i960 tribune editor stouffville ont dear sir i read your editorial that ap peared in last weeks issue on conservation pniks in picker ing township and for the most part i arce with it most sin cerely i must admit i was slightly puzzled at reeve scotts stand on the matter as it was written in the tribune of jan 21 i realize very well that t lie reeve is most concerned over the spending of the taxpayers dollar but perhaps in this in stance he is heing penny wise and pound foolish i contend that the greenwood park serves a marvellous pur pose not only to the urban resi dents of metro toronto but also to hundreds of rural ratepayers right in our own municipality ii the reeve is so concerned over heavy maintenance costs on the greenwood road i see no reason why council cannot see their way clear to hardtop it like other heavilytravelled thoroughfares in the township surely the southern portion of the municipality obtain their share of permanent pavement here indeed might be a fine opportunity to spread a little of this muchappreciated road work among the rural residents after all believe it or not we do pay a considerable amount of tax money into the town ships coffers i do not mean to be too criti cal of the reeve but i believe in this case at least there is much more to be considered than a three mile stretch of gravel roadway if every reeve in every township took a simi lar stand the conservation au thoritys park land projects would be definitely limited thankyou for permiulnj ire to air my views on this mstter sincerely a taxpayer fifteen new street lights will be erected in the hamlet of brougham and twelve existing fixtures will be remodelled ac cording to information provided by messrs roy miller and jack mairs at a special meeting of pickering twp council on mon day evening the cost of the project has been estimated in excess of s2000 the township will bear 40 of the capital cost payable on completion of the work brougham will pay 60sr the figure being spread over a three year period reeve sherman scott warned council that any policy estab lished with regard to the broug ham request could also apply to other hamlets throughout the township including whitevale green river dumbarton pick ering beach etc the reeve in timated that such projects could in future years place a rather heavy burden on the more rural areas of the municipality councillor harry ashton con tended that brougham residents should not be required to pay looi of the cost involved since they alone were not receiving the sole benefit from the expen diture he suggested that a sim ilar policy should apply to side walk construction he noted however that sewer and water installations could not be con sidered in the same light since the service was a benefit only to the residents in the immed iate area at least a halfdozen motions were cither defeated or with drawn before a final decision was reached the discussion lasted for more than an hour ontario county junior
