monday march 2nd at 8 pm you are welcome following only a brief illness joseph mertens duchess st stouffville passed away in the stouffville nursing home early sunday morning mr mertens had suffered a stroke thursday and was removed to the nursing home only saturday had he survived until june of this year mr mertens would have mark ed his 91st birthday he was a most remarkable man for his years of stalwart build and one who had never known a sick day in his long lifetime the late joseph mertens was born near stouffvilles western limits a son of the late john mertens and mary baxter his passing marks the closing chap ter in the life of a family of four boys and three girls his wife the former emma hoover passed away twenty- four years ago the couple had farmed for many years on the home place just outside of town mr mertens attended the ring- wood school as a boy and was the last surviving member of his school class the mertens farm home was a hundred and twentyfive years old and was the site of the be ginning of the christian con gregational church in 1846 despite his great years the deceased was most active until well past eighty years and was known to have mounted a lad der and painted the local resi dence at this age he was keenly interested in local affairs and was a familiar figure on main st mr mertens during his late years could always recall vivid ly the great changes that had taken place both on the farm and in the life of stouffville mr mertens has made his home with his daughter mar gery on duchess st another daughter mrs fletcher goudie lives at altona the funeral on tuesday after noon was conducted from the oneill funeral chapel by rev douglas davis and rev d sar- geant pallbearers were don da vis mervin bunker ken coul- son cliff pipher win timbers in toronto mr lewis passed away in the midst of preparing this large order but mrs lewis with the aid of her son and daughters completed the pro gram and carried through one of her late husbands had required the best part of two months uons club oratorical contest students from stouffville dis trict high school competed on monday evening in the annual lions club oratorical contest four juniors and four seniors competed in the annual event which was held on the occasion of a regular lions club meet ing the winner in the junior division was helen mclean with marilyn houck second the other two speakers were donna whitehead and warren hend ricks in the senior section mary hanvood stood first and nor man hendricks second the other two senior speakers were gertrude baker and jocelyn button judges for the contest were mr alf hill principal of unionviue public school mr bert nevvall principal of mark- ham district high school and wlri sherwood agincourt high school staff chairman for the event was lion ted edwards and the awards were presented by lion president al smalley of the local club considering the bad driving conditions there was a good attendance out to hear the young people a num ber of parents and friends at tended as well as a car load of lions from the markham-un- ionville club lion douglas da vis expressed the appreciation of the club to the students and the judges and members of the local high school staff he said that the annual contest which has been operated now for some nine years was a most worthwhile effort and an op portunity for students to gain sta- ticis but was especially inter ested in the ums hospital at tungan magajiya where his brother dr ross bell with his wife and family has served as medical missionary for several years this hospital is of spe cial interest to stouffville friends as a great part of the hospital building program was super vised by rev earl honsberger who is well known in stouff ville at present mrs edma brubacher who has relatives here is doing office work and missionary work at the hos pital mr bell also visited india where his brotherinlaw rev alfred rees his wife and fam ily are doing missionary work in calcutta pictures of the churches the hospital the mis sionaries and natives were of great interest he also showed i pictures of palestine and he told with much interest of his visit to jerusalem bethlehem and other places of biblical his tory all who were present appre ciated the account of this jour ney and the beautiful slides the offering for the evening was for the wms project houck and donna whitehead were i chosen ito speak before the lions monday february 23 was the date set for the lions club public speaking contest held at the masonic hall spea kers in the contest were norm hendricks mary harwood joc elyn button gertrude baker warren hendricks betty mc lean marilyn houck and don na whitehead mary harwood was first for the seniors and norm hendricks was second junior winner was helen mc lean with marilyn houck sec ond on sunday february 15th the iscf held a missionary coffee at the home of eliza beth rae guest speaker was harry percy from the sudan interior mission there was an iscf bible quiz on thurs day february 19 erma stouf fer was captain of the winning team the dance held last friday was very successful the music was certainly enjoyable and everyone present seemed to have a good time a tale of two cities will be shown at the school on fri day evening february 27th the boys athletic association will sponsor the film night and tickets are 12 at the age of s5 was a resident of good wood for the past 40 years mov ins there from toronto in the spring of 1919 mrs thurlwell was born in leeds england and came to canada in the early years of the century she crossed the atlantic just a few days before the- illfated titanic and the ship on which she was a passen ger passed through a dangerous icefield on one huge iceberg which the ship narrowly avoid ed the passengers saw a great white polar bear floating to a watery grave as the ice melted in the warmer seas her father joseph william haywood was a fine musician who trained his daughter to follow in his footsteps she was a gifted pianist and played the violin also until she lost her hearing in middle life in good wood her hobby was growing flowers and neighbors for miles
