expect over 2000 to attend cedar groves annual garden party normally cedar grove je a quiet farming community set tled comfortably along the banks of the little rouge piver and comprising about fifty fam ilies but every on the first saturday of july this gentle village suffers a population ex plosion and close to two thou sand people in hundreds of cars converge on cedar grove cover ing from four to five acres of parking space the reason for the influx goes back 35 years to a minstrel show produced by local talent and presented outdoors to raise money for a community rink the minstrel show lasted two years and the third year it was decided to obtain professional tant and present a real variety programme it wasnt long be fore the cedar grove venture became a traditional july fes tivity with the quality of the programme bringing the crowds and the crowds making top en tertainment possible oldtimersl who have been patrons over the years know well what to expect of the cedar grove show but newcomers are always surprised and delighted at the beautiful setting a nat ural amphitheatre rising from the river bank climbs an acre of hill surrounded by tall lacy cedars the permanent stage is set in the valley against a back ground of trees and shimmering water and overhead the stars vie with the colourful lights and gay costumes it is a lovely spot there are differences of opin ion on whether it is better to sit on the benches near the stage or spread a blanket and view the performers from the hill no matter what parents prefer children usually like to see the whirling dancers jugglers and acrobats in wideeyed wonder at close range whether it is the hill or near the stage an ex cellent pa system beings the entire performance to every ear and the entertainers are chosen for their versatility at long range over the years many of can adas top professional perform ers have added their talent to the lineup of cedar groves var iety show enchanted strings of television and cne fame the swiss bell ringers the commadores and the four gen- 1 tlemen billy meek has emeeed the show and les barker the famous cartoonist was a great hit with the children free parking has become a science at this annual event one year two lots- three acres were cleared of cars in twelve minutes with no fenders dented no fuss just fast efficient direc tion no baby sitters are needed on this night it is a family affair look at the talent for this year cy leonard will emcee the show and his ventriloquism has en chanted children all over the country atilla galamb the six year old saxophone artist a prodigy of exceptional talent the singing strings a glamor ous attraction for those who fa vour fiddles elaine anderson the famous american juggler marie mae the versatile tap and acrobatic dancer the william twins with their clever comedy contortions and handbalancing act bruce webb the cbcs fine bass soloist is returning this year by request of course there is accompaniment for all of these the rink adjacent to the am phitheatre still benefits by the proceeds of cedar groves enter prise but because of the large attendance the price has not risen as you might expect ad ults still the york county hospital newmarket on monday june 13 i960 be loved husband of ruby crowder and father of mrs carl tom- linson margaret of toronto mrs jack gray mae of gar den grove california and john of newmarket he was the son o the late manny hisey and brother of mrs horace greaves of toronto funeral was from roadhouse and rose funeral home newmarket on wednes day at 2 pm with interment in newmarket cemetery mr hisey was a nephew of mrs a grubin church street the funeral for his aunt mrs fred hisey was held here at the same time mrs w sandle graduates banquet on monday evening june 13 the grade 7 mothers of the gormley home and school as sociation gave a dinner in hon our of the graduating class of ss no 7 markham the din ner was held in the sr room in the graduating class were barbara davison mary miller cheryl cochrane and glenda moses were presented with their stripes campfire brought the even ing to a close with mrs currie presenting betty cayman with a prfce for the most cookie or ders and the fairy six each with a token for the six with the most orders linda gardhouse was the top cookie girl for the guides and the kingfisher pa trol received a book for their patrol box the commissioners were met at the door shiriey davison meeting mrs currie nan and judy varden met mrs gunn and margaret sandle met mrs lye this event brought to a close the regular meetings of the guides and brownies several special events are planned for the holiday months brownies the brownie hike was post poned from sat june is to sat june 25 will the mothers of girls who are 8 to 11 years of age by sept 1st and who wish to have their daughters join the brownie group please phono mrs gord on hardie at gormley 5434 as soon as possible bridal shower on friday evening friends gathered at the home of mr and mrs harry barber to have a miscellaneous shower in hon our of their daughter miss mar- jorie barber and mr gordon davie who are being married in victoria square united church on friday evening july 8 they received many beautiful and useful gifts and thanked ev eryone for remembering them baby band graduation the annual baby band grad uation and party was held in the sunday school room on satur day afternoon the mission band members and wms were also present mrs sandle was in charge of the meeting words of welcome were given by mrs h mccague the mission band sang several of their choruses and also had some of their work on display mrs allan orr is the leader assisted by mrs lloyd tennyson mrs barry king mrs f mcroberts and mrs s boynton the highlight of the afternoon came when the following mem bers of the baby band gradu ated to the mission band royce king margaret erapringham ann smith gail sanderson and harrypeter vanderkooy each member passed through a decor ated archway and under the ar ches of lloyd vanderkooy bruce cowie anita orr and margaret sandle mrs binning- ton met the graduates and pre sented them with their certifi cates mrs sandle placed a hat on their heads also a buttoniere was pinned on them with their name on it the mission band also held a graduation ceremony when margaret sandle lloyd vander kooy and yvonne koning grad uated mrs mccaguo presented them with a gift a film on the raggedy elf was shown church news mr clarence steckley was the supt in the sunday school on sunday due to the absence of mr percy bennett who was at tending the mens conference at canadian keswick muskoka over the weekend rev john morris stm of the aurora united church at tended the official board meet ing at headford on thursday evening and presented the claims of the toronto home missions church extension fund sunday june 26 at 1130 am mr fred milnes will be in charge of the church service mr milnes is a candidate for the ministry from danforth united church he expects to begin his first year theology in emmanu el college this fall bake sale the first bake sale of the season will be held on the lawn of the church on thursday hospital in castor alberta on june 9th in her 79th year she was the daughter of the late mr and mrs jonas millet of ringwood district she leaves to mourn her husband joseph and two sons hav- ery and allan vera and mer- vin predeceased her also 11 grandchildren survive her she was buried in the cemetery at markham alberta with mr and mrs caulfield at oakville over sunday mrs otto and some of her
