stone foundation and the silo standing sentinel over the ashes of a noble struc ture which for 129 years served its useful purpose the loss of a barn by fire is an everpresent fear in the mind of every farmer and from the moment smoke is spotted on the horizon a bond of deep sym pathy that is almost tangible goes out to the victim from those who silently count their blessings this particular fire meant a tragic loss in many quarters to harold coakwell the embers he watched through the night represented a summers time and work for both him and his men and 7oc0 bales of good hay to ella coakwell and le- ona brown the fite reawakened memories of a childhood play ground all the reesor families have lost a landmark precious in the annals of their history the barn until purchased by har old coakwell was always own ed by a reesor high in the south gable on a wide pine board the date 1s31 was carved by peter reesor builder of a barn a fine stone house a chris tian reputation and a family that eight generations later re member him with pride the loss is felt by men whose respect for farmers and farm ing was stated in the character istic construction and the dura bility of peter reesors barn the marvel is that such a build ing could have been erected at all fourteen inch hand hewn beams spanned its foundation and one beam ran the full 80 feet unbroken lifted into place by men without any present- day equipment not only did peter design a functional barn but he built a beautifully proportioned struc ture and located it in such pic turesque surroundings that it has often been a challenge to artists and photographers on tuesday morning harold was working in the barn with his men when the fire started he saw it at once and thought he had extinguished it but per haps because of the hay dust a final bucket of water set it off with a roar in a short time hun dreds of people from as far away as whitby stouffviue and richmond hill stood watching helplesslyas the fire roared to frightening proportions fire men concentrated on saving the newlyremodelled old stone house to the south and the mc- clennans house to the north this ire was indeed a multi ple tragedy the barn was a monument to the man who made it but surely the character of the pioneer spirit it repre sented will survive the loss of coakweus fire atha congratulations to mr and mrs joe tran on their a breakin about three weeks ago and thieves stole all the flatware- the amount of the loss is esti mated at about three hundred dollars teenagers and their cars fre quent targets for adult brick bats have received support from an authoritative quarter edward galway supervisor of the department of transports motor vehicle inspection centre says teenagers are always being criticized and a lot of the criti cism is unfair we are exam- ing cars all day and teenagers cars are no worse than any on the highway as far as safety is concerned he believes the centre known as the safety lane is on falstaff ave south of the intersection of keele st and no 401 highway it was established last year to determine the roadworthiness of all vehicles on the highway and whether you are buying your first car or already own one the safety check is well worth the few minutes involved the inspection is free and at present entirely voluntary on arrival you are greeted by an inspector who will check your ownership certificate and note mileage on your speedometer the first test delects faulty wheel alignment and then the car is raised on a pneumatic jack for a full inspection of the front end the inspectors look be eesfnaietieii co lp stouftville phone 200 j j 72 monthly nha 6tc mortgage g room solid brki finished for immediate occupancy colored filed bath 11 block divided basement maho gany steering assembly the final test in this section involves scrutiny of the exhaust system for leaks and loose connections in the next section a box of tricks containing a photoelectric cell measures the candlepower of the headlamps and indicates whether they are all correctly aligned here also the cars tail brake license plate and direction lights are tested in the final section the inspec tor tests the brakes he drives over four steel plates set in the floor and throws out all anchors another box of tricks connected to the plates then indicates on four dials the braking effect exerted by each wheel the in spectors make every effort to be fair and if the car puts up a poor showing in the first try they will repeat the test tjiey are concerned mainly with see ing that the braking effort of the front wheels is equal before the car is checked out they make a final inspection of the parking brake all the glass the rearview mirror horn and windshield wipers electrically operated doors are illegal and if your car is fitted with them you will find a big black x on the inspection report another fac tor checked is visibility any thing dangling from front or rear windscreen is frowned on and will mar an otherwise clean report altogether more than three dozen items affecting the safe operation of a car are checked if your pride and joy merits a clean bill of health the inspec tion report marked approved and a slicker will be placed on the cars windscreen showing that you have passed and nam ing the month of the test the department recommends that all cars be brought in for testing once a year or every 5000 miles mr galway believes there is some misunderstanding about the operation of the centre par ticularly the removal of licence plates from unefe cars our primary interest is safety not taking people off the road he says he explains that when a driver is stopped by the police and told to bring his car to the centre it receives the usual examination if it is safe the inspector will pass it if not the driver is told what is wrong and is given 10 days in which to rectify the trouble only if the driver docs not bring the back within 10 days are the police informed and the licence plates removed united missionary church rev alfred rees minister sunday august 21st 1960 dicksoxs hill 945 am worship sermon who will be my disciple 1050 am sunday school for younger drivers who bring their cats in i bought a new car about 3 months ago and i want to make certain it is in good condition he explained it was dons second visit to the centre since he had
