to give the county as sessor access to examine all local municipal assessment worksheets and records pertin ent to the returning of a proper equalization the move was made by coun cil to bring about a greater uni formity in the present method of county assessing it was not made because some of the as- sessors in the county had ro- fused to show their records to the county assessor g d hep- ditch although he did state that in the past he had some difficul ty in gaining access to the work sheets of whitby ajax and pic kering township mr hepditch stated that coun cil had no control over the rec ords of the assessors for the municipalities in ontario coun ty unless the law was changed tile assessment rolls were the property of the assessors he poimed out in suggesting that council make proper legislation to give him legal access to the records the county assessor said that he only wished to gain access to the records and not take them away this would only inter fere with the functioning of their offices he said the only weapon a county assessor has is to appeal assess ments he said and this is costly and creates bad feelings the job is hard enough without creating bad public relations he added i must have this background information to work with he said we could have a better equalization in the county if i had full access to these rec ords mr hepditch pointed out he had not been refused in any municipality to see the assess ment worksheets but claimed that unless the proper legisla tion was implemented the as sessors in the county could leg ally refuse reeve everett quantrili of whitby said that if the county assessor had access to the rec ords they could get misplaced and their absence could be cost ly to the municipality concerned reeve sherman scott request ed that the term access be defined does this mean that the county assessor can take the records away he asked with this problem of defini tion on hand the committee ad journed for 15 minutes to define the word access and review the recommendation the committees answer was that the county assessor could gain access to the records which according to an assessment dic tionary meant examine the clause in the recommendation was amended to read access to examine reeve scott was con vinced by the committee that the county assessor could not take the records away and the rec ommendation was finally adopt ed
