possible proposed site for the new york university the matter was discussed brief ly at a special meeting of pick ering township council on dance at claremont friday january 29 costly to cemetery mr ben lotton a member of the erskine cemetery board has asked council to support the erection of a checkerboard at the intersection of fairport road he appeared before a spe cial meeting of council on mon day night he stated that motor ists were continually driving their vehicles off the road and crashing into the cemetery fence the damage to date has risen to more than 510000 the driver is always some one who cant pay for the dam age said mr lotton mr lotton also requested that council consider the dona tion of a grant towards the up keep of the cenotaph on the altona road reeve sherman scott agreed that council would give both matters their consideration he noted that they would view the location of the cemetery when the members conducted their regular road inspection per haps a checkerboard is at least a partial solution to the pro blem said the reeve square modern dancing to music by moonlight valley boys come one come all have fun admission 100 or 175 a couple refreshments available doors open at s pm monday night mr wm g newman had suggested previously to council that the members should give serious thought to the benefits of acquiring the university irv the municipality he intimated that a more southerly site would be appropriate since it would be adjacent to water and sewer age services reeve scott eon- tended that providing these ser vices would constitute one of the more serious problems a committee of nine men was formed to discuss the pros and cons of the new venture the following names were proposed messrs wm g newman chas cooper harold mitchell dr gordon edmunds wm thomp son prof labrie edgar james sherman scott and allan lish- man mr kenneth clarke a member of the planning board was also named as a tenth member reeve scott suggested that anyone interested in the project would be welcome to attend the initial meeting of the committee the committee will merely find out if we really want the university or only think we do said the reeve councillor ashton pointed out that the dayliner operated by the cpsl would provide axccl- requests exemptions from added rates pickering twp council took no action on a request from mr harry newman requesting that certain properties be ex empted from special rates in cluding fire garbage etc mr newmans letter was filed with council in 1959 but was held over for action until the 1960 members took office dep reeve ross hawthorne contended that mr newmans letter failed to refer to any specific properties i would like to know what land is referred to he said councillor harry ashton sug gested that the amount of mon ey involved on mr newmans two southerly farms would not be in excess of 5800 per year perhaps the courts would be the best place to decide the issue stated reeve sherman scott councillor edgar james con tended that the two newman properties in question could hardly be described as farms if we established such a pol icy every farm in our water area could claim exemptions said councillor ashton dunbarton ont jan 25 i960 the tribune stouffville ont dear sir the biggest task in the near future for pickering township council is the netting of the tax rate for this year the tax collector then has the task of getting this tax money into the coffers of the township for several years the arrears of taxes have presented a ser ious problem and any solution to the reduction of these ar rears and making it easier for the taxpayer to meet his obliga tions should be seriously con sidered in comparing our pre-pay- ment rate of 1 to other mu nicipalities 1 is a ridiculous ly law rate and definitely should be increased to a rate where it would be worth an extra ef fort on the taxpayers part to get in prepayments scarboro shows already a 35 increase in prepayments this year and this is a result of an increased percentage this year from 3 to av the majority of taxpayers in this township are in a wage bracket going from low to mod- crate and in a great many cases the gathering of sufficient funds to meet 3 tax payments is a grave matter i believe consideration should be given to the possibility of increasing payments from 3 to 4 installments would make the burden much easier to a vast number of people the increase of percentage for prepayment and the extra bookkeeping involved in a four payment system would be more than offset by taxes coming in more freely and by coming in to a greater extent at the pro per time by the avoidance of short term bank loans for tem porary financing for every 510000 prepaid at an increased percentage of 1 the township would lose 5100 for every 510000 borrowed from the bank the cost will be 600 for every dollar of ar rears in taxes the cost of bor rowing will be 6 to meet funds needed for township operations this in turn is passed on to the delinquent taxpayer thus mak ing it harder for the already overpressed taxpayer tax payments of any sort in any field is a sore matter with most people and it should be the concern of this council to ease the pain of the tax payer wm fairgricve laying the groundwork for ontario county councils work for 1960 members on wednes day set up the boards and com than 5100000 have already been promised or collected by the pickering township historical society for display in the mu seum to be erected here according to w g lavvson president of the society three buildings planned to form the nucleus of the museum will not hold all the objects proffer ed by contributors as far away as sarnia the society will shortly begin a drive for 510000 for completion of and purchase of at least one other building in addition to the log cabin and the old brougham school which is the museum site robert kershaw sarnia sew ing machine expert has offered a handoperated sewing machine used more than 100 years ago in pickering township he had refused an offer of si 000 for the machine from a large manufac turing concern some time ago the company planned to exhibit the machine in its own museum but mr kershaw declined the offer on the grounds that chil dren of pickering township should see the type of equip ment their grandmothers used years ago the fund raising campaign is still in the planning stage but al ready robert miller of broug ham has held a series of meet ings throughout the northern sections of the township while mr lawson and a committee are organizing the southern end aid has been promised by every service club and organiza tion in the entire township he said and already several of them have sent in their contri butions as have many individ uals basically the museum will consist of three buildings at the start the old brougham little red schoolhouso the more-than- 100 year old log cabin which has been moved from scarbor ough and which was one of the oldest buildings in that town ship and the boardandbatten schoolhouse at green river which it is planned will be moved here aside entirely from the fact it will provide much needed space for exhibits the build ing itself is an interesting ex ample of early ontario architec ture wide vertical planking was used in lis construction j with narrow battens covering the joint between the vertical planks hence the name similar construction was used widely throughout early ontario and many examples of it may be seen along the highways and sideroads of pickering township today it is believed the method was first used by ships carpenters in the old days when french mans bay was a busy shipping port for pine and other lumber cut in the township and shipped across the lake to the united states several sawmills were in operation along dufflns creek 100 years ago and the museum has been promised some of the old machinery from such mills some of the farmandhome implements offered and now stored in a barn in the north end of the township are so strange that some of the oldest resi dents of the township are being called upon to identify them one leading toronto antique dealer who has inspected the stored articles placed the value at at least 5100000 and per haps a great deal more since many of them can only be found in such old settled areas of pic kering township which is actu ally one of the last grcit reposi tories of such articles in north america
