quantz there were no cigarettes in those days we had cigars and plug tobacco the smoking plug and the chewing plug the chewing was a darker color heavier and not so dry- the old clay pipe was much in use the smoker would take out his plug his pipe and his jackknife whittle enough from the plug to fill the pipe bowl and light up with a match no lighters had been invented as yet for chew ing just bite off a bit of the plug sometimes cut off instead of bite off heres one on me one of the boys had swiped some of his dads chewing he offered me a bit in school it was near clos- in georgian bay in lake erie in the atlantic ocean on the at white rcmfwypshrdlcmlwy shore at massachusetts and at white rock on the pacific coast i found nothing better than old musselmans lake in the winter we had occasion al coasting parties we small fry did most of our coasting on saturdays we had not far to go from the church hill cor ner both of the churches had suppers during the christmas season the christian church also had an outdoor party some time in midsummer this was held in someones grove the stouffvilie brass band was one of the highlights at this gather ing there was usually a spe cial speaker and sometimes a football game and a few other ing time so of course i must attractions the cost of the din- have a try at it i chewed and swallowed everything on the way home i became as sick as a horse i thought i was going to die i threw up everything but my boots when i told the home folks what was the matter they just laughed and made fun of me it was no laughing mat ter with me that was the first and the last tobacco that i ever used pays to treas seed potatoes it wasnt many years ago that potato growers heard a lot about treating seed tubers for mm iu a eoesks joyed the games as well as the i think i mentioned several parties in a previous article i missed one the old donation party i remember one from church hill to our ministers at stouffvilie the people got together and figured what each was to take a cord of wood a few sacks of oats for the par sons horse no cars in those days a quarter of beef a cured ham a few dozen eggs a few pounds of butter etc also some cash donations i remember the doners speech he said silver and gold have i none but here are a few greenbacks that may serve as well we youngsters who were able to go always en- ckvr tv ch 3 barrie monday june 8 6 05 pm ih zoctonia to blackleg and seed- piece decay unfortunately potato disease control just didnt come that easy and many growers who depended on a sureshot chem ical were disappointed some i even quit treating seed alto gether we learned a lot since then comments ontario agricultural college botanist prof c b kelly the main thing being that seed treatment is effective only against surface organisms mercuric chloride and semasan bel are useful for treating sur faceborne bacteria rhizocto- nia verticillium and seedpiece decay spergon and phygon can be used for prevention of seed decay and they will also stop rhlzoctonia fungi from attacking the sprouts but if the disease is inside the tuber or is a virus there is i i no effective control notes kel ly seed treatment wont stop supper the ladies always had an extra supply of good eats any surplus was left at the parsons in summer the boys for miles around used to meet at the lake for a bath a swim and for extra mischief there were some good swimmers and we little chaps learned to swim we would wade out as far as we could and turn and try to swim in some of the older ones would often show us how and we soon learned later i swam the officers and members of the york north progressive conservative association cordially invite you to attend a reception in honour of honourable leslie m frost qc lld prime minister of the province of ontario and major a a mackenzie mc your progressive conservative candidate at the lions hall centre st richmond hill tuesday june 9 1959 from 200 to 430 pm late blight fungtis in tubers it doesnt control verticillium wilt if the fungus has entered the tuber by way of the rhizome and it doesnt control blackleg and ring rot inside the tuber the oac plant disease spe cialist stated that one major benefit of treating seed pota toes was that no new surface disease organism would be in troduced into clean soil growers shouldnt expect the treatment to carry the whole load he added other control measures that come to mind are sow foundation or certified seed store seed potatoes away from table potatoes in a dis infected area and buy small whole potatoes rather than cut up larger potatoes where you have to depend on knife disin fection or streptomycin sul phate dipping of the seed to prevent the spread of disease from tuber to tuber ner was all of 25c in those days we played for the sport we had good times and good exercise i think the winning team usually got a free meal i can remember the winning football team getting a new football strawberry festivals were quite common in season a luscious treat for 15c thats a long time ago and much water has passed under the bridge sinoe the young ladies wore won derful summer hats almost all of which had an ostrich feather as the main decoration along with so many other things the ostrich has gone into the back ground wonderful things have been discovered and wonderful inventions made since then but some of the oldfashioned things still stand out in our memories i think the old poets have never been equalled in these later days let me cite a few examples pictures of memory by alice cary the light of other days oft in the stilly night by thos moore also moores the journey on wards youth and age by lord byron the old familiar faces by charles lamb i have had playmates i have had companions in my days of child hood in my joyful school days all all are gone the old famil iar faces past and present by thomas hood i remember i remember the fir trees dark and high i used to think their slender tops were close against the sky it was a childish fancy but now tis little joy to know im far ther off from heaven than when i was a boy i hope some of the new timers and some of the middle- timers and especially the old- timers will appreciate my rov ing notes about the old times my good wishes go out to all the readers of these notes sincerely a real old timer ea quantz innisfail alberta gormley
