busv week on parliament hill the national productivity council got down to business with a full clays meeting under the chairmanship of george de young president of atlas steel the minister of trade and commerce and myself were present i could rot stay all day as i had to attend a meeting on amendments to the unemploy ment insurance act the new american ambassa dor mr merchant is coming to pay his respects in a day or two the first meeting of manage ment and labour called by the minister of trade and com merce and the minister of la bour went off well consider able progress was made with acceptance in principle at least of the idea of labour and man agement cooperating down the line certainly the extension of this principle could mean tremen dous difference in labourman agement relations in this coun try all it needs is a new look at labour management dealings why should not both sides try to get along in their own inter ests and in the interest of the canadian public another interesting getto gether lately as a means of amassing more information about current problems was a meeting called by the canadian conference on education the chairman was kurt r swinton and the meeting was called to announce a new study on the relationship between un employment and education among those in attendance in addition to myself as minis to hold leaders school at manchester labour was mr jodoin president of the canadian la bour congress and mr w george of the canadian manu facturers association also in attendance was mr george rob erts principal of ocvi in oshawa the house recently gave first reading to a new bill sponsored by the minister of labour and dealing with the rehabilitation of disabled persons the bill would coordinate existing plans and programs and would enlist federal and provincial cooperation the department of labour under the new bill would co ordinate federal activities in the field of vocational rehabili tation of disabled persons is provided for under the legisla tion the council chairman will receive remuneration and other members would be allowed trav elling expenses the whole basis of the new legislation is to encourage a more positive attitude among the provinces towards disabled or handicapped persons at the present time there are many people who for lack of training or other assistance find themselves unable to earn a living many of these people are not able to get in touch with the proper authorities in the prov ince in which they live in many cases they are not aware of the services which are available a more positive attitude to wards these people as provided in the legislation would result in many more being assisted than is presently the case postmortem on conventions was the order of the day in the commons on monday and tues day with both the liberal and conservative rallies coming in for analysis and criticism members on the opposition side said that the conservative rally was dull and government members maintained the liberal rally in ottawa in january was completely without organiza tion the flurry arose on monday following a liberal nonconfi dence motion and spilled over year with great gusto it is doubtful if even the most elab orate celebrations had any more irish or any more fun than the recognition of the day at cedar grove school the blackboards were fes tooned with shamrocks and no matter what the national origin there was nary a child that was not wearin a bit o green the regular red cross meeting co incided with the 17th of march and the children planned the meeting to make the most of that date every child took some part in the programme all who take music lessons had their chance at the piano as the programme progressed and from all appearances there will be no shortage of musical talent in the village in the next few years billy dawson who plays the accordion gave several ren ditions and showed his progress admirably those who do not lean towards music contributed to the programme with wonder ful irish stories about lepre chauns and poems about every thing under the irish sun when the official programme was over the children sang all the songs they have learned un der mr bushs careful instruc tion and both junior and senior choirs sang well loud and long for a school that has a very limited irish representation they gave the irish saint a splen did anniversary celebration it is always a treat to see the school children conduct their meetings and programmes the preparation and conducting of the meeting is left entirely to the children and they do the job beautifully jerry dean who is president of the junior red cross this year handles affairs with ability and patience and when he is called upon to act as prompter for the small tykes he handles that with the same ease and charm as he does the planned and rehearsed parts of the programme when you go from puddle to hump along the roads and your muffler finally gives out and the kitchen floor is mudcovered all the time it must be spring some picnickers apparently lighted a fire by george reesors pile of ties on sunday and did not take sensible precautions with their fire the result was complete loss of the whole pile of ties this is the kind of care lessness that makes a farmer very leary about granting per mission to strangers and down right annoyed when the privi lege is abused as was the case on sunday tile euchre series ended on monday night with winnie el- son and ben lotton heading the series carrying prizes were won by margaret oldham and charlie booth daw sons accident she sprained her ankle while playing basketball hope it will soon be better on tuesday by wednesday the house had got conventions pretty well out of its system and was buckling down to regular business in a drive towards the easter recess if everyone who drives a car if everyone who drives a car could lie a month in bed with broken bones avii stitched- up wounds or fractures of the head and there endure the agonies that many people do theyd never need preach safety any more to me or you if everyone could stand beside the bed of a close friend and hear the doctor say no hopes before that fatal end and see him there unconscious never knowing what took place the laws and rules of traffic i am sure wed soon embrace if everyone could meet the wife and child he left behind and step into the darkened home where once the sunlight shined and look upon the vacant chair where daddy used to sit im sure each reckless driver would be forced to think a bit if everyone would realize pedes trians on the street have just as much the right-of- way as those upon the seat and train their eyes for children who run recklessly at play this steady toll of human lives would drop from day to day if everyone who drives a car would heed the danger signs placed by highway engineers who also marked the lines to keep the traffic in the lane and give it proper space the accidents we read about could not have taken place and last if he who takes the wheel would say a little j prayer and keep in mind those in the car dependent on his care and make a vow and pledge himself to never take a chance the great crusade of safety then would suddenly advance author unknown garden service continued from page 2 answer is simple because we have a canadian climate and canadian conditions that are entirely different from those found anywhere else in the world there are certain varie ties of flowers and vegetables grass and shrubbery that may give wonderful results say in england or france or the unit ed states but which will not do well if at all in canada some are much too tender some re quire a longer growing season than we have in the greater part of this country some re quire entirely different soil some for various reasons might be highly susceptible to some diseases blight or other ene mies which may be found here but not elsewhere because of our special climate and other conditions canadian seed cata logues only list those varieties of flowers and vegefjies grass and so on which will normally thrive in canada and which have been tested under cana dian conditions and are recom mended especially for canadian conditions indeed seed firms would be foolish to follow any other course because it is in their direct interest as well as that of the buyer that the seeds purchased should do well dater and numbering stamps full line in stock 60c to 95c get them at stouffville tribune w d atkinson thoue stouffvilik s03 licensed auctioneer and sale manager salks
