cemetery a hole can be drilled inlo any bodys patience by a constant bore editors mail pickering onl feb 5 i960 the editor stouffville tribune dear sir from your editorial of janu ary 26th and a letter to the edi tor appearing in your issue of february 4th it mighl appear as if there is some misunder standing of my attitude towards conservation areas first let me make it clear that i am not opposed lo conserva tion areas even if ihe name in many cases is a misnomer and they should rightly be called recreation areas but 1 am op posed lo any particular section of the conservation authority being asked to contribute more than their share to these areas the moneys raised for the purposes of the metropolitan toronto and region conserva tion authority are raised by a per capita levy across the au thority and the per capita levy is the same for the residents of stouffville metro toronto pic kering township or elsewhere within the authority al the present time the green wood conservation area con sists of slightly over 100 acres and the proposed claremont area contains over 300 acres access to the greenwood area basis of assessment of surround ing properties but these factors will not affect the authority lands therefore once again picker ing township ratepayers are be ing asked to subsidize the au thority especially as regards housing on conservation areas these subsidized conservation areas are also in direct competi tion with many parks being op- crated by taxpaors of the township who are paying taxes on land and buildings plus a business tax and in effect these taxpayers are being asked to subsidize their competition i believe thai the principle of conservation areas is good and i believe that the time lo ac quire them is now but there is some danger of pickering town ship becoming the focal point of many of the services for met ro toronto by this i mean that pickering is being dissected by railroads access highways and power lines and these ser vices in themselves will remove many thousands of acres of ihe township from ultimate de velopment and if pickering is to lei many additional hundreds or oven thousands of acres of land which someday would be capable of attracting belter lhan average housing be converted lo parks primarily for other lhan is achieved by use of township local use then this should be roads from either no 2 high- 1 done at no additional cost to the way or no 7 highway these j township predominantly rural roads re- we are glad to hear that mr dean mairs who is in st mich aels hospital is coming along as well as lo the conserva tion area and in providing this increased maintenance the town ship is subsidizing the conser vation area access to the clare mont area will also be by way of township roads even
