on monday night council rejected a request by the assessment commissioner mr delbert goslin that he be granted the assistance of a so licitor in handling assessment cases before the ontario muni cipal board we shouldnt hire a high or a low priced lawyer to handle one individual case continued councillor ashton everyone should be treated the same the miller paving co has filed an appeal on its 195s assessment it will be heard before the on tario municipal board on dec 9th at 930 am the ontario municipal board is almost a judicial body said reeve sherman scott our as sessor feels he requires legal advice if hes fighting the case on points of assessment then our own assessor should be well versed in such work countered councillor ashton clerk l t johnston informed council that on certain occa sions mr goslin had used a solicitor in the past the township shouldnt go around wearing ribbons because it has been able to beat some one stated councillor ashton reeve scott suggested that it would be regrettable if the twp was beaten on a legal technical ity the reeve said that he was informed by mr goslin that other parties would be repre sented by solicitors the assessor doesnt abide by the ruling of the judge any way noted councillor ashton their taxes are increased the very next year mr ashton con tended tiuii the omb would look more favourably on the township if the assessor appear ed by himself ive attended these appeal cases and im sure any layman could handle them said coun cillor miss violet swan i dont see the necessity for all these ontario municipal board hearings noted council lor ashton last year we went to the supreme court and it was thrown out he continued we had all the lawyers in the country working for us councillor harvey spang con tended that the assessor should be granted legal advice dont you think that we would have a better chance of winning if we were represented questioned councillor spang it looks pret ty weak on our part if we send our assessor down there by himself a motion that mr goslin be denied a solicitors assistance at a forthcoming assessment ap peal case before the ontario mu nicipal board on dec 9th was passed by council scott is ten voters short for depreeve residents in the township of scott will have to do without a deputyreeve for at least one more year it was learned this week following a check of the roll by the clerk and assessor and the county assessor at the reg istry office it was found to be 10 votes short of the number required in order to qualify for a deputyreeve this is the second time in less than a decade that scott town ship has been so close to having a deputyreeve the other time was in 1953 when a deputy mor- ley bain was elected and sat through one session of county council before it was discovered there were not sufficient quali fied voters to warrant his elec tion as a resurc he resigned the position which in turn made it necessary to call nominations for an additional councillor it seems almost certain the township of scott will have its extra vote in county council by next election time contest for depreeve only interest as pickering norn nears the pickering township elec tion is shaping up to a twoway campaign for the position of deputyreeve the present in cumbent mrs jean mcpherson will seek reelection against mr ross hawthorne councillor in ward 4 both parties declared their intentions of running a number of weeks ago the an nual nomination is slated for friday evening between the hours of 6 pm and 7 pm councillor hawthorne resides at frenchmans bay mrs mcpher son lives on the valley farm road the election will be held on saturday dec 5th the current nomination may be one of the quietest in recent years with the exception of deputyreeve there appears to be little interest in any of the ney brought 35 cents per lb art this was the highest price 1j t l obtained by any ontario county entries claremont santa claus parade saturday nov 28 1959 phizes for
