in 1956 she was de feated in 57 but came back to win a seat in 58 she was ac claimed to the deputyreeves post in 59 councillor haw thorne entered municipal poli tics in 1958 and was returned in ward 4 last year he is a resi dent of frenchmans bay quiet meeting the meeting on friday even ing was one of the quietest in recent years the standingroom crowd that had usually greeted the candidates on previous oc casions was noticeably slim with no controversial issues on the agenda the meeting was concluded in less than 2 hours reeve sherman scott was re turned by acclamation ward 1 councillor harvey spang and ward 2 councillor edgar james were also acclaimed mr harry boyes will oppose incurnbant harry ashton in ward 3 mrs e c phelan was nominated but declined to accept wm fair- grieve and ross deakin will battle for the ward 4 seat left vacant by councillor hawthorne ward 5 councillor miss violet swan will be opposed by west rouge resident clifford lay- cock verbal exchange the only faint resemblance between this years nomination and meetings of former years was the brief and rather con fusing verbal exchange between ward 3 councillor harry ash ton and riverside drive rate payer jack hambleton the matter was received in a jocular vein by persons present it concerned the transportation of some 35 students to a nearby school in a recentlyacquired bus mr hambleton according to councillor ashton had been the lone opposition to a petition favouring the scheme need services reeve scott informed the meeting that there was little chance of pickering township acquiring industrial assessment unless water and sewerage ser vices were made available he pointed out that through a sign ed agreement with the crusader development co and later con solidated building corp such cervices would be provided at no cost to the township the proposed residential develop ment will be located at french mans bay on a site covering 670 acres of land in touching on the proposed cnr bypass line the reeve charged that council did not fa vour the project he noted that all plans had not been complete ly finalized and it was still pos sible that an alternate route might be considered he con- i tended however that if the rail road was to pass through the municipality council felt that the shortest line would be the best for the township in com menting on the acquiring of an office manager and treasurer he stated firmly that such ac tion was not meant to cast any reflection on any of the pres ent members of the clerical staff it does not mean that any of our present employees should suffer he said he prais ed the work of the planning board and urged the comple tion of a zoning bylaw for at least a portion of the township i think it is very necessary and i feel that the majority of citi zens feel the same way he noted he urged that each and every ratepayer should get out and vote every year in picker ing township is a crucial year he concluded keenly interested dep reeve mrs jean me pherson in seeking reelection to the post informed the aud ience that she had been a resi dent in the township since 1945 i have always been keenly in terested in the welfare of pick ering township she said as chairman of roads and bridges she said that she had worked in close cooperation with mem bers of the road department i am always as close to you as your telephone and no call will go unheeded she said in commenting on past ac complishments on roads she said that a planned paving pro ject was being carried on in each ward each year she ad mitted that winter maintenance costs had been very heavy and had consumed a large portion of the road budget in looking back over three years of council work she in formed the audience that she had missed only one regular meeting and had attended all committee meetings i never let pleasure interfere with coun cil work she said benefit from experience councillor harvey spang re turned in ward i by acclama tion stated that he had learned much during his initial year in office he said he hoped he had benefited from the experience touching on the completed road work in his ward councillor spang said that considerable funds had been expended on cone 4 on the whitevale hill continued on page 13 intire council returned to office en uxbridge twp reeve earl dowswell deputy- reeve robt nesbitt and council lors alvin redshaw norman hogg and charles forsyth were all returned to office by acclama tion in uxbridge township on monday afternoon less than two dozen ratepayers turned up at the annual nomination meet ing very few more than last year reeve earl dowswell in speak ing to the handful of residents said that council had put up a strong fight to preserve the goodwood cnr station which was ultimately closed by a de cision of the board of trans port he said that the township had had one of their largest road budgets this year due to the purchase of a new truck and erection of a garage three supplementary requests to the dept of highways for funds had been necessary which the reeve thought created a record in financing the garage he said was just completed he noted that the township now had its own airfield which would doubtless be enlarged in referring to ontario coun ty matters reeve dowswell stat ed that the road from goodwood to manchester was about ready for contract and it was expected that the portion as far east as the 7th concession would be built in 1960 with the connection to highway 47 the total cost is expected to be three quarters of a million dollars robert nesbitt who was re turned as deputyreeve stated that as a member of the county agricultural committee he was pleased to see a large decrease in the fox population he said about a dozen wolves had also been shot some in the vicinity of goodwood he referred to the canning companies and said that it was regrettable that these companies had reduced the price to the farmers for vegetables in order to compete with american im ports the new pump which was in stalled last year to keep the goodwood area free of floods had only been operated for a short period but had pumped over a million gallons of water from this low lying land charles forsyth referred to the decrease in sheep losses and credited this to the fact that neighboring municipalities had tightened up on their dog regu lations norman hogg noted the in crease in council financing he said that in 1958 the bank loan had only been 6000 while in the current year it had been necessary to borrow a total of 40000 relief he said had tak en a sharp upturn from 1700 in 1958 to 4200 in 1959 alvin redshaw thanked the ratepayers for his return to of fice and said he could add little to the reports already given by other council members claremont district news we persons are content with is a lot more editors mail claremont ont tribune editor stouffville ont dear sir i would appreciate receiving some space in your paper to air a complaint that i have held for the past number of years it would appear that every christ mas the pickering township council become very liberal with their funds and present each and every employee with a turkey the trouble with such a policy as i see it is that council is playing santa claus with the taxpayers money yours and mine i could name dozens of de serving families right around claremont who will not be for tunate enough to have a christ mas turkey on their table it is these same people who will be helping to pay for the christmas dinners of pickering twp em ployees who are well able to pay for their own it may be the custom of pri vate firms to oresent their sui members with- prechristmas bonuses but unfortunately the operations of a municipal gov ernment cannot be classed in the same line of business i do not know what the practice is in other municipalities nor do i really care i do know however that the cost of this practice is over 400 i feel that council is being overly generous with our mon ey no doubt the welfare offi cer could find many an empty oven in homes throughout the township where such a gift would be gratefully received i doubt if any of the municipal employees are so hardpressed for funds that they cannot pro vide their own christmas din ners a taxpayer the drug manufacturers arc doing their full share to help dispose of uncle sams cottoa surplus theyre filling the bot ties half with pills and half with cotton claremont boy wins tv set to sell pony by auction on friday sixteen year old john tor- rence son of mr and mrs robt torrence claremont was the winner of a portable
