory orphanage and farm op eration the community is near ly selfsufficient at cartwright jabrador and on belle island there is also a hospital school and doimitor besides lhey op erate 13 outposts staffed with registered nurses and seveial aids there is a unique tele phone radio communication system connecting all pot- the farm at st anthony em ploys fhe men they milk 20 cous have pigs and poultiy they must have all the hay shipped in because the growing season is so shoit there is just enough hay for pasture and much of the land is not suitable for cultivation there is a green house where many thousands of cabbage plants are staited and then distiibuted to the nat ives for gardening the chief vegetables grown aie potatoes cat rots and cabbage the sum mer season is short but eiy pleasant and warm with long days while it lasts the hospital and out post em ploys about 40 nurses and doc tors and several aids each ear an eje specialist xiom new- york volunteers a month of service to treat patients at the mission much of
