look at what made the news for 52 weeks and now is history in cedar grove none of us will ever forget the cruel blustery entrance of i960 but some of us will recall it with a shjdder telephone lines were down drifts no seen for many years crowded the road power was off for hours and days the waltons will remember sick children and no heat the shoudys were on night duty throwing logs into the fireplace douglas lapp developed pneu monia and the nearest operating telephone was jim crichtons the armstrongs were refugees from their home for a week visiting the ritchies while skating remained per fect at cedarena other things were fast becoming imperfect the roads were terrible ice made the woodland park hill like a roller coaster gone ber- yerk we joined whltevale in sadness at the loss of their old and well loved baptist church by lire and metropolitan tor- onto published a dream plan for 19s0 which included a little loo much of our area to be less than a nightmare while the year was still young we had a false spring thaw bui february not to be outdone by its predecessor pre- sontod us with a monumental blizzard that left all but jack frost breathless lights were tfl ihe hew year we erfersi our greetings v and good wishes to you as the frontiers of achievement and rjppoitrmrty move ever outward may alt of us in this com munity reach out to a future of greater efrfeawtiigher accomplishment stouffville district credit union k ii i 1 1- i left burning up and down the tenth as beacons to guide blind ed drivers home the whitta- kers abandoned their car and j the road at gordon dimrnas and took to their feet and the fields charlie croucher was the last driver down the tenth be- fore dave ritchie and ken sha- fen straddled that artery i was a tossup whether it was better to be on the road or home waiting for news the only good thing about that event was the wonderful stories some of j the oldtimers told to show us what a paltry run y it really was by march we stilt had tons of snow excellent skating and some stray arctic birds to add interest to the white landscape- a tobogganing party was org- anized and well attended and tn mid month we had a spectac- ular eclipse of the moon right over cedar grove the month ended on a squooshy note but j skating continued until march 26th and about then locust hill advertised complete flying cour- scs for s3sj our thoughts seriously turn ed toward spring in april and we planned a spring dance complained about the springy roads and some of our horsey young fry became interested in j the new local branch of the pony club may brought the closing af ter 7i years of cedar grove store and ihe loss has been suf fered all year now at the be ginning of ihe new year we have hopes and rumours to build on that our store will reopen under the ownership of mr and mrs davis and rain we had so much rain in may that the red winged blackbirds thought the entire country was swamp the cbc on a hunt for culture were seen photo graphing the st lawrence mar ket for television sim reesor included in spite of the soggy month of may the tractors were hum ming on the land very early in june 1960 also this month we saw what ihe cbc was driving at and it was one of the best tv bits for a long time a com parison in pictures of two mar kets stock and produce but we had to look hard to find sim the petries and maurice hamill took a sunday off to ride the last steam passenger train and a new baseball diam ond was completed on the cor ner lot the village was full of germs of all kinds and des criptions and those without coughs had lumps and those without lumps had rashes gib and evelyn whittamore made a mark in local history with their help yourself garden and the reesors held their onceadecade reunion in mark- ham fair grounds the petty reunion held this year at the milroys drew over one hundred relatives to ihe annual get- together- before the month closed a herd of vandals broke into woodland park store and created their own particular brand of havoc garden party and july are synonymous in cedar grove and this year we had lovely wea ther and an excellent show these we expect as a matter of course but 1950 could be labelled outstanding on both counts an opportunist tried to take advantage of ila crichton and run off with some cash but he tried ii with the wrong gal the police apprehended the young man before he had left the vicinity wally reesor lost a finger in a hailing operation i and ihanks the century in which we live got it beck again shortly after august memories are over shadowed by the tremendous ipss to both its owner and local history of the pioneer barn built in 1s31 and still used by harold coakwell it was a landmark in the community and precious to all who knew it mourning still presides in cedar grove at men tion of augusts contribution to the year this month sent us into the garden to watch echo spin through the heavens and sent the children to markham for daily swimming lessons volley ball was drawing all ages almost every night on the corner lot and thieves broke in to zion church and stole the flatware to tie up a less than good month in september we went back to school and out to the ex the fall had such an arid be ginning we were not sure vvhe- ther autumn or drought was turning the i tees from green to brown this was the month that mr k made a fool of him self at the un meetings and in some inexplicable way his behaviour left us feeling easier ss no 20 brought october honours to the village by win ning first prize for their float entry al markham fair the first thanksgiving well de served the reward and ihe chil dren added to their glories by wins in various other entries we were interested to note that ucv pick was installed as chair man of york presbytery wen though we can no longer claim him as our own october spark- ed our interest through some of ihe local high school students in a project of 12a geography class their aim was to raise 5s00 lo finance a trip lo gerald- ton the postscript to that news is thai they are well on the way to their objective and ex pect to really see northern on tario early in 1960 this month which usually ends ihe fall only began it in 60 we had a fall lo break all records and chrysanthemums in ihe gardens were never more beautiful har old lapp just nicely got his silo filled when it burst asunder and spilled its contents all over the barnyard as the month drew o its inimitable eerie close ou goblins collected fo un1cef as well as for them selves and the hunting season opened with most of the village posted we begin november willi beautiful autumn weather a thunderstorm and a concern over our childrens education a panel discussion in the school with our own particular prob lems on the agenda helped to answer a few of our education al problems and the thunder storm we took as a prediction of six weeks good weather mr and mrs davis and their fam ily moved into the store and elliot harrington continued his second career work on behalf of the scarborough farmers many of our residents attended ihe 6th annual meeting of ihe york chapter of the pennsyl vania german folklore soc and enjoyed homemade saus age and sauerkraut as well as an interesting talk on supersti tions cedar grove jchool tcooped the village at the beginning of december by playing host to a group of educators from all over the world and visiting here through ihe colombo plan we were beginning lo get prelly measlcy by then and through all this prechristmas month it has been nip and tuck whether there would he anyone at school or not we had a lovely white gift service at ion church and mr george freeman had a glo rious 90 th birthday celebration some of us went to the poles this month but not very many of us now the year closes with the ground gently covered with snow and sleigh bells heard in the village almost every night well this was the general picture but is is in the specific personal and group activities that ihe heart of our village throbs we have had gains and losses in the year past and we know rejoicing and grief some of us for the first time we count more girls than
