thankoffering meeting held in the church on claremont ont may 13 1961 tribune editor stouffville ont dear sir almost every issue of the tribune during the past month has contained an item concern ing a breakdown of the picker ing township tax rate i may be mistaken but by reading be tween the lines i would gather that the council is attempting to impress on the ratepayers the fact that they as a govern ing body are steadily losing their control over the major por tion of the collected tax dollar figures do not lie and i am sure that we as ratepayers must fully realize the uncomfortable position that a council now finds itself in they have be come merely a rubber stamp or a collecting agency i would suggest however that come nomination night there will be those who will attempt to throw the tax rate tale up in the members faces and they will be the usual sitting ducks for a situation that for the most part is not their fault i feel that it is high time for the council to assert itself and attempt to cut those costs at the county and high school level in one year according o the tribunes latest figures these two combined bodies have accounted for a rate increase of more than seven mills to my way of thinking such costs must be levelled off or mr pic kering ratepayer i going to be taxed right off his property whatever methods you employ mr reeve you may be sure it will have the support of every thinking resident yours sincerely overtaxed glen major mr and mrs boshy and boys of toronto spent the weekend with mr george gibson at his cottage here miss betty risebrough
