fjt 2 the stourtviui trj8une vmnity deuaber 28 1961 awaiting the missiletoe kiss the year has been good to us again the season has come when it is customary to put aside care and make merry we in canada are able to do this each year and to enjoy a wonderful christmastime which we have just passed through next weekend we will make merry again to mark the xew year season we in stouffville merchants and private citizens alike have good rea son to enjoy the season to the fullest while we do this let us remember the religious festival of deep significance it is a time to thank god for the manifold blessings bestowed upon us we should be especially thankful when we look about us at the rest of the world we still have our price less freedom without which none of us would be truly happy our free dom is unbounded save when it tres passes on the rights of others we wish one and all our readers a happy new year need another moses what this country needs is a moses to lead the government away from inflicting on the people the maze of tax labour forms statistical forms insurance forms hospital forms sales tax forms and a host of information forms that today are bending down the existence of small business we noted the other day that in rebellion against the great piles of forms and information that businesses are col lecting some have taken to the pro cess of filing the big mountain of printed matter in the waste basket within the next month we will be required to report to census of industry on how many envelopes we licked during 1961 how many sheets of flat paper we used how much oil we burned hydro and gas of course we have no record so we are forced to make a wild guess going into ottawa each year are hundreds of thousands of similar guesses while hundreds of clerks are paid good sal aries to tabulate such form3 farmers in the district will soon be bending over income tax forms and many of them have said if they would only tax us 200 or 300 and be done with it how thankful id be but the great round of paper work goes on increasing each year and likewise the number of civil ser vants to handle it and what of the taxpayers they not only have to put up with the constant nuisance of the whole mess but they have to pay for the people who send it out and receive the returns will we ever have a moses who can lead us away from this government interference with business more safety belts one notices more and more safe ty belts being installed in todays automobiles safety officials are pressing the public on every hand to install them and make use of them they are commonplace in air craft and there is evidence to prove that fatalities in motor accidents might be cut by as much as one third if seat belts were in general use their function is to prevent drivers from being thrown against the dash windshield or steering wheel or even out of the vehicle seat belts we realize are not the whole answer an effective safety campaign would be one that prevent ed most serious accidents from occur ring at all but there is the type of driver who can neither be taught nor reasoned with the safety of tha general public is the overriding in terest which demands that thesa reckless people be ruled off the road country colours it wasnt too many years ago that the bright lights of christmas wer confined almost entirely to the homes and thoroughfares of our big cities within the past decade the trend has spread to outlying towns villages and hamlets stouffville streets are vivid examples of this multicoloured magic not to be out done by the townsfolk our country neighbours have dressed up their rural residences in christmas finery here the effect is even more eye catching than in the urban centres the dreary landscape now sparkles with a lighted tree in almost every window and some have extended their christmas colours to include outdoor fixtures it is indeed a pleasant break to an otherwise bleak middecember bootleggers beware a number of police departments in the district have declared allout war on area bootleggers a number have already been brought before the courts and heavy fines have been handed out where convictions have been registered we have felt in the past that the presentence procedure of the accus ed has in some cases been treated as one hilarious joke it would appear to be no laughing matter as far as the police are concerned however and an even stiffcr crackdown on illegal liquor sales has been suggested why are the police and magis trates so concerned about such offens es we feel that for the most part they are concerned over the type of patrons such a business can attract meaning young people under the age of 21 years we have noted that this teenage clientele are familiar as foundins in such premises their fines may be only pinmoney but for the retailer the cost of living under such conditions can be most imprac tical and financially unsound on vhe farm wtrant a a wall agricultural hep i have been busy for the last few weeks calling on 30 young farmers in york county who re members of the farm man agement association the farm management work was started a year ago and the members have all kept farm accounts this year my visits were to sec how these accounts were going and to help out where necessary keeping farm accounts is one of those jobs that often start off well but get bogged down and forgotten in a busy time knowing this i was surprised to find everyone in the associa tion had their accounts pretty well uptodate these men were all able to work out some simple nystem for keeping their rec ords if they could do it i am aurc that a great many more farmers could keep good ac counts and these records can be a real help in running a farm business well the hardest part is to set up inventories but if this is done once its a very simple job to keep it going year after year most farmers keep some kind of records but not many keep in ventories a list of expenses and receipts may be allright for income tax but with an inven tory of livestock machinery and feed the accounts can be put to a lot better use for mak ing the right decisions our ontario farm account book is a good one for both kinds of records its free and can be had by dropping a note to our office at newmarket or one can be picked up there the start of the year is by far tha best time to start keeping rec ords and we hope to hear from large numbers of farmers want ing an account book the big meeting for the crop improvement association is coming up early in january wednesday january 10th is the date and it will be held at the newmarket town hall as us ual the main speakers for the meeting will be professor t h lane oil specialist from oac harold clapp farm manager from king and dr d g hamil ton from ottawa dr hamilton has just returned from a farm tour in europe and russia and with vorld affairs so much in the limelight we are looking forward to his appraisal of world agriculture sugar eshehrrj spice i by bill smiley esesbs i hope you had a nice christ mas we did we always do we pile in on the grandparents each year and its always warm and cosy and pleasant at the farm and the women talk six miles a minute as they get the dinner and there are kids of all shapes sizes and ages and the men loaf shamelessly digestive juic es spurting into iheir cheeks as the scent of turkey and plum pudding waft in i hope you had a good year in 1961 its rathen depressing to look back over the year isnt it all those muddy footprints marking what started as a clean sheet i cant identify any particular progress moral phy sical or financial as i peer back through my own 12month stint i did get to church more often but that was offset by various other venalities i didnt have any major illness but i aged about eight years during the 52 weeks this happens every year which now makes me about 104 and i ended 1961 just as i start ed it up to my ears in debt happily the rest of the fam ily did show some progress the kids did fairly well in school and with their music grew a foot each and beat me for a small increase in allowance on the debit side they figured out numerous new ways of pushing their parents closer to the brink and the cost of clothing and feeding them leapt astronomic ally my wife had a good year loo for some reason she decided to stop pushing me and began pulling me i didnt move any faster but we were both more comfortable in the harness she also showed other signs of mel lowing only twice that i re call did she belt me a good one this is a new low i staggered through my fust year of teaching school and found it challenging frustrat ing exhausting and fascinating at various times i think ill be a reasonable teacher in another 12 years if the boys in the white coats dont get me first we increased the complexity of our domestic life by acquir ing a virginallooking kitten who promptly went out and got her self in the family way and a crazy cocker spaniel who at this moment tied up in the base- mcnl is yelping in piercing fa shion informing all and sundry that this is a hell of a way to treat one of the family during the year i learned lo curl and my wife learned to play hie organ t found some new fishing holes as a family we explored the new district wed moved to and had some fine cookouts swims picnics we moved into a big square house with lots of oak rccs closet space black squirrels and a fire place all welcome additions best party i was at all year was just before christmas when a gang of old fighter pil ots got together in the city and had a real oldtime bash aus tralians englishmen irishmen and canadians we reflew our spitfires mustangs and ty phoons with such gusto that the staid old club at which we ren dezvoused was rocking on its midvictorian heels come lo think of it 3961 was kind to the smileys and i hope it was to you and yours we had what might be called a typical human year busy quar reling being happy working getting nowhere in particular but making a lot of fuss in the process and here comes another one at us this is a pretty rough one to face with the bomb sitting there like a great obscene vul ture but i suspect that like most canadians well go through 1962 much as we have other years scrambling worry ing enjoying going three steps forward and two back t for one have no intention of sitting around sweating about the blasted bomb first thing on he agenda is to cock the usual defiant snoot at new years and i think there is enough life in the old boy to do it once more at leasl m how are you on the new years resolutions are you a make em and break em type if so join the club theres a big membership i used to make a lot of resolutions about smoking drinking being lazy arguing with my wife and all my other sins but i found that these resolutions gave the old girl too big an edge in our little talks now i make just one grand sweeping resolution rather than a lot of little ones for example you can resolve to be better in every way during the coming year this is vague enough it means that you can devote yourself to nebulous plans of character improvement and still go on smoking boozing beating your wife kicking dogs or whatever your forte is jtyt l 11 week modern kids think that to pur- rue happiness you gotta have a hot rod t tuiiffinue ending- when the societys records for 1961 are reviewed one can not help but be impressed with the generous cooperation we have received from the stouff ville tribune as well as so many public spirited citizens in our fight against the great crip- plcr arthritis in this season of joy it should be a comforting thought for you and your staff to know thai through your unselfish support of the new year yours sincerely w preston gilbridc president canadian arthritis rheumatism sodety for parents only by nancy fun in the 1962 family schedule all happy families resemble one another every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way wrote tolstoy in anna karenlna what do you think of this ob servation is it not true that in the strong sense of belonging in the fine spirit of unity which good fun gives to a family group happy families do bear a re semblance to each other at the same time different families have good times in very differ ent ways one good product of tv is the number of families who view certain programs together reg ularly each week but tv is a spectator amusement and row ing children need active partici pation in projects other forms of leisure time activities prevent tv from having too dominant an influence on the minds and hearts of boys and girls look around and you will see the varied ways families enjoy j themselves as a group the browns are musical and they all love lo sing at least once a week in the evening they ga ther around the piano and big sister margaret plays the music for a family singsong the mackays are keen on games and each year hey invest in one new piece of play equip ment they have just cleared a space in their cellar for a rec reation room and even mother has promised to try her hand a pingpong the smiths are athletic and both parents are proud of the tumbling acts which their chil dren have perfected with pa tience and practice there are many other ways families enjoy themselves list ening to he radio reading aloud going lo movies aking walks or motor drives skiing skating or tobogganing togeth er pursuing a handicraft or a photography hobby it is not easy for a preschool youngster to be a good loser or a generous winner but when mother or dad take time to play simple games with their child ren and encourage them in fair play boys and girls are prepar ed for group life with chums their own age it is easier for them to enter into activities in school and community groups happily and wholeheartedly wih their friends as they grow older acquaintances and slrangers in the outside world are often critical but in he home circle because a child feels secure and is encouraged he can quickly learn new skills a little praise from dad for the wooden boat his boy built himself a piece of cleaves i furniture which father and son i isave struggled together to make i as a surprise for mother thes 1 experiences give a boy eonfi- j dence a few years later when he enters woodcraft group under a trained instructor the great thing about family fun is that it trains a child in satisfying efficient living there i a good deal of con troversy these days about the benefits and drawbacks of dif ferent systems of bringing up children emphasis should be placed not on a plan of discip line but on the atmosphere in the home every child should know that mother and father love each other and enjoy each others company every child should have that wonderfully comforting feeling of belong ing of being loved for his own sake if the routine of the fam ily life includes generous time for play as well as work the children going out from that home are likely to be wellad justed useful citizens there is nothing which can take the place of a little childs memories of happy times to gether in the home i wonder boasted charles kingsley in a lelter lo his wife i wonder if there is as much laughter in any home in england as in ours the year before us sec we have here a bright new year a book so clean
