tkxiii oeceoba 22 i960 ihe stouftyille i8j3une poe hodgins stars in squirt goal during the past week local goaltenders have moved into the sports spotlight first it was jim johnston in the mark- ham cage on tuesday night it was dave kelly la the wood- bridge net of equal importance however was the performance of geo hodgins between the pipes for boston in the squirt league the seven year old lad son of mr and mrs donald hodgin5 hawthorne avenue was sensational in spite of his teams 21 loss to the canadiens time ard time again he was peppered with shots but he held the fort like a real veteran on ly billy thornhill and kim gur- ney could find an opening to score mike brillinger notched the lone boston tally on a pass from bobby lee the effort staged by the bruin netminder was the talk of the squirt league management on tuesday eve ning each lad in the lineup is given an equal opportunity to prove his ability in the goal the boys are protected by plas tic face guards dinty hodg ins was an athlete of note in his heyday and it appears that his son george is follow ing in father hodgins footsteps leafs 2 hawks 1 wayne emmerson scored two goals to keep the maple leafs winstreak intact they edged chicago 21 kevin acton fired the lone tally for the hawks united missionary church wms christinas meeting the home of mrs e crowder baker ave was beautifully dec orated to welcome the wms of the united missionary church for their christmas meeting on thursday dec 15 the service was in charge of the president mrs e herbert scripture read ings prayer and the singing of christmas carols filled the first part of the program and the guest of the evening was intro duced dr jean erb who with her husband dr john erb has spent several years in nigeria on the missionary medical staff of the hospital at tungan ma- gajiya they with their four children are living in toronto while on furlough but expect rulmhu as a christmas plant poin- settia has few equals yet isnt it maddening when the plant fades just as the holiday season roils around horticulturists with the on tario department of agriculture to return to africa next june dr erb had asked several ladies to reprent the native staff helpers at t m hospital and in a most interesting man ner had them tell something of their tribe and early life and of how they became christians and came to work at a mission ary hospital through the years many of the patients have been won for christ by the ministry and witness of the doctors and nurses during the closing moments of the service the ladies held candles each one lighting their neighbours candle thus show ing how the light of the gospel of christ is passed from one person to another the christmas offering for the wms missionary project was received and each one pres ent was given a small african j hut for an individual offering box the moments of friendship and fellowship at the close of the meeting were enjoyed by all asanas say that you can get six good weeks out of your poinsettias if you bear in mind these tips keep the plant in a bright sun ny location avoid drafts or hot- air registers poinsettias need steady temperatures water as soon as the soil appears dry temperature is the important factor if a day temperature of about 70 degrees f and a night temperature of 60 to 63 degrees f are maintained your plants will thrive through and for some time after christmas if the lower leaves turn yel low wilt and drop blame dry soil and a sudden temperature change if the plant is stunted with yellowing of the top leaves a nitrogen deficiency is probably the cause after the plarvts are established its a good idea to feed them every 2 weeks with a complete fertilizer dont let poinsettias have any electric light after the first of september or flowering may suffer one good way to cut down on criticism is to do away with all second guessers r xv christ church anglican stouffvilli rev j o tiller rector sunday december 25th 1960 christmas bible says god so loved the world that he gave his only son as we prepare to celebrate an other christmas how many of us remember these words or are our thourhts too completely oc cupied with a present for uncle john and aint susie with the preparation of lavish and expen sive decorations with the table ettinrs for a sumptuous feast god did so love the world that he rave us his son that he gave us this day that we call christmas this he gave us rothins more he did not supply the traditions he spoke not of holly and mistletoe ncr of food ard feasting the many things that have come to b associated with toe observance of christmas by all too many people have been added through the centuries the sad pari of it all is that some have become so fascinated by all the embellishments that they have lost sight of the true meaning of christmas christs birthday the day on which christ was born the day of the redeemer a holy day a spiritual day let us jcocp our bright christ mas trees the colored lights and deck the halls with boughs of holly let us set a tabic that would please the palate of a king but with it all let us find the time to ecarch hopefully for the joy and peace that was is a santa claus this famous editorial reply to the pleading almost tearful in quiry vt a young girl is there really a santa claus is repeated year attcr year and probably will be a thousand years from now there is indeed a santa claus and he is real as real as we can capect him to be and he con tinues to exist because there is real need for him we can argue most of us argue that christ mas is too commercial the send ing of christmas cards to every body in toan is grossly overdone there is too much emphasis on giftgiving and receiving ah of these things may well b true but we dont see how any one am rightly complain about santa claus he belongs to tho very young to the unspoiled th hopeful he gives some meaning and purpose albeit not completely understood to those too- young to comprehend the true meaning and purpose of christmas and in all fairness it must be said that only the deep religious significance of this great holiday is more rewarding to so many than dear old santa as the new york sun editorial v aptly said a thousand year from now virginia nay tet times ten i years from now he will continue to rnafc glad the heart of dumboofl
