our editorial comment one of the pains last week a one year old mark- ham twp girl died en route to the scarboro general hospital in spite of emergency treatment by a doctor and police thechild was pronounced dead on admittance dr jas scott told the tribune that the babys life might possibly have been saved if a hospital had been located in the im mediate markham area he pointed out that a twentyminute trip to scarboro is often twenty minutes too long he noted further that accom modation is very limited in all tor onto and district hospitals he sug gested that 20000 people could be served by a hospital in this area the very thought of such a pro ject casts a spell of uncertainty over municipalities and private citizens of growing up hospitals are built only after weeks months and sometimes years of fund- raising campaigns further financial donations are needed to keep them operating on a financially sound basis with such thoughts in mind resi dents are loathe to promote such a project hospitals are of little concern for the healthy fundraising drives are above the financial means of the sick who then is there left to shoul der the load ferhaps the value of emergency hospital treatment could best be described by the parents of the little girl that died in the mark- ham police cruiser others have met a similar fate in the past and it will happen again these are problems that an expanding area must face these are the pains of growing up a town band gone everybody loves a band theres not a human pulse that does not quicken to the beat of a big bass drum or respond to the lively step of a goldbraided majorette they are appreciated at sports events openair church services or at a pre- christmas program on a busy main street corner take a band out of any parade and the procession is im mediately transformed into a march of wooden soldiers it adds life color and enthusiasm to any promotion without it all is dead a few years ago almost every town and village pointed with pride to its brass band a large majority of its members comprised high school students one could always find a handful of veteran artists who were willing to lend their talents to the group some communities became known across the province and even across the dominion for their instru mental accomplishments the town of georgetown is an excellent exam ple during the past decade there has been a sharp decline in band or ganizations the once flourishing symbols blaring horns and rolling drums have weakened and died once gone it is most difficult to bring it back we now find is necessary to retrieve such talent from toronto should this be we dont think so for many years now the mark- but not forgotten ham high school has kept its allgirl bugle band intact at most every function promoted by our southern neighbors these girls are ready and willing to lend their instruments support they like the georgetown pipers have carried the markham nameplate to distant centres each year senior members pass out of the ranks but replacements are always available from the annual influx of freshmen recruits their dress their style and even their repertoire may have changed only slightly in the past decade but their every appearance is always well received by a bandloving public stouffville too has a band a high school group under the leader ship of mr jerry waits has to date confined its activities strictly to extracurricular presentations within the school their numbers at the re cent commencement brought a host of complimentary remarks from those in attendance add a halfdozen members or more to the present roster dress them up in eyecatching uniforms and select a batontwirling majorette for a leader and stouff- villes bandfamine will be ended we feel its just that simple the local school band or orchestra should not hide its talent under a bushel the members could do credit to them selves to their school and to the town the need is present the ser vice long overdue more encouragement for the drones stouffville employees are among the millions across canada who re cently had a new dent made in their income as unemployment premiums were increased in fact nearly doubled in the higher brackets this raise in premiums following more than a dozen years of high employment seems out of line why because is encourages too many to work only enough to qualify for the dole certain trades have priced their services at ridiculous figures and worry little for the off season when they collect the insurance handout made up to a considerable degree by contributions from persons who have never and are not likely to ever collect a dime from the fund in our printing trade very few of the workers collect as our men are employed on the year round basis and 5f sickness strikes they are covered by our own health plan we as a small business are highly criticized if we raise our rates some folks in our business have not raised their rates in years but paper an unauthorized a factory in the town of aurora is using a lot in the township of whitchurch for an unauthorized open disposal plant according to mem bers of council raw sewage is being transported in tank trucks from a tannery in aurora to a piece of pro perty on concession 2 whitchurch the waste is dissolved in a strong solution of sulphuric acid and dump ed either on top of the ground or into an open excavation the tribune viewed the sit last week to describe the situation in few words we would say that it consti tutes a menace to the life and limb of every child in the area one acci dent around the edge of this acid pot would mean instant death even ink labor have gone up each year the small business with stiffer credit regulations higher taxes and the new rates for unemployment of w it pays half either goes under or joins the merry round of inflation residents in stouffville like many other small towns find it very difficult to get people to do odd jobs we go along with the fact that older people and younger unemployables should be looked after but we cannot condone the encouragement that is being given to the work slacker its time that the man who works every day and every week has some pro tection its time that the loafers were weeded out and when winter comes let them take a shovel and make their own way there are too many who never benefit contributing weekly to those who will gladly sit by the fire and take the small govern ment handout rather than stir them selves to do a little honest toil we may have to go back a few years to get a real sense of values and fundamental honesty disposal plant the trees in the immediate area are dead a high board fence is little deterrent to children a keep out placard means nothing when it hangs on an open gate it is rather difficult to under stand why property in one municipal ity should be mutilated in order to provide a service to a firm in an adjoining town the matter has been the topic of discussion for many months among members of whit church council but repeated warnings have apparently fallen on deaf ears aurora should be well able to look after its own sewage to dump refuse on the property of a next door township is stretching the good neighbor policy to the limit for parents only goodbye moimt what happens when you leave your child with a baby sitter and go out for a short lime is your small son or daughter in tears over your departure per- haps he rebels soviolently that it takes the edge off those few golden hours when you are free from home responsibilities you cannot give in to his cry ing and stay home but you can try to discover the reason why he makes such a fuss time has- little meaning for a child when he watches your departing back through the window it may be he fears you will never return no wonder he wails when he i feels so desolate never try to deceive your child by slipping away when he is having his afternoon nap i dont vanish when he is pre occupied with play these meth ods destroy his confidence in you prepare your child by telling him what you are going to be doing when you are away from him state exactly when you will be back by supper time or before daddy comes from the office if he is four or five show him where the big and lit tle hands of the clock will be when he can start watching for i your return when you come back take time to describe to him some thing you have seen or done if possible bring some little sur prise home with you as a pret ty serviette from an afternoon tea party it is much easier for your child to take your going in his stride if he enjoys the company of the grownup who is caring for him have you discovered that there is no better substi tute for mother than father a man may feel awkward or in adequate in his first babysitting sessions but there is nothing which will make him prouder of his youngster son or daughter discovers that it is fun to have daddy in charge together they can wave farewell quite happily as baby sitters grandmothers and aunts often rate high too most mothers have a list of two or three reliable older girls or women who are fond of children and know their childs schedule each friendly person who cares for your little boy or girl in creases his confidence in other people outside the home circle but too many different sitters are confusing to a little child one of the most inexpensive daytime child caring schemes is a barter plan between two mo thers of small children you care for mrs smiths susan in your home one afternoon and she looks after your billy on another afternoon if this is a regular arrangement the two children will likely look forward to their time together a busy child is a happy child and you should plan- possible activities for your child in your absence have a few toys a fa vorite story book or dolly put away vyhich are only enjoyed at these special times if father takes a turn at minding his youngster perhaps he could make a set of homemade blocks or a simple jigsaw puzzle of a little pill toy for junior if your child attends nursery school during the week or a nursery class session during sunday school lesson lesson for desired m nov 16 1959 dear editor it was not my wish to be drawn into the edwards town council controversy but in the light of the snide remarks re ferring to me which were con tained in a letter appearing in your nov 12 issue i feel justi fied in asking for my day in court the issues in the edwards council dispute and the dismiss al of one of my employees stem from the same root fanned in both capes to a lot of smoke and smell by members of stouff- villes cafe society employee employer relations are simply this if an employee by his or her actions tends to jeopardize customer employer relations it is time to make other arrangements by the same token if the council a freely elected body of public minded citizens who give literal ly and figuratively freely of their time and energy to min ister to the needs of our grow ing community decide by a dem ocratic majority vote that for the sake of harmony the best in terests of the community would be served by making different arrangements i see no need for all this bell ringing and door knocking unless there is in fact some truth in the state ments i am alleged to have made to the effect that mr ed wards supporters are glory see kers who bask in the limelight of cheap publicity if i am wrong lets see all these do- gooders take the same interest in public affairs by letting their names stand at the next munici pal nomination meeting now mr editor i would close by repeating this letter was not of my seeking but as my crit ics champion will attest i cant be intimidated and i dont get pushed around so pretty good cy bellman sugar and spice do you know that in the us the teenage population has a buying power of 580 billion a year a chap from the states told me that the other day and i was suitably startled or may be it was 8 million a day it doesnt matter i presume the same is true in canada proportionately lets say there are four million teen agers in canada a conservative estimate of their direct spending would be an average of 52 a week each thats 58 million a week 5416 million a year add to that their indirect spending that is the money spent by their parents on clothes and cars for them foods and fads for them schooling and spoiling for them and they are probably the most expensive and economically influential seg ment of society ever spewned rather a shocker innt it it was not always thus only in the pait generation has the age group between 12 and jo fasten ed on the body of society with a vampires tooth and inhaled with guito never before in his tory have commerce and culture danced attendance on the maud- lln mind of the teens im not complaining or say ing its all wrong im merely observing nor do i blame it on the kids start feeding a new pup choice morsels from your table even though you know its wrong pretty soon hes claw ing at your leg if youre not handing it down fast enough next thing you know hes a grown dog is sitting at the table i r bill smiiey with a bib below his jowls and gets snarly if you give him the half of your steak that has the gristle in it this adulation of the adoles- cen was nonexistent when 1 was one and dont give me tliat pap about todays teenagers be ing all mixed up and confused people of that age have always been confused and mixed up the difference was that we did nt know how to take advantage of it and we didnt have enough money for anybody to be both ered with us perhaps it is money that has supplied the motive power for the cult of the teen which has smothered society in the past decade with something that has all the grace charm and vitality of a wellmouthed marshmallow it began in the 1940s when the wartime and postwar boom produced easy money the like of which honest plugging people had never seen parents delight ed and u at ease with their new found affluence passed some of it on to their kids for nothing not for working but just so they could hold up their end with all the other kids whose parents had given them money for the same reason it was not long before the sharpies of society smelded a fat new market sociologists gave them a hand up by turn ing the full candlcpowcr of their searchlight on the youth of to- day the youth responded as youth always will by pushing for a place at the trough and thus in the 1050s emerg ed fullblown that phenomenon the teenager master of all he or she surveys as capricious as catherine the great as mls- directed as a monsoon one can i only look forward u the 1960s with utter forclradlng i glorification of the teenager i has had several results all of them dire it has unleashed a veritable flood of garbage in the 1 fields of entertainment and pub- j llshlng it has convinced even j the more sensible oi our youth i that they are as important as the sycophants say they are it has made them believe that they are enjoying the most ex citing the richest years of their lives which is pure crap it has played hell with family life be cause it has assured them that everyone who is not a teenager is either infantile or an imbe cile dont ask me for the answers i just have the questions the only thing i can suggest is to cut off ruthlessly their finances which would bring down about our ears a torrent from the soft i drink companies the record companies the drivein movies the people who specialize in clothes and shoes for teens and i everybody else who has a finger in that big juicy pic dont think i am attacking the teenagers or that i have a formula for revamping society its just that i have a problem i have a son who u 12 when i was 12 i wanted to be a cowboy tarxanoftheapes a great ex plorer or on dull days maybe just a millionaire you know what my kid wants to be he wants to be a teenager k tery depressing in
