of canada was held in the schomberg united church with a good attendance of ministers and laymen of the area the op ening worship was conducted by rev j s boleminister of schomberg united church who spoke on the theme of the church yesterday today and forever presbytery was constituted with rev douglas davis stouff- ville as chairman and rev g h thomas scarboro secretary during the morning sessions the election of officers for 1959- 60 was held with the following results chairman rev john f g morris aurora secretary rev martin r jenkinson king city treasurer mr elgin evans new market settlement committee mr trevor watson markham rev a f binnlngton victoria square considerable attention was devoted to the presentation of the christian education commit tee of which rev donald e c mclean keswick is chairman rev jane bone five oaks christian training centre par is addressed the gathering on the work and place of this train- ing centre she outlined the va riety of activities in which five oaks participated during the year and invited ministers sun day school staffs professional people and interested persons to visit five oaks to share the program being offered she related the experience of a weekend retreat held recently by a group of dentists the theme of christianity and the professional life was emphasiz ed at this retreat miss bone pointed out the importance and impetus of a dedicated perma nent staff thinking praying studying and planning here at five oaks she explained one becomes aware of the overwhel ming presence of god she told of the work camps which are quite popular and recom mended this type of holiday and recreation to older teenagers and young people during the noon recess a num ber of interesting and colorful pictures were shown miss bone rev clayton searle depart ment of missionary arid main tenance toronto addressed presbytery urging complete sup port of this fund used to pro vide a wide and vital ministry throughout the church he stressed the sector pro jects as effective in helping con gregations fulfill their ministry he predicted that in 1959 there would be almost 100 sectors across canada with over 500 united churches involved this represents he pointed out about twice as many as in 1958 mr searle stressed the importance of an active mis sionary and maintenance com mittee in each pastoral charge quoting from a church miss l hamer aurora pre senting the overseas missions report revealed that the chris tian church faces a real chal lenge in many parts of the world with respect to its rela tionship to other great religions such as hinduism announcement was made of the toronto conference in di vision st united church ow en sound june 1 to june 5 special sessions will be fea tured for the ordination of min isters the presentation of the work of the church at home and abroad and the introduction of men and women going forth to serve the church in different parts of the world two vacancies were noted in the presbytery unlonville and vroomanton a new minister will be inducted into the unlon ville charge early in july but vroomanton has not as yet call ed a minister rev w s butt is retiring from the unionville charge while rev w e brignall vroo manton leaves to become min ister of the oakwood pastoral charge in lindsay presbytery rev douglas davis extended to rev j s bole and his offi cial board the appreciation of presbytery for the accommoda tion of their church and to the womans association of schom berg united church for the ex cellent dinner which they serv ed presbytery adjourned for a brief session during the meet ings of the toronto conference improved dairy herds pay off good management meant al most 52000 more for some york north county farmers pock ets from a net loss of s27 have tested enough herds to ac count for about onequarter of the cattle population in the county the incidence of infec tion according to latest reports is 18 of the cattle tested in fection has been found in 16 of the herds in order to speed up the test ing programme dr k f wells veterinary director gen eral recently announced that special technicians will now be allowed to collect blood sam ples this will be the first time that technicians have ever been used for this type of work by the health of animals division a practising veterinarian em ployed by the health of animals division may hire and train one technician who must be approved by the federal depart ment and at all times will be under supervision the rate at which the pro gramme is carried out largely depends on the cooperation of the owners of the cattle in help ing to secure and hold them for the vet or technician reports indicate that so far coopera tion has been very good and it is hoped that farmers will con tinue to try to be on hand to help when the tester calls the speed with which the testing can be done is import ant to all farmers not only from a health standpoint but due to the united states impor tation
