fn w the stouffvuil tmbwff ftnttdiy dftr w 1959 i wish them xxck we have noted with interest that a group of energetic residents in the northwest corner of stouffville plan to embark on the construction of an outdoor natural ice arena for the skating convenience of their children this winter the rink we understand will be located at the western extremity of rupert avenue in a nowvacant lot we wish these am bitious fathers every success in their venture we do not know if these property owners have had any previous experience in the tending of an outdoor arena if they have then they no doubt know of the tak that lies ahead if they havent then the work involved may be sorely underestimated such a rink is dependent almost entirely on the whims of the weatherman too much sun too much rain or too much snow can ruin an entire winters work overnight we place the most stress on the word snow we will predict that dozens of boys and girls will enjoy many happy hours of skating on the outdoor pond until the first heavy snowfall buries the ice under a sixinch blanket immediately the interest will wane unless of course poptakes the shovel out of the cellar and removes the snow you may be sure that junior will not raise too many blisters on his hands from overexertion if someone else will do the work well have the fun seems to be the motto practised by many young people in this regard a few seasons ago a similar plan was put into operation on the stouffville tennis courts hardworking parents toiled through every spare hour of every day and every night in an effort to perfect an outdoor arena for children around the town they had amazing success boys and girls by the score flocked to the park to enjoy hockey and pleasure skating then one night it snowed not a blizzard but a typical jan uary storm now was the time for the parents only group to take charge not a single youth showed the slightest inter est in returning the rink to its previous mirrorsmooth finish it was little wonder that pop took a look at his calloused hands and decided to return the shovel to his basement cellar the only thing that removed the snow was the spring sun shine the following march perhaps the west end young people are more ambitious than our midtown youths if not then buy yourself a pair of gloves father because therell be plenty of work to do this winter alone must learn to skate at a recent meeting of the stouffville minor hockey association one coach commented that in playoff competition stouffvilles players showed a noticeable lack of skating ability as compared with rival entries the majority of other coaches present agreed with his observation we accepted the state ment with some doubt on thursday night of last week the truth of the statement was clearly substantiated stouffvilles juvenile entry engaged whitby in an exhibition tilt it is true that whitby are in a much higher class than our local club but in respect to skating ability only a neutral observer might have wondered if a junior team was playing a midget entry a large percentage of stouffville lads could neither stop quickly skate well or even maintain their bal ance they appeared to have a good mental grasp of the game but were not overly effective sitting on their pants boys of juvenile age should not have to be taught the basic rules of skating this should come in peewee and bantam ranks it would appear that too many lads today are dependent on a onehour workout per week on artificial ice and have for saken the backyard pond where good skaters and stickhandlers are really made should the slap snot be banned should hockey players be permitted to use the lethal goal- scoring weapon commonly known as the slap shot with the use of todays regular goalkeeping equipment we would answer no some players have become very effective with such shots effective to the point that the puck travels at a speed hardly visible to the human eye even in the major leagues theres hardly a netminder in existence whose reflexes are capable of such splitsecond reactions a blow on the forehead from one of these drives could easily prove fatal the main difficulty in coping with the slap shot is that neither the goalkeeper nor the player has any idea which angle of flight the puck will take it may hit the bottom corner of the cage or it may wind up in the front row of the gallery the forward or defenceman merely rifles the shot in the general direction of the net and hopes it will find the target one of these days the target will be an eye a mouth or even a life in junior ranks the slap shot is practised even more ex tensively than the orthodox wrist shot it is little wonder that the oncecriticized goalkeepers face guard is now being con sidered as a regular piece of equipment without it a goal- tenders safety is at stake when one sees twoinch backboards splintered by such drives the danger to human life and limb is even more pronounced juveniles belted by whitby 91 hoover scores lone goal a coach of a juvenile team may be required to teach his club a varied repertoire of of fensive and defensive plays but he should not have to show them how to skate that appears to be at least one chore set out for stouffville coach jack watson on thursday night of last week he watched his fifteenmember squad stumble and stagger their way through sixty minutes of stoptime hockey in the whitby arena they suffered a 91 set back whitby will be placed in an a minor class stouffville will remain in c both teams will compete in the same group prior to the omha playoffs although it is difficult to judge the capabilities of a club in an earlyseason exhibition contest it appeared that only five play ers out of the fifteenman roster could meet the specifications re quired grant foreman larry mcmullen roger stover allan boyd and bill hoover showed good promise don eddington put forth occasional bursts of speed he tested two whitby netmlnders with some labelled shots although as many more missed the target whitby iced a strong skating team their squad had a notice able weight advantage over sto uffville two defencemen don ellis and bob adams would tip the scales at over 220 pounds apiece the forwards showed plenty of speed and completed their plays with hard and ac curate shots coach watson started the game with a line comprising grant foreman at centre flank ed bv allan boyd and larry mc mullen glenn pcnnancn don eddington and garry taylor worked on another line al jack son combined with bill hoover and roy lewis for another trio keith mcdowell and wayne pe- nnanen were used on the first and second lines roger stover bill ratcliff grant morgan and bob lehman performed on the rearguard glen jackson guard ed the net stouffville started fast and had a surprised whitby club pinned in their own zone during the early minutes their game- winning hopes suffered a set back when the first shot on the net slipped past goalie jackson whitbys gary stinson was the marksman before the period had ended three more pucks hit the twine bill hoover blinked the light for the lone stouffville tally he whipped larry mcmulicns re bound into the goal the locals put forth their best effort in the second frame and although outscored 21 they had as much or more of the territorial play whitby completed the route with three unanswered tallies in the last period ken ross and stan sharman each potted a pair of goals for the winners whitby outshot stouffville 3422 on the nights play many ojf the stouffville boys looked out of condition in the first peiod a number appeared near collapse when they came in for relief a temporary sched ule has been drawn up and it is expected the team will swing into regular league action this week whitby lindsay bow- manville port perry and pos sibly ajax and uxbrfdge will comprise a local group altona grabs league lead claremont toppled have claremont hit the skids this is the
